Former METALLICA Bassist JASON NEWSTED Holds Northern California Seminar (Video)

December 4, 2011

Former METALLICA/VOIVOD bassist and current PAPA WHEELIE frontman Jason Newsted took part in a special seminar on November 29, 2011 at Red House in his longtime hometown of Walnut Creek, California. According to Red House's owner, Raja Singh, "Jason [shared] thoughts about his technique and his approach to making music in this informal talk.

"This [was] a great time to meet Jason, and get all [the] questions answered about what it's like to play in one of the world's biggest bands."

Profits from the event benefited the Contra Costa County chapter of Guitars Not Guns, a charity that teaches guitar to foster kids.

In a recent interview with BAM magazine, Newsted stated about his Red House seminar, "[The] seminar [is] for players, kids, whoever wants to come, and try to talk to them about things they can't learn from tablature, on the computer, from their guitar teacher or from reading a magazine, interviews with their heroes that stuff. I'm going to try to teach them something that only I could tell them. I am going to share some things, like what I have learned, 'if I knew then what I know now' type of things those are the kinds of things I want to share with them. Maybe advance them a little bit, help [them] realize that this is actually how it is, so [they] don't have to make the same mistakes as me."

Regarding his involvement with the Guitars Not Guns organization, Newsted said, "Guitars Not Guns is new to [PAPA WHEELIE]. We were just introduced to that in the last couple of weeks; we agreed to get with them today. Anything that helps out kids and steers them toward music in this day and age, I'll get behind that.

"I've been involved with Little Kids Rock [music education program that provides free instruments and rock and roll lessons to public schools] for 10 years, at least, by now. It's a really serious program, great program."

Video footage from Newsted's seminar can be seen below.

PAPA WHEELIE, the "stoner punk metal" crew consisting of Newsted (a.k.a. Jaylor) on guitar/vocals, Steven Wiig (a.k.a. Swiiglor) on drums and Joe Ledesma (a.k.a. Joefus) on bass, recently played several Northern California shows, including a November 19 date at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco as the support act for KYUSS LIVES!
