Ex-AS I LAY DYING Guitarist NICK HIPA Wasn't Shocked By TIM LAMBESIS' Murder-For-Hire Arrest

June 20, 2014

Ex-AS I LAY DYING guitarist Nick Hipa says that he wasn't shocked when he first learned of Tim Lambesis' attempt to hire a hitman to kill Tim's estranged wife, Meggan, saying that the move "wasn't completely out of character" for the then-AS I LAY DYING singer.

In an interview with MetalSucks, Hipa spoke about the AS I LAY DYING members' relationship with Lambesis and their reaction to their vocalist's arrest. "Any dude in a band … they are very aware of their bandmates' highs and their lows, the strengths of their characters, and their flaws," Hipa said. "You kind of just accept each other for it. I think even to the extent that you're like, 'Man, y'know, this dude sucks, but he's got other things going for him.' But for us, we started to see the degradation of [Lambesis'] character to [the point where it was] like, 'There's nothing really redeeming here. This guy is losing touch. What do we do? This is somebody that we're involved with on multiple levels.' And so we just tried to keep things together as well as we could, and not let any of those things ruin the band and what we had built. But when [Lambesis was arrested], I think we were surprised, [but] we weren't shocked like everyone else. This came out of the blue for everyone else… we did not expect things to go as far as they did, but [what Lambesis did] wasn't completely out of character."

On May 16, Lambesis was given a six-year prison sentence without probation for his role in the murder-for-hire plot.

The 33-year-old musician was arrested in May 2013 after handing the "hitman" — really an undercover police officer — $1,000 in cash, along with his wife's address and gate security codes.

Hipa and the other instrumental members of AS I LAY DYING — Jordan Mancino (drums),Phil Sgrosso (guitar) and Josh Gilbert (bass) — have joined forces with Shane Blay (vocals) of OH, SLEEPER in a new band called WOVENWAR.

WOVENWAR will release its debut album this summer via Metal Blade Records. The CD was produced by Bill Stevenson (DESCENDENTS, BLACK FLAG) and mixed by Colin Richardson (SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD, TRIVIUM).
