VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen has broken his silence over his recently-announced split with wife Valerie Bertinelli in the current issue of People magazine (dated July 22, 2002), which features a small photo of Bertinelli on the cover."We're friends," the 47-year-old guitarist told the magazine. "We love each other. We're just separated. I can't tell you if it will lead to a divorce, because I don't know." According to the article, the couple separated in October, but wanted to keep the split secret until after Van Halen announced he was cancer-free, which occurred in May. No reason was given for the split, but Bertinelli's mother, Nancy, is quoted as saying that "this is something [Valerie] tried very hard not to have happen, but it finally came to a breaking point… Right now it's just a separation, but I believe it will result in a divorce. I think Valerie is going on with her life."
