DAVE GROHL: DIMEBAG 'Was The Coolest F**king Dude In The World'

November 1, 2010

Eric Blair of "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show" conducted an interview with FOO FIGHTERS frontman and ex-NIRVANA drummer Dave Grohl at this past Friday night's (October 29) Dimebash 2010 event, which was held in honor of the late, great "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott (PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) at the world-famous Key Club on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. You can now watch the chat below.

When asked how he got involved with Dimebash, Grohl replied, "I met Vinnie [Paul Abbott, ex-PANTERA drummer and Dimebag's brother and] and Dime a really long time ago at an Ozzfest. FOO FIGHTERS played an Ozzfest in England in 1998, I think it was. It was weird because I think KORN had canceled and so they called us. And we were like,' Really? FOO FIGHTERS at Ozzfest?' It was SLAYER and PANTERA and OZZY. So we went, 'Yeah. Fuck it. We'll do it.' And we went and we were really nervous because we didn't feel like we fit in, but everybody was so fucking cool, and Vinnie and Dime were awesome; they were super-fucking-cool. So then whenever PANTERA — I used to live on the East Coast — whenever they'd come around Philadelphia or New York, I'd go and see them play. And we just made friends. And then when Dime was killed, it freaked us all out. He was just one of those guys that fucking everybody loved. You could be in the FOO FIGHTERS or you could be in SLAYER or you could be Justin Bieber, or whatever, he'd be your best bud. So when he passed away, I wrote Vinnie a letter. Because when Kurt Cobain died, our worlds were all turned upside down and this good friend of mine sent me a letter and said, 'I know you can't really imagine playing music right now, but it'll come back, and that's what will help you get with life — music.' And then I became friends with Rita [Haney, Dimebag's longtime girlfriend] — we've had Rita over at all of our parties and I love Rita so much; she's killer. Before we went on to do that last song, I was just thinking about why all of us are here, and all of us are here because, to be honest, Dime was the coolest fucking dude in the world, and everybody here was friends with him. So when Rita calls and says, 'Hey, I'm doing a thing for Dime,' I'll be there in a heartbeat. So that's why I'm here."

All proceeds from the event — including ticket sales, raffles, merchandise and drink specials — will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. In addition to these charitable items, a DVD of the event was recorded for near-future release with proceeds from the disc's sales also going towards the fund.

The all-star lineup that shared the stage included hard rock and heavy metal titans: Lemmy of MOTÖRHEAD; Dave Grohl of FOO FIGHTERS; Joey Jordison of SLIPKNOT and ROB ZOMBIE; Simon Wright from DIO; Brent Smith, Zach Myers and Eric Bass of SHINEDOWN; Kerry King and Dave Lombardo of SLAYER; Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel of MACHINE HEAD; Chuck Billy from TESTAMENT; Chris Howorth and Maria Brink of IN THIS MOMENT; Joey Vera of ARMORED SAINT; Tony Campos of STATIC-X; Gerry Nestler of PHILM; John Boecklin of DEVILDRIVER. This sold-out night was hosted by radio/television personality Jose Mangin, a veteran of several Dimebag events.
