BEHEMOTH Frontman 'In Great Spirits' Following First Round Of Chemo

August 26, 2010

Adam "Nergal" Darski, the 33-year-old guitarist/vocalist from BEHEMOTH, has finished the first round of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a life-threatening form of leukemia and is "in great spirits," according to LAMB OF GOD frontman Randy Blythe who spoke with the Polish musician last night (Wednesday, August 25). Blythe added in a Twitter posting that Nergal is "just recovering."

As previously reported, Darski is currently receiving treatment at the hematology division of the Gdansk Medical University Hospital and is in urgent need of a bone-marrow transplant. (A bone-marrow transplant is when special cells [called stem cells] that are normally found in the bone marrow are taken out, filtered, and given back either to the same person or to another person.)

Every year, more than 10,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma, and a bone-marrow transplant from an unrelated person is their best or only hope for survival. There is no data available on how many people die waiting for a match, but only four out of 10 patients receive the needed transplant.

Darski's fiancée, 26-year-old Polish pop singer Doda (real name: Dorota Rabczewska),has reportedly already donated her bone marrow but her tissue type is not believed to be a close enough match.

As a result of Darski's illness, all of the band's previously announced shows — including those in Russia and the Baltic states in September/October and the U.S. tour with WATAIN in November — have been cancelled.

Austria's Stormbringer.at webzine conducted an interview with Darski when BEHEMOTH played this year's Masters Of Rock festival, which was held July 15-18, 2010 in Vizovice, Czech Republic. Watch the chat below.

BEHEMOTH recently shot a video for the song "Alas The Lord Is Upon Me", taken from the band's latest album, "Evangelion". The clip was produced and directed by Dariusz Szermanowicz and Grupa 13, which previously helmed BEHEMOTH's videos for "Ov Fire And The Void" and "At The Left Hand Ov God".

BEHEMOTH was honored in the "Album Of The Year (Heavy Metal)" category at this year's Fryderyk Awards, Poland's most prestigious music award ceremony. Awards were presented in over 20 pop, classical and jazz categories at the event, which was held on April 19 in Warsaw, Poland.
