ANTHRAX Singer: It's Not A Good Time To Have The Last Name BUSH
April 22, 2004ANTHRAX vocalist John Bush told The Sydney Morning Herald that changing the band's name after the 2001 spate of postal terrorism in the U.S. that claimed five lives was never an option.
"Well, for us, I can't really imagine the core of this band making music under any other name," he said. "I think it's pretty synonymous with who we are and what we do.
"It was a weird thing. A lot of people contacted us, people like The Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine, and our attitude was, if it's music-related stuff, let's express our opinions and talk about it.
"But if somebody's gonna just write an ugly slant and say, 'Look at this band, they're really callous to the whole thing and insensitive,' we're like, 'No.'
"I mean, this is a band that's been called ANTHRAX for 20 years. We obviously weren't taking advantage of this."
Bush, who replaced Joey Belladonna to become the band's third frontman alongside founder guitarist Scott Ian and Co in 1992, notes that "obviously anyone dying over something as ridiculous as it was is a tragedy".
Asked if, under his country's circumstances, Mr. Bush might have been tempted to change his own name, the singer said, "Well, we played a show last night here in LA. I went into a little rap and I said, 'I love my father and I love my ancestry, but it's not a great time to be walkin' around with the last name Bush!'
"Y'know, it was a good thing. I played it up pretty big and got everyone pretty psyched up."
