ANTHRAX: Opening Bands Confirmed

June 25, 2003

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian has confirmed via the group's official web site that LAMB OF GOD and E-TOWN CONCRETE will be the opening bands for the first leg of ANTHRAX's upcoming U.S. headlining tour, which is scheduled to run between July 29 and August 30. Italy's LACUNA COIL will replace LAMB OF GOD on the second leg of trek, which is expected to kick off in the fall. "The dates are extensive," said Ian. "We're hitting everywhere. We're trying our best to keep the ticket prices down, too. We'll be doing a longer set than we did with MOTÖRHEAD. We've been working on 'Cadillac Rock Box', 'Catharsis', 'Be All End All', and a couple of other old ones that I'll leave as a surprise.

"I'm looking forward to our second trip around the states," Ian continued. "If it's anything like this run in Europe, it will be great. Now that the record has been out and you've had a chance to live with the songs, it will be that much better. I can see it here. The reactions to 'Safe Home' and 'Superhero' are so much bigger than back in March when the record first came out. 'Superhero' has the crowd jumping as one. 'Safe Home' is a huge sing-along.

"I think I've figured out why metal is so big over [in Europe]. Well, at least one of the reasons. MTV and other TV channels like Viva play the worst crap I've ever seen. They play so much bad pop, un-listenable Euro-dance techno shit, and lame girl-band (and when I say girl-band I mean boy-band) music. It's non-stop. At least in the U.S. we've got 'Headbanger's Ball', 'Extreme Rock', 'Uranium' etc. Over here? Nope. I saw a lip-synch performance from this girl-band called BEFORE FOUR that made N 'SYNC sound heavy. One of the guys in the band was wearing a BLS (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, in case you didn't know) t-shirt. I was hoping that Zakk's metal powers would possess the t-shirt and make it squeeze the guy until his head popped off. So my theory is that most kids [in Europe] at the ages of 12-15 hate the wimpy music they see on TV and go out and get into metal. I wish that would happen in the states too. I know that it does, it should happen more. Maybe Avril [Lavigne]'s 'METALLICA: Icon' thing will make her fans buy metal records."
