Pacific Northwest band AGALLOCH will release its new album, "Marrow Of The Spirit", on November 23 via Profound Lore Records. A track from the CD, "The Watcher's Monolith", is available for streaming at Stereogum.com.
Regarding the lyrical theme of "The Watcher's Monolith", AGALLOCH mainman John Haughm told Stereogum.com, "It has a lot to do with a horrible illness I had in Europe a couple years ago and the healing process which involved the Externsteine in the North Rhine region of Germany. Long story short, I visited the Externsteine with my friends and we stayed there late into the night and built a fire with traveling flutists and percussionists who we had met that day. The energy in the stones of the Extersteine is said to have healing properties so I laid down in the sepulchre, in total darkness, while the sounds of flutes and drums resonated through the stones and into my body. I spent about 30 minutes in the sepulchre…it was one of the most amazing spiritual experiences I have ever had. The following day, my horrible illness was gone. The overall message in this song is that these ancient Pagan sites are very important and must be protected and preserved."
Just as AGALLOCH's last three releases — "Pale Folklore", "The Mantle" and "Ashes Against The Grain" — all differed from each other, "Marrow Of The Spirit" is unlike anything AGALLOCH has ever produced before. The first album to feature new AGALLOCH drummer Aesop Dekker (also in Profound Lore acts LUDICRA and WORM OUROBOROS) includes guest appearances by cellist Jackie Perez Gratz (GRAYCEON, GIANT SQUID, ASUNDER, AMBER ASYLUM), Jeffrey Neblock (VINDENSANG), and Nathan Carson (WITCH MOUNTAIN, TWO-TON BOA, SUNN 0)))).
Recorded and mixed on analog through the means of exquisite vintage gear within the months of July and August in Portland, Oregon at Audible Alchemy Studios with Steven Wray Lobdell (FAUST guitarist) and mastered and manifested in San Francisco, California at Trakworx Studios with Justin Weis (LUDICRA, SLOUGH FEG, HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE), the six time-stretching songs that encompass "Marrow Of The Spirit" come across as their own distinct identities amongst themselves. At over an hour in length, "Marrow Of The Spirit" is AGALLOCH’s darkest, bleakest, most dense, detailed and aggressive album to date and in turn is the most accomplished album of their career.
