GENE SIMMONS: 'There Is Nothing In Me That Wants To Go In There And Do New Music' - Nov. 12, 2007
Billboard magazine recently conducted an interview with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Billboard: You've got the third series of the "Kissology" DVD coming out next month. Is there much more we can expect coming?

Simmons: There'll be 10. No one — and that includes THE BEATLES and ELVIS — can touch our (KISS') merchandising and licensing. Nobody. Outside of the music world, it's only Disney and Lucas. But in the music world, they can't shine our shoes.

Billboard: Any touring plans?

Simmons: We'll tour a few dates next year. We don't have anything to prove to anybody or do press to convince anybody we're important. We're doing KISS festivals around the Indy car racing series. Simmons Abramson Marketing markets and brands Indy cars. I came up with the I Am Indy brand, by the way. They go on the night before. We'll do 15 dates or so. We'll also go to Australia and New Zealand and maybe to four to six shows — but nothing comprehensive until we feel like it.

Billboard: It has been nine years since we've seen a new KISS album. Any plans to get back into the studio?

Simmons: The record industry is in such a mess. I called for what it was when college kids first started download music for free — that they were crooks. I told every record label I spoke with that they just lit the fuse to their own bomb that was going to explode from under them and put them on the street.

There is nothing in me that wants to go in there and do new music. How are you going to deliver it? How are you going to get paid for it if people can just get it for free? I will be putting out a Gene Simmons box set called "Monster" — a collection of 150 unreleased songs. KISS will have another box set of unreleased music in the next year.

The record industry doesn't have a f*cking clue how to make money. It's only their fault for letting foxes get into the henhouse and then wondering why there's no eggs or chickens. Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning. Those kids are putting 100,000 to a million people out of work. How can you pick on them? They've got freckles. That's a crook. He may as well be wearing a bandit's mask.

Doesn't affect me. But imagine being a new band with dreams of getting on stage and putting out your own record. Forget it.

Billboard: But some artist like RADIOHEAD and Trent Reznor are trying to find a new business model.

Simmons: That doesn't count. You can't pick on one person as an exception. And that's not a business model that works. I open a store and say "Come on in and pay whatever you want." Are you on f*cking crack? Do you really believe that's a business model that works?

Billboard: So what if music just becomes free and artists make their living off of touring and merchandise?

Simmons: Well, therein lies the most stupid mistake anybody can make. The most important part is the music. Without that, why would you care? Even the idea that you're considering giving the music away for free makes it easier to give it away for free. The only reason why gold is expensive is because we all agree that it is. There's no real use for it, except we all agree and abide by the idea that gold costs a certain amount per ounce. As soon as you give people the choice to deviate from it, you have chaos and anarchy. And that's what going on.

Stealing is wrong, but I still think this is a little harsh:

"Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning".

If I were to steal a cd, that is 15 bucks. So sue for 15 fucking bucks or give me some criminal charges for theft, but taking a house, car, and sued off the face of the earth? C'mon.

If KISS recorded a new album I would go out and buy it. I dont download anything because A its illegal, and B sound quality stinks and C I like owning a record/cd/lp whatever. I have been collecting music for 20 years and I will always enjoy buying cds, and lps. I bought the Kissology 1 and 2 dvd sets at best buy and threw out my old vhs copies. I think the 70s style KISS probably shouldnt record any new music but an the Eric Singer/Bruce Kulick lineup could put out a badass new album that sounds like Revenge or Asylum

Is that WE ARE SICK OF CORPORATE SUIT ASSHOLES getting outrageous amounts of money. METALHEADS SUPPORT THE BANDS, but not these greedy middlemen suits. I love buying stuff online from unsigned bands who make their own cds and PROFIT from the money I give them for their cd (and I love and prefer cds, with artwork, lyrics, etc., not downloading shit). If the corporate bullshit suits wants to turn things around, then DROP THE FUCKING PRICES and put out better quality shit. Otherwise, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, legal or not, bands and fans are going to keep finding ways around you greedy suit fuckers who blew everyones trust. END OF STORY! END OF FUCKING STORY!!

The music business is suffering...hahahaha

There are more tours than ever. Music in games,movies,ringtones...tons of new revenue sources.
And actually,DLing has helped in the way that bootleggers have been run out of business. Which means more money for fans to actually spend.

There always have been tapes for copies. And do you think some kid with 20,000 MP3s would,or even could buy all that? So,how are they "loosing" money? And no one ever mentions music stores selling used CDs,which make the artists and companies no money. nevertheless all the promo copies that DJs and such sell to music stores that sell them.

This is just like the movie industry complaining about DLing, while having a record year. And most people know that BANDS have always made their money with merch,so that is nothing new. And with all the new types in income streams, there is no need to worry about DLing more than audio cassettes or people copying CDs.

God this guy is such an arrogant cock- he just has the answer to everything doesn't he?

Q- So Greed- tell us why 15th century French cabinet makers are superior to the contemporary Visigoths who were experimenting with toungue and groove joints and early forms of varnish?

A- Well, it's like this- the French are far superior because they knew how to make money. It doesn't matter that their work fell apart in a year, it matters that they got paid. By the way, I have never been drunk and I sleep with women.

What a rude, greedy, cheesy, arrogant cock- no wonder Paul Stanley can't stand to be in the same room as this clown.

^^ Agreed.

Since when is making good music dependent upon getting paid? Does he REALLY need financial income as a motivator - the guy could buy a fucking SMALL COUNTRY with his weath.

If the man had a decent song left in him he'd waltz into the studio tomorrow and bust it out. But alas, he's got more important things to tend to...

...how nobody thinks TWICE about downloading Porn Movies, but the industry is still standing? Be honest... how many of you have Porn on your hard-drive? Did you physically walk into the smut-store, slam your fist on the counter, demand that copy of "Anus Academy III: Dude, Where's My Pancreas?" and fork over cold, hard cash for it?

Just a little something to think about. I wrote a whole essay about downloading, Porn Movies and Music, which I'll shamelessly plug here...

It is hard to feel sorry for the record companies that have been ripping us off for years. When cds came out (In the 1980's) they said they would drop in price as technology caught up and made it less expensive to make a compact disc. That never happened. Now it is still 18 dollars for a cd? To make us feel even more abused, We now know the real cost is about 10 cents to burn the cd. If they want to know where to find sympathy, it is in the dictionary between Shit and Syphilis.

Although I did once get a copy of "Caution: Your Ass Is On Fire vol. 5" as a gift, I've never met anybody - since the advent of broadband - who purchased porn. But the weird thing is that a lot of people who are up in arms about downloading music are the same people with 30 Gigs of downloaded porn on their hard-drives.

Don't Porn Stars need to eat too? It's not like cherry-scented anal lube is getting any cheaper, but oddly enough, Rocco Siffredi still makes the fat stacks.

I will always buy Kiss albums, but new bands have to improve their product to snare me in the first place.

I buy Kiss albums because I'm a fan and have been for 30 years.

However most new bands have one or two good songs on an album and I don't go near them again having been conned the first time round.

I have boxes and boxes of CD's I don't play, all bought cos reviewers said they were great, but then they got them for nothing.

All this is the record companies own fault, and it's hilarious.

the point that downloading music is an excuse not to make any new music is a cop out.it happens, its sux,but hey it dosent stop everyone else, why should it stop you.unless your greedy.your not exactly hurting for cash or anything.i think if kiss still wants to be taken serious and still be relevent in todays scene, they need to record something new, even a couple new tracks on kissology would be awesome as a exclusive for bestbuy.he's got time for every other money making scam that comes his way,but he's forgotten about us,the long time kiss fans who are still hoping fpr a new cd.im tired of waiting.
