SCOTT WEILAND Doesn't Feel Like Playing 'Greatest Hits' Set With STONE TEMPLE PILOTS - Mar. 21, 2013
In a brand new interview with Cleveland, Ohio's Scene magazine, singer Scott Weiland maintains that he is still a member of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and can't legally be fired from the group, despite his bandmates' claim to the contrary. "I think it was a reaction to the fact that [my current solo] tour had sold out within a week," he says with regard to the rest of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' statement that Weiland was "terminated" from the band. "It was probably not the smartest thing for them to do since I founded the band and there are certain legal terms within the contract which don't make sense as to that decision, or that threat."

Weiland and his solo band THE WILDABOUTS recently kicked off the 20-city trek, dubbed the "Purple At The Core Tour", where they are performing songs from the first two STONE TEMPLE PILOTS albums, 1992's "Core" and 1994's "Purple".

The singer, who is currently working on a new solo album, tells Scene that the last few tours with STP haven't been particularly inspiring.

"My philosophy is that I don't feel like going on the road and playing a greatest-hits set that we've been playing for five years," he says. "We've been doing that and in the midst of doing that, we made an album that took us a year and a half. That's not the way STP makes records. We make records in two weeks. If we're going to do something, we need to get back in the studio with [producer] Brendan O'Brien who has a track record with us and get re-inspired artistically again. We need to do it that way and get out there on the road and get out there with some excitement and not just turn our legacy into what JOURNEY or FOREIGNER is. That's not what we're about. That's not why we got into this. That's not at all what I'm about."

He continues: "More than anything, we've been a great live band. The reason why critics didn't like us because they thought we were one thing that we weren't. They thought we sounded like a Seattle band. We proved those critics wrong over our career and changed from album to album. We didn't sound like THE BEATLES, but we took that blueprint and the idea of being a band. Sure, there are some bands that have one sound and do it really well. But we looked at the idea of THE BEATLES and thought to really do it right, we had to evolve. We had to go into a cocoon every once in a while and come out as a butterfly and not an ugly moth."

Journey and Foreigner? You aren't even in the same league as Candlebox and Oleander.

Oh come on man, I get that you're not a fan of Stone Temple Pilots and that's fine but there's no denying they're way bigger and better than Candlebox ever was. Candlebox wasn't even in the same league as the band Live, and Live sucked major ass.

Why bother arguing about it? Scott is delusional; that's it. Now everyone go check out the new Immolation track!

I realize STP's official spokesperson, Slash, has been busy with his solo tour, but maybe now he can issue a statement from the band about why exactly they "fired" Scott. They owe it to the fans to say something. Their silence is ridiculous. The only reason you try to fire someone is to replace him, and there's no replacing Scott. They must feel they can't be a success at anything with another name, because everything they tried before failed. So now they want to replace Scott with somebody who will do exactly as they say and not be a full member either. Cheaper that way. Be careful where Saint Slash leads you.

What, did they cut out the crack pipe he has in his hand in that picture?

Weiland's an idiot, and I'm tired of hearing about that waste of space every time I visit this site. Can't we reserve some stories about bands that actually do shit and don't rely on their two hits from the 90s?

Help us if Corey Taylor and Weiland ever collaborate. This site would implode.

He refused to do another tour with STP because they'd be playing the hits, so instead he got together a solo band to do that EXACT same thing. I can see why he got fired. What a douche.

The Blabbermouth masses come out and make articles about Weiland some of the most commented upon stories of any given day. Yet the majority spill bile at the guy.

In his recent interviews, he's basically giving insight into why he and the other STP guys are at odds. They wanted to go on tour for another 6 months basically playing the same set they have since they reconvened a while back. THAT is the definition of cash grab. Scott wants to make another record first. Therein is the conflict.

Some might say "That's rich! He's out there playing Core and Purple every night right now." True. But he's not just sticking to the hits. He's at least digging into the deep album cuts and giving those a go.

I have no doubt that if Stone Temple Pilots do resurface, it will be with the same 4 guys its always been. This will likely be after the Deleos try and fail again with another project and singer under another name. Mark 'em. They want the money. And with Scott, they get it. Without him, they don't.

STP - all of you - expedite this bullshit, go kiss and make up, and go make a better record than that last mediocre one.

After reading this article I just went to STP's website and there is just one splash screen stating that SW is fired. Did someone not get the memo?

He's right about the greatest hits set.

Soundgarden do it right. Different set every night. Of course the crowd goes stiff for half of it, but they're filling places, the fans are happy, and the band is probably happy.

Other than that, remember kids, legal drugs don't make you sober!!

And neither do these ridiculous scarves he and his "wildabouts" insist on wearing. WTF?

It should be called "Scott Weiland's Scarf & The Scarf Wearers".

but a lot of the rock albums he has worked over the last 6-7 years were victims of the loudness war and sound compressed as fuck.

I'm all for O'Brien coming back but only the condition that they return to the big 'full' sound of No.4 and Shangri-La La.

What?

He doesn't want to go around playing a Greatest Hits set with Stone Temple Pilots in front 5,000 to 10,000 fans each night as a headliner in theaters, casinos and amphitheaters.

But, he would rather go around playing a Greatest Hits set in dive bars and small clubs in front of 1,500 fans on a good night with a bunch of unknown hired musicians and get paid a hell of a lot less money??

Funny, seen Candlebox a month or 2 ago and they will wipe their fucking ass with stp on any given night. I have seen both bands at least 10 times each. You don't know shit. Just cause you haven't heard their catalog or because it didn't hit your pop single radio charts doesn't mean it's not better. Kevin Martin alone, will blow the 4 members of stp off the stage. Check out a show for $15 when it comes through. Kevin Martin actually sounds better NOW.

I get why they canned him. He's going on and on some political rant. All in his little head and the crowd is like stfu and lets get this going because they didn't pay to hear a rambling fool on stage.
It's more pathetic the fan who posted this swore Scott's been sober over 10 years! I got a magical golden toilet for sale. Call me.
