Legendary IRON MAIDEN Illustrator DEREK RIGGS Interviewed (Video) - Mar. 17, 2013
The Rockin' Rag's Rock'n Rolivia conducted an interview with legendary IRON MAIDEN illustrator Derek Riggs on March 16 at the grand opening of Rock Your Loxx hair salon in Oceanside, California. You can now watch the chat below.

Riggs is behind one of the most recognizable characters in all of heavy metal, IRON MAIDEN's mascot Eddie. He has created some of the most complex album covers of all time with precision and a painterly flair.

Riggs' art book "Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs", was presented as a 180-page, full-color, large-format, top-quality art book, sporting approximately 200 graphics, some previously unpublished, some unfinished, many pristine originals from the IRON MAIDEN vaults, thanks to the full cooperation of MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood and his charges. In addition, Riggs painted a stunning new Eddie to grace the cover.

In a 2012 interview with Classic Rock magazine, Riggs was asked where the inspiration for IRON MAIDEN's "The Number Of The Beast" artwork came from.

"The manager phoned me up and said they wanted a picture for a single cover that was about the devil and witchcraft and was called 'Purgatory'," he said. "There was a Doctor Strange comic which had some big villian with Doctor Strange dangling on some strings like a puppet; it was something I read as a child back in the 1960s, I think. The picture came to mind right away. I thought I could do a very effective heaven-and-hell thing using Eddie. Most of those hell backgrounds were taken from my knowledge of medieval European Christian art which was full of such scenes.

"They phoned me up on the Friday night and they wanted the picture by Monday morning, so I only had two days to get the whole thing finished. So I had to work for two days and nights without any sleep to get it done on time. Because of the tight deadline, I had to use a kind of shorthand for all the figures. I had to get them in but I didn't have time to paint them. So I drew layers of black silhouettes with a pen and separated them with layers of airbrushed mist to try to give the picture some depth. It was quite a fast way to do it so I managed to get quite a few in there. I even got an H.R. Giger Alien in there as well."

No matter how great some of his artwork is he always comes across as a dork and sometimes even a bit of a dick. His laugh has got to be one of the most anoying sounds on the planet btw.

But yeah credit where credit is due, some of his artwork is amazing and maiden (smallwood) could have handled things better with him.

great artist, his iconic eddie representatiions really captured the spirit of the music. The covers without him are painfully inadequate. Dave patchett who did all the cathedral covers as well as covers for electric wizard and orange goblin is my favorite. I have the ethereal mirror promo poster framed and i put it up with the mona lisa for quality of work.

I got into metal was the number of the beast and piece of mind album covers when I was in 8th grade. The art drew me in and the music sustained me. What a combo.

Can touch the feeling i had seeing the Killers album cover in the record store when I was younger. That image scared the shit out of me and haunted my dreams. I was never the same again.

Iron Maiden owes a lot to the guy, much more than they ever paid him. This guy is responsible for the fortune they made with merch. I doubt he's 1/100 as rich as Steve Harris could be, though.

I was introduced to the band by the artwork, not the music first. I guess it's been the case for thousands and thousands of Maiden fans. Their worst covers have been the ones some other did.

By the way...

I bought his book. The Maiden stuff is awesome but the digital crap he put out is terrible. Seriously, you couldn't imagine it's the same guy doing those.

It is sad but true. I have DEEEEEP respect for his artwork, but he really needs to stick with his traditional media. His digital stuff seems like he's kinda stuck in the 90s.

...(esp their first few records) but you have to wonder where they would be without the whole concept of "Eddie" and Derek's awesome artwork.

I defy anyone old enough here (like myself) to remember what it was like to go into a record and just stare at all their album covers, all the detail, etc and not get drawn into it.

Those were the days...

I bought the Somewhere in Time album (cassette!) based purely on the cover art, never having heard anything from the album before. I don't even recall how Maiden I knew at that point; it certainly wasn't very much if any.

I also remember being freaked out as a child when I'd see what I now know was the Piece of Mind vinyl in record stores. It actually gave me a weird taste in my mouth, it was so gruesome to my 8 year-old self.

They really need to work with him again.

Live after Death, Piece of Mind, Seventh Son... and Somewhere in Time are my favourites... really atmospheric artwork that also always seemed to match the mood of the album - Seventh Son's epic coldness, Somewhere in Times futuristic guitar intros... something that Iron Maiden never have achieved again, not remotely.
The quality of their recent (as in "past 20 years") artwork seems to randomly change between shitty, awful and embarrasing with the exception of "A Matter of Life and Death" - that's quite ok.

Fact on the side: At their concert in Toronto I was so drunk that I bought a weird tour shirt that displays Eddie on a horse, the horse looks as if it's having an epileptic seizure and is throwing up at the same time. I've worn it once (when I was repainting the living room).

@ epac You are so correct. I used to take the bus to the mall and get so excited when i arrived to look at the same album covers that i looked at the previous week. Took forever to save up and buy one. It was the first 3 albums and Maiden Japan.

Can you imagine how hard it was that I could only buy one! Then how long it took to decide which one?
And the art work was the only thing making the decision.
Killers won that day but NOTB came a short time later.

Miss those days.

E~

i remember skipping school to go to the sam the record man to see the manager unpacking new releases. I would buy both the lp and cassette of a new release. The guy who ran the store was super cool and old enough to know alot about the early days of hard rock but still appreciated the new metal that was coming out. He would often open lps and i would listen to them to see if i liked it, that was what was great about the record store experience. The guy was like family, my friend and i would tell him when we heard some kids were going to steal from him. It broke my heart when it shut down and i saw the guy working in a shitty hardware store.

It states above that some of the pics in his book came from the Maiden vaults but in the video Derrek says Maiden did NOT let him use any and did NOT open the vault.

Someone needs to do their homework.

ditto to the above, I absolutely bought 'Number of the Beast' due to the cover, if I remember correctly I might have heard 'Run to the Hills' but otherwise I just knew the name from the older kids at high school and I was totally blown away by the cover.

not sure why Maiden didn't/doesn't do right by this guy. whether or not he's a dick is irrelevant, he unquestionably played a huge role in their success, the artwork is iconic.

would love to see them bring him back into the fold!

70's & 80's have to be the heyday of great album covers/
zeppelin - all
black sabbath - just about all
iron maiden - everything with riggs
rush - everything up to power windows,
ac dc - everything up to fly on the wall
yes - all & all covers roger dean was involved with like asia
pink floyd - all and anything storm thorgeson ever worked on
def leppard - pyromania
dio - all
exciter - all
scorpions - love drive, animal magnetism, blackout, LAFS, virgin killer (its in bad taste, but i have to include because in the 70's you could put just about anything you wanted on an lp cover, the)
kansas - all the 70's albums
saga - from debut to heads or tails
ufo - force it
humble pie - thunderbox - awesome lp design, a keyhole on the cover which you look through and you see a woman , then you open and theres this naked woman(the singers wife at the time.) getting out of the tub.
thats what comes to mind

is Riggs' artwork. I wonder how much he got from my cash money going into the Maiden coffers... and how much went into Bruce Dickinson's Unmanned Drone research to supplement the military contract?

"lick at the gravy" indeed :/

I as many here have said, bought my first Iron Maiden album because of the artwork.

My problem was choosing between Piece of mind and NOTB. The dude who worked at the record store said the piece of mind album was the best, but I liked the NOTB album cover the most...so of curse I bought the NOTB album. That's how it was back in the day...

Iron Maiden would only be half the band they are today, if was not for Derek Riggs. They should pay him A LOT MORE.
