TODD LA TORRE-Fronted Version Of QUEENSRŸCHE: Ybor City Concert Footage Available - Mar. 16, 2013
Fan-filmed video footage of the Todd La Torre-fronted version of QUEENSRŸCHE performing on March 15 at The Ritz in Ybor City, Florida can be seen below.

QUEENSRŸCHE has inked a deal with Century Media Records for the release of the band's new studio album. Due on June 11, the CD marks the debut release from the lineup comprised of La Torre (vocals; ex-CRIMSON GLORY), Michael Wilton (guitar), Parker Lundgren (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums). The drums for the album were recorded at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, Washington with producer James "Jimbo" Barton — the man who engineered and mixed the band's classic 1988 LP, "Operation: Mindcrime", and its 1990 follow-up, "Empire", and co-produced 1994's "Promised Land". The rest of the music and vocals were laid down at several different facilities on the West Coast.

In a recent interview with Metal Assault, QUEENSRŸCHE drummer Scott Rockenfield stated about QUEENSRŸCHE's renewed collaboration with Barton: "It's a great thing — we're really excited about it, he's really excited about it. We've wanted to work with him for a while, but for whatever reason, we just hadn't gone there yet. This is a great time for us to do that, though. We all discussed who we wanted to do the record with, and he was one of the first names that came up. It was easy for us to pick up the phone and call him. It was like our relationship picked up right where it left off, so it's gonna be a lot of fun. He's a very creative guy that did some great records with us in the past. I think that's one of the most important things when it comes to why we want to work with him."

Asked if fans will see a return to the progressive metal sound QUEENSRŸCHE had in the '80s, Scott said: "What we're trying to do, and what has been really interesting since Todd has jumped into the band, we're trying to revisit the old QUEENSRŸCHE catalog — stuff off of the EP and "The Warning". That's always been a part of what we are, so yeah, definitely! I think in my opinion, we're really revisiting that vibe of why that music was special back then for us. There will be a modern flair to it, though, just because we're in the modern age. The fun thing about Jimbo being a part of it is that he can help tie together the two sides. He does come from our past and some of the great records and some of the great sounds that we're known for, but he's also living in the modern age and doing some interesting things as well. I think it's going to be a really great QUEENSRŸCHE record. People are going to go, 'Wow, that's QUEENSRŸCHE! That sounds just like what we've known them to be, and what we would expect them to now be.' That's what I think peple will get out of it."

The band get better and better with every video I see. Todd has revitalized them and brought back the energy that Vest destroyed.

These videos are great! Vocals are dead on, band is on point, and the crowd is large and enthusiastic. Also did I hear Todd throw in a bit of a death metal growl in The Warning? Nice touch. It actually fit in that moment.

So, it is easy to say this new guy is good for a cover band. How about his, HE is the new singer and performs in a great way the songs we all grew up listening to. If you prefer the spiting guy, just put the original records. I like them too and listen from time to time, but is a new line up and they are playing the metal we like, so STFU and enjoy, or just fuck off. Thanks

Like a fine wine they will get better and better with time where as with the Vest the cheap box wine just makes the vest sound horrible.

Hats off to the band for making such a huge decision and fighting for the QR legacy or what was left of it.

Tate isn't QR he is now a solo artist playing QR music. Where as the core band has replaced it's weak spot and has moved forward with the future of the band with Todd singing.

We all understand loyalty, but sometimes the capt has to be thrown overboard before the ship sinks and in this case the former capt has a vest :)

With each passing day, part of my soul dies. Slides away from me. And I sit here in desperation, waiting for clips from Geoff Tate'a Queensryche (hallowed be his voice) to surface, clips that reaffirm my belief in something holy, something pure. And yet nothing surfaces and I wonder: Have I been forsaken? Has my Lord abandoned me?

I stare at the Heavens wait. I don't need much, just a sliver of hope, something that tells me better days are ahead, that Tate and his "all-stars" wise rise forth and reclaim the mantle of pure metal.

How can someone 'headbang too much'? I didn't think it was an Operation Mindcrime for Todd to openly enjoy the music, FFS!?!?

I think the fans have been so shortchanged for decades by Tate with his severe lack of Rock / Metal credentials and mincing nu-romantic stage persona that people forget that Queensryche ARE a fuckin' Rock / Metal band & their music CAN & SHOULD be celebrated with some neck-flexing!

It's great to finally see an enthusiastic and more than capable frontman in this band that actually enjoys the shit out of being on stage performing these old classic songs instead of a bitter, jaded, resentful, tired & emotional mascara wearing trollop who thinks he's fronting a David Bowie cover band.

All I care about is that these videos prove Todd can hit the notes and along with the rest of the band he's putting 110% into the performances. It's not about being a xerox of Tate, it's about having his own identity and approach to singing the songs. If Todd was exactly like Tate, the band wouldn't have him in there in the first place.

Queensryche are back to doing what they do best... NO Theatrics... NO Bullshit... just a simple backdrop, a wall of Marshall's & Rocking The Fuck Out!!! I look forward to hearing their new album and seeing them on tour...

I am too, but I'm sure the performances will be ok, not so much Vest, or the drummer, but everybody else should be solid. I just can't get over how he tries to call himself Queensryche when three of the founding members are in the real one. Kind of like great white, but since I think GW sucks, I'll never care which one carries on....

I also love that he thought coming out of the gate with a new, from what I've heard, crappy album was going to do anything good for him.

If you embrace the music, nay, the genius of Geoff Tate, you don't need an iTunes account. You can simply lie back and open your heart and the music will find you. It will flow over you, swirl around you, each note an eddy of unsurpassed brilliance and fragrance.

The real question is this: Do you have the courage to embark on such a journey?

I said this before, I am not defending Tate because I won't go see his version either. But I don't get the love fest for LaTorre, he is often off key, definitely can't hit the high notes and completely lacks any kind of stage presence. Try listening with your ears for instead of your hate for Tate, he is really not very good. Again last time I saw QR at the Myth in Maplewood, MN they sold it out and it's capacity is about 3000, neither version of QR will sell half that many tickets. And both records will be shitty, sounds to me like they all lost.

You are right about the stage presence and charisma, Todd has none. His head banging routine is boring. He reminds me of Blaze Bayley when he fronted Maiden with his air drumming moves lol. BUT I would say that Latorre is nailing Tate's voice very good. He is perfect at recreating Tate's voice from the 80's, no doubt. Will he be able to take this band to a better place musically where Tate has failed to do in the last 10 years? We shall see.

The thing I find interesting is that he sounds exactly like Tate. AC/DC, VAN Halen, etc. all replaced singers with guys who were in the same ballpark but were not attempting to clone the previous singers voice. These guys are clearly going for the nostalgia thing. Tate wanted to try new directions, unfortunately the directions he chose were brutal. It's likely a scam anyway so they can cash in on the reunion bucks in 2 or 3 years.

First of all, to all the hearing impaired Blabbermouth posters: this guy DOES NOT sound "exactly" like Geoff Tate. He does, however, sound exactly like someone trying to imitate Geoff Tate... an imiTATEr, if you will.

Second, there's something I find incredibly contrived about this band's new image and sound (based on the clips of the new material)--none of it seems like a natural progression from anything they've done. It seems more like they're trying to cash in on metal's relative popularity. C'mon, skulls? I've never known Queensryche to be so "metal". In fact, that's one of the things that always made them stand out--the fact that they were different and always trying new things.

Even if we're to believe that Geoff Tate is responsible for the band's misdirection over past 1x years, that doesn't explain what they were doing while Degarmo was still around...which was already a far step from being the "all-out metal" band that they are trying to pass themselves off as now.

Whip & Eddie have always been long haired, metal/rock dudes. Whip has had skulls on his guitars and shirts even during the gay cabaret shit.. Rockenfiled? Yeah, maybe... but Whip, Eddie, Parker, & La Torre have always been hard rock/metal guys. Tate & Degarmo dropped the rock look back in 1994. There is nothing contrived about what they are doing - they were just being held back.

Todd isn't perfect, but I will take this version of Queensryche any day over the garbage version that has existed since 1997.

I'll never forget going to the 'Hear in the Now Frontier' tour in 1997; Degarmo wearing a green frilly shirt with white pants, Tate wearing a big red shirt with a jazz singer haircut... I thought 'this is Queensryche?'

But Whip & Eddie have always been long haired rock/metal guys, and Scott is bald, lol...

Todd and Parker bring back the hard rock/metal aspect of Queensryche which is what I fell in love with 'back in '86'

The bottom line is the ONLY music I want to see Queensryche play live is the EP, Warning, RFO, and Mindcrime stuff. Empire has it's moments but its too cheesy.

EP, Warning, RFO, and Mindcrime: Everything else, with a few songs here and there, is fucking garbage.

Empire: Cheesy, commercial, hair band rock.

Promised Land: Brilliant in some places, not so good in others.

HINTF: Fucking garbage, except for 'Hit The Black'

Q2K: Fucking garbage, except for 'Right Side'

Tribe: Fucking garbage with no exceptions.

OM2: Has some good songs 'Rearrange You', 'The Chase'... but it wasn't written by the band! Overall, its a shitty record.

American Soldier: Even worse than anything previously done. Complete filth.

Dedicated to Chaos: Absolute worst, piece of fucking trash on the Planet Earth.

Geoff Tate solo? First album was...interesting...but not great. 'Kings & Thieves" ? Fucking garbage.

Frequency Unknown: Song clips sound terrible. Tate's voice is shot to hell.

So, really imo, the REAL Queensryche album coming out on June 11 is the last hope. It must be a great record or they are toast.

When you have (formerly) world class shoes like Tate's to fill, its a hell of a climb to get there. Latorre obviously didnt just impress WIlton with his voice, it was probably the whole package sine the guy plays every instrument on his demo albums (and they contain some cool modern prog/power metal, the type youd find a playing at prog power usa)..Now I dont know how he got midnights job if hes as bad as some are saying. Yes, the early Rising West clips were a little uneven but i see latorre getting more consistent and better each one i hear..doesnt mean he doesnt have issues of his own as far as consistency, but he HAS gotten a lot better each time i hear him, thats the point. If you listen to to the remakes done on FU and Latorre, theres NO FUCKING CONTEST that Latorre sounds better

even too much headbang for a thrash metal frontman and this should be a prog show :/ and a new song is needed.

...that if you disagree with the Tate hate crowd you are slagged and cursed at? So much for intelligent debate.
The band was good, TLT was ok too, but it still strikes me as a cover band....this band needs to make a statement on their record, though I doubt it will.
Memo to both camps: retire the QR name. There is no real QR anymore. Tate, be a solo artist. Todd & co start over as Rising West.
THis is fair

I don't see them EVER getting back with Tate. He's burned all the bridges with his behavior & he & his wife's illegal wranglings behind the scenes.

There's absolutely no point in getting Tate back. Not ever. His voice is shot to hell. It was different when Dio, Halford and Dickinson got back to Sabbath, Priest and Maiden. Hell, even Ozzy with Sabbath. They still had the stuff. But Tate is a different story. He's basically finished as a hard rock singer. And he wasn't extremely famous to begin with.

Listen, La Torre might not be Tate circa 1986, but he's the best thing to happen to QR in 20 years. If you even compare Empire with Warning, Rage and Mindrcrime, you could hear Geoff already starting to slip. Gone was the full sounding head voice, and it was replaced by something nasally and throaty. Gone was the fullness that made Geoff special.
I saw QR in 2008, and they opened with The Whisper, and was completely psyched...until Geoff did the vocals a full fifth below what was on the record:

At least Todd attempts to do the vocals as they were recorded.
Geoff WAS the man, back in the day. Sadly, that shipped sailed 20 years ago.
