PAUL DI'ANNO: CLIVE BURR Is 'A Truly Unique Talent That Will Never Be Forgotten' - Mar. 14, 2013
British heavy metal vocalist Paul Di'Anno (pictured below) has released the following statement regarding the passing of fellow former IRON MAIDEN member, drummer Clive Burr, who died Tuesday night in his sleep at his home at the age of 56 after suffering from multiple sclerosis for many years:

"Sad to hear of your passing. You will always be in my heart, Clive. A truly unique talent that will never be forgotten."

Di'Anno recorded two classic albums with IRON MAIDEN before being fired and replaced by Bruce Dickinson. He went on to front a number of other bands, including KILLERS and BATTLEZONE, and released several solo records.

Clive joined MAIDEN in 1979 and performed on the first three albums — "Iron Maiden" (1980), "Killers" (1981) and "The Number Of The Beast" (1982). Prior to that, he was a member of SAMSON, the band Bruce Dickinson fronted before he, too, joined MAIDEN.

Just to clear the air around here.

Clive was on tour with Maiden when he had an sudden Family issue to take care of/i think a Parent Passed on.

Maiden boys said go ahead and take care of things and catch up with us in a few weeks.Nicko could play the drums and wanted to be the drummer for some time for he was the guy that walked on stage with an Eddie mask and spot light i think it was.Nicko did other things as a crew guy and said while Clive is gone i can play the drums.Clive and Nicko were Friends at the time so Clive was good with that.

Yes Clive was a bit Burned out on touring but he never quit!Clive was ready to get back to touring with the band.
When Clive returned he knew things were wrong and thats when the band said we are letting you go and Nicko is the new Drummer.

I was shocked like many of us metal heads when this shit came down!! Nicko wasnt loved for a while ya know!Clive was my Hero along with many other drummers/Fans!!

Truth be known,we were around,we knew other Musicians that knew better of things. This info was posted many years ago from the inside!

So.. Want to call Bullshit...Fine
It is what it is and History was made. Its in the books.

I have been a Drummer for a long time now and Clive will Always be a Hero to me! He is one of a kind Pure Oldschool Class act!!

R.I.P. or Friend....

No need to rip up in all this. As I understand Iron Maiden supported Clive financially in his illness, and that there wasn't really any bad blood between them. Bands change and what feels like the right lineup, might not feel so right later on. This is the natural development within a healthy band. Lets all just pay tribute to Clive Burr and leave the past behind. Up the irons, Clive!

I think there is far much more to it than this. Nicko said he was consoling Clive, and told him 'they're only going to let you go if you keep fucking up'. Nicko's wife (or gf) was apparently upset that Nicko was saying that, because Nicko needed the job. I think you are giving a condensed version of what really happened. I believe by statements made by other band members (including Adrian on the early days) that Clive was messing up. Adrian said in the Early Days 'if he had more time he probably could have sorted his issues out, but time was what we didn't have'. I find it VERY hard to believe that Clive was given no heads up based on these statements, and that your version is, well, at best *partly* based in truth.

I listened to the first three Maiden albums last night and after all of these years I'm still blown away by his drumming style. He was so vital to the formation of their 'galloping' sound. I know the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts but he was so essential to their formative sound.

I did read that clive was tired of the intense touring schedule and had some personnal issue to deal with but never read about Nicko taking more place in Maiden when he was away.

Anyone else think that the iconic "Run to the Hills" drum intro may have been "borrowed" from a song from the Buzzcocks called "Autonomy?" You be the judge:

RIP Clive Burr! You will be missed.

Clive was definitely NOT just another drummer. His drumming style had a certain frantic, almost thrashy quality to it that was unique and helped cement Maiden's unique attack on those first three albums. Killer feel.

Killers is still my favorite album followed by Powerslave, Piece of Mind, Seventh Son and the first album. With D'ianno and Burr they had a punk influence that disappeared when Dickinson took over.

You are rememberd Clive RIP

I know the band wanted Total Eclipse (fantastic song) on NOTB instead of Gangland, and many fans feel it was a weak track, but I always loved it, due in no small part to the drumming. It's also the song Clive co wrote.

I had the pleasure of seeing Clive with Iron Maiden twice on the "Killers" & "Number..." tours. Clive is amazing!!!!!

Both times Maiden was opening for Priest.

I have been into Maiden since Live after Death, and will also miss Clive! Hell of a drummer, and I always thought of him as a "proto" dave Lombardo, and after reading Dave's kind words, it looks like I wasn't far off....Clive was a unique drummer who killed it every night, and thankfully his playing will be preserved on tape for a very very very long time to come.n No way Maiden would have been as ear-catching in the early days without Clive, I hope he is resting in eternal comfort in metal heaven, jamming with Cliff, Gar, and Randy.

imagine Clive's family letting this benefit thief anywhere near him. Thank God Clive had people looking after him or Paul would have taken everything not nailed down.

Age will catch up to you one day as well.

Except when it does, you won't be able to say you recorded legendary records like Paul Di'Anno.

Clive was amazing, so is Nicko. A bit different in style and feel, but each masters of their own art. The first 3 albums would not have been the same without Clive, but Nicko was a perfect replacement for the albums that followed.
