TOOL Guitarist: 'Getting Together Is Very Hard' - Mar. 14, 2013
According to The Pulse Of Radio, TOOL guitarist Adam Jones has given a new interview to Revolver magazine about the upcoming 21st anniversary re-release of the band's debut EP, "Opiate", but naturally the conversation turned to the band's long-delayed new album. When questioned about its status, Jones replied candidly, "It's unfortunate that we haven't put anything out in a while, but you know, we've changed as a band. It's just like a marriage — you grow older, people change, and you've gotta adapt or move on. We've become even more eclectic and distant, so getting things done and getting together is very hard."

Jones insisted, however, that this was "not a bad thing," adding, "We live kind of cushy lives now, so we get together when we want. It makes everything go slow, which is unfortunate — we all would have liked to have been done with a new record a long time ago — but when it's done, it's gonna be good . . . We also had two really bad things happen, things that I'm not gonna get into, that set us back emotionally and mentally. But we're past them now, everybody's recovered, and that process has kind of actually added to us focusing on being creative."

Jones also spoke about the deluxe reissue of "Opiate", which will come in a limited edition of 5,000 copies with five different covers, new artwork and other bonus material. He said, "What I want is to go to the store and buy something and go, 'Damn, I got more than my money's worth.' I want something where you can tell a lot of time went into it."

Jones has always been deeply involved in TOOL's artwork and visuals, telling The Pulse Of Radio a while back that his interest started long before the band. "I've always been into art and drawing and sculpting, and I did makeup effects for a long time, and it's always been a big part of my life," he said. "And Maynard too, and, you know, the other band members — you know, when I met those guys, they were all doing something kind of creative, and I think that's why it clicks."

As for revisiting the music on "Opiate", Jones said, "It's kind of like a time machine. It takes you back to that time and what you were thinking. Creatively speaking, there's always room for improvement . . . but overall I like it. It's something I'm very proud of."

The 21st-anniversary edition of "Opiate" comes out on March 26.

Ah’ stop being so “obscure” and impressively avant-garde … trendily eccentric and make a new freaking album already. Get on with it!

Mot really... It's easy... you pick up the phone and say "Guys, rehearsal space in 30 mins"... like you guys always did when you started off... what's the difference? MASSIVE ego.... get rid of it.

Pretty much.........just set a timeframe a few months(3 to 6 or 8 months) out and you shouldn't have much problems. If people can't make time for the band when you look at it long term then maybe its just time to end it.

Getting "cushy" is the downfall of so many great bands. You can't put out something truly amazing when there's no drive or motivation.

Ass Willie Nelson once said, musicians write their best stuff when they're hungry.

can't "make" a successful band go into the studio and "make" a new album. Let alone make a "good" album.

The hunger has to be there. These guys could not care less about Tool. Some bands need inspiration and a need and want to make good music. Obviously Tool have zero inspiration and zero need and want.

Not making excuses for Tool being tools. But you just can't make any band go into the studio and make a great album because their fan base wanted them to.

It's wasted talent spent on making wine and other shit we really don't want from these guys.

Crying shame.

"families, children, getting older and your priorities in life change"

They're "excuses", wow that's harsh.

Other bands haven't had the success they have and so they don't HAVE to do anything, he says that right there in the interview about them being comfortable.

Face it, you are more motivated to make a new TOOL album than they are.

That's just the way it is. Otherwise the album would be out by now, it's their band not yours.

Need to think a little further down the road. Yes, the size of the royalty checks for the back catalog and merch might be quite sufficient right now.

But without new product, at some point that grinds to an end. Then you are a band that few remember from their glory days in need of money. That usually does not end well.

Put another way, a few hard weeks of work now banks your retirement.

At this point in their careers they don't need to rush things and I don't want them to rush either. When the hunger is there to make a new Tool album they will just do it and it will be great.

Every other band is in the same situation. Sure. Every other band's lead singer owns a vineyard and winery that produce commercially available wine, and co-owns another one, and get's his or her hands dirty doing a big part of the work (grape harvest is dictated by nature by the way, not the other way around). And then produces art the way Tool creates it. Yup. He also partly owns a restaurant and takes great care with his lyrics so they're not rushed and crappy.

Then you add families in on top of that, and various other creative endeavours or what have you.

"Hey guys, get in the rehearsal space now, or else." HAHAHA! I swear to god Blabbermouth is populated primarily by complete morons like linchpin313. Stop being selfish and trying to dictate how a band operates, especially when you don't even have a clue how said band operates. They're not all the same fool.

100% agree with you. Most people don't know how difficult and time consuming it is to own and manage a growing business. Even more a respected winery. I bet that Maynard is working harder right now than he had ever worked in his life. And that is why the only music he is putting out is Puscifer that he just do it to mess around and relax. By the way, making good wine is one of the coolest things in the world in my opinion.

Maynard hasn't been at all creatively invested in this band for about a decade now. I think the Lateralus tour burnt them out. Then the 10,000 Days cycle pretty much sealed the deal. They became one of the biggest bands in the world, made tons of money and accomplished a lot in terms of getting the mainstream on board with progressive/alt metal type stuff. They should stop fucking around and just call it what it is, a hiatus. Or even "indefinite" hiatus. Other bands use this nomenclature all the time when they don't want to be strait up about it. Tool can't even be bothered to be that specific.

I saw Tool at Mandalay Bay last year on that run they did and I can say that they were NOT playing well. it was a total cash grab just like 10000 days. There were 3 good songs on that album. If they want to wait that's up to them but I will download their next album for free and then determine if it's worth paying for.

Where does Tool get off acting like this? Don't they realize that once a band achieves a certain amount of success, they owe their entitled 'fans' everything, regardless of how ignorant or plain retarded they get? The audacity of musicians wanting to create music on their own schedule and terms, it's absolutely disgusting.

They should think long and hard about why they got into music, because if it wasn't for them to all live in the same part of the country so they can churn out album after album for no reason other than because people want them, they need to think again. Pfft, how could being in a massively popular and successful band be remotely difficult? I mean, I jam with my buddy's all the time after work, it's the exact same situation.
