RAINBOW's 'Live In Munich 1977' To Be Released On CD, DVD, LP In April - Mar. 13, 2013
On April 30, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release RAINBOW's "Live In Munich 1977" on 2CD, DVD, and 2LP.

Captured during the band's 1977 European tour, "Live In Munich" is the only full live concert ever filmed with the classic Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio/Cozy Powell classic lineup. With newly remastered sound, this is also the first time this complete concert is available on vinyl.

RAINBOW was the brainchild of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, created in 1975 after his departure from DEEP PURPLE. A string of hit albums ignited immediate success, which persevered until 1983, when Blackmore disbanded the group (and rejoined DEEP PURPLE). Featuring the line-up of Blackmore, Cozy Powell (drums), Bob Daisley (bass), David Stone (keyboards), and premiere rock and roll vocalist Ronnie James Dio, the excitement in the air during this night was electric. This might be due, in part, to Blackmore's late arrival to Munich just before the concert, after being smuggled out of Austria after trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier. This seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

The DVD includes original promo videos for "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll", "Gates Of Babylon" and "L.A. Connection", a photo gallery, slideshow with audio commentary, interviews, and the "Rainbow Over Texas '76" feature, which includes additional interviews and performance footage. Truly, "Live In Munich 1977" is a brilliant showcase of the primal electricity of RAINBOW.

Editorial Reviews

Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever-changing line up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line up responsible for the "Long Live Rock ’n’ Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier, and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

Tracklisting: 1. Kill The King 2. Mistreated 3. Sixteenth Century Greensleeves 4. Catch The Rainbow 5. Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll 6. Man On The Silver Mountain 7. Still I’m Sad 8. Do You Close Your Eyes

Bonus Features • Original promo videos for: 1) Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll 2) Gates Of Babylon 3) L.A. Connection • Interviews • Photo Gallery • Audio Commentary

This is VERY strange. This is currently available and just appears to be a repackaging scenario. Why not try and release the Rockpalast from the "Stranger in us all" tour? The Munich show is cool but it's a mediocre night from Blackmore. Anyone who knows the story of him being in jail for the few nights prior can probably understand why he couldnt have been at his best anyway. It's all we have though..sure wish the camera angles wrere better. Most cameras in Munich were far away and there is hardly any close ups. This DVD show is currently in CD stores. It would be nice if the DVD sound was a bit better though.

I first got a partial boot copy of this on VHS way back in 84. It's a treat seeing the Rainbow prop and Ritchie is for the most part great. The downside is that there is way too much aimless noodling by the band. Unlike Deep Purple, the other band members couldn't improvise too well and Rainbow's songs weren't suited as jam pieces. Also, it sucks that they didn't perform their masterpiece Stargazer. Those complaints aside, this is a must own for all Rainbow/Blackmore/Dio fans.

Yeah I've got this concert on DVD.

Scanning through the article, it says that the sound is newly remastered on this new release, so that appears to be a bit new.

I like this video. Everyone should make sure they've seen the video of Deep Purple Mark III appearing at the 1974 California Jam too. Truly essential.

Probably because the picture quality will be the same between DVD and blu-ray for something filmed in 1977

Great concert, but this has been out for years with the exact same packaging. I think it was released about 5 years ago.
