BLACK SABBATH In The Studio: Producer RICK RUBIN Speaks; First Audio Snippet Available - Mar. 13, 2013
BLACK SABBATH has released a new behind-the-scenes video online that features commentary from producer Rick Rubin (pictured below) about the making of "13", the band's new album — the first in 35 years to feature bassist Geeezer Butler, guitarist Tony Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne. Check it out below.

The new BLACK SABBATH album — the band's 19th overall — is due out in June. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include three seven-plus-minute behemoths "End Of The Beginning", "God Is Dead" and "Epic", as well as a track about killing pedophile priests ("Dear Father") and another about the scourge of methamphetamine addiction ("Methademic").

SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi was diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma at the end of 2011. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of cell that forms part of the immune system. Production on "13" stopped while Iommi began chemotherapy, but it wasn't long before he requested the band move operations from Rubin's Shangri-La studio in Malibu, California to England so he could work on material between treatment sessions.

"Tony's the kind of bloke that doesn't want to let us down," Butler told Guitar World. "He wouldn't let his illness interfere with this album. He wanted to get it done."

Iommi's illness was not the only setback to befall BLACK SABBATH during the creation of "13". Despite spending a year writing with the band, drummer Bill Ward opted out of the reunion in early 2012 over some well-publicized contractual disagreements. After much fan speculation regarding Ward's replacement, it was finally revealed this January that Brad Wilk — best known for his work with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and AUDIOSLAVE — had been brought in by Rubin to handle the album's drum duties.

"We'd have loved to have Bill on the album," Butler said. "But suddenly something came up. I went to Hawaii when Tony started his treatment, and when l came back, Bill wasn't in the band anymore."

"The only sad thing is that Bill couldn't keep it together," Osbourne told Revolver magazine. "It would have been great to have Bill with us. I've never understood the business side of this. I don't choose to go there. My wife does that for me, and Geezer's wife is his manager, and Tony's got his manager. So, I keep my nose out of it. But they couldn't come to an agreement with him. I mean, I still love him, and I wish him well, but…"

Although the band was skeptical at first about enlisting Wilk to lay down the drum tracks on "13", he proved up to the task.

"I was really surprised," Butler told Guitar World. "He had that Bill Ward kind of jazzy swing feel, rather than heavy metal bashing."

BLACK SABBATH last month released the first behind-the-scenes video online that takes viewers into the studio for a glimpse of the making of "13". All three original members seem enthusiastic about finally working together again after 35 years, with Iommi saying about the album, "You can't always repeat what you've done, you've just got to go on. It'll be today's version of how it was 40 years ago, I suppose."

Elsewhere in the video, Ozzy said, "This BLACK SABBATH album is quite possibly the most important album of my career," while Butler added, "We'll probably all be dead soon, so while we still can play and sing, then we've got to do it."

Can't wait to krank up the song they play a sample from after the Geezer says, "he has a Idea of he wanted the band to sound".

Rubin can squeeze out one more classic album.

So far it sounds promising.

Nothing against Bill Ward, (he SHOULD be drumming on this album), but the new guy seems to invigorated the band.
Seems to be invoking the primitive spirit of why Black Sabbath became a band in the first place.

THIS is the album I've been waiting for since Sabotage in 1975. THIS is the one I want to listen to over and over and not get sick of.

We'll see.

Let's not forget what Rick did for 'Tallica: fuck all. Rick's ability to make amazing albums has faltered over the years, but that's because the bands themselves have faltered. This album will be good because Tony Iommi writes great shit. It's not gonna be because of Rick Rubin...

Granted, I'm one of the ones that likes Death Magnetic. And I think it works because someone finally let them be who they are, instead of trying to change them to fit on the 90/00s bandwagon. Maybe something similar is needed for the next Sabbath record too.

I've liked Rick Rubin's work a lot more than I've ever disliked it. The guy knows what he's doing. I'm just so eager to hear this new Sabbath record!

It's pretty sad that so many on here and facebook can't even recognize that they are old Sabbath songs. The band did sound amazing back then too bad $haron Sabotaged the reunion...

That riff (2:31-2:32) as short a listen as available sounds good. Well - it inspired me to pick up and guitar and play it - or at least my version of it. Heavy and driving.

I am stoked to hear the whole album!

Hey man, I think most of us diehard Sabbath fans know Paranoid, Megalomania and War Pigs when we hear them...but there is a few seconds of NEW Sabbath on there and that's why we're all here.

And the new stuff sounds great. Ozzy sounds like Ozzy again...I'm hoping they keep his vocals raw and don't process the shit out of them like his last few solo albums.

Hopefully, Rick Rubin recorded this album like he did on the Slayer and Danzig albums that came out in the late 80's and early 90's, which all sounded great, and not like the most recent Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers albums, which have the levels way too high and you hear distortion, clipping and clicking throughout many songs.

After the backlash Rubin got over the Death Magnetic production, I'm praying he decided to go back to his earlier recording approach on this Black Sabbath album.

Many of us wouldn't be here reading this if it wasn't for Rick Rubin.

Moments in history just wouldn't have happened. i.e. Reign in blood would never have happened and Slayer would probably have been as relevant as Forbidden in thrash circles.
His engineer is the one mixing the albums, RR puts the thing together from the off.
Hopefully, they will go old school and go for a nice analogue sound.

Can't wait for the new BS album...

I am first and foremost a fan of Sabbath 1980-1991, but I also like the Ozzy years.

I have to say that I am very impressed with these clips. It doesn't sound like Dehumaziner III, which I was expecting. These songs sound like the old Sabbath. Lots of energy! Ozzy sounds great too!

I think this will be the reunion album everybody is hoping for!
