Former IRON MAIDEN Drummer CLIVE BURR Dies - Mar. 13, 2013
British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN have released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last night. He had suffered poor health for many years after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home."

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris said: "This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to MAIDEN in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time."

Added MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson: "I first met Clive when he was leaving SAMSON and joining IRON MAIDEN. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family."

Clive joined MAIDEN in 1979 and performed on the first three albums — "Iron Maiden" (1980), "Killers" (1981) and "The Number Of The Beast" (1982). Prior to that, he was a member of SAMSON, the band Bruce fronted before he, too, joined MAIDEN.

IRON MAIDEN established the Clive Burr MS Trust Fund in 2002 to benefit Clive Burr.

I like Nicko's drumming, but I have always felt they lost a slight edge in that regard after Clive, culminating with his brilliance on NOTB, my equal favourite album of all time along with Vol. 4. Thanks for the music, glad he isn't suffering with MS anymore.

Totally agree. Nicko is solid, but Clive was more unique, and had a certain swing. The drums on NotB are better than anything Nicko has done, IMHO. Again - I am NOT bashing Nicko.

R.I.P. Clive Burr.
My personal favorite Maiden drummer, I saw him on the Beast on the Road Tour, with Scorpions and Girlschool.
If you get a chance to check out "Beast Over Hammersmith", his drums are much fuller than the mix on Beast, and it is a tour de force.
You are missed Mr. Burr.

We all knew this day would eventually come, after years of fighting the good fight, MR Burr succumbed to his M.S. It deeply sadness me, yet, it is a comforting thought to realize he suffers no longer, as he passed peacefully i his sleep last evening. I saw Clive on the Killers & N.O.T.B.. tours respectfully. Both tours occurring in 1981 and 1982. I always admired his drumming technique and skills, even after Maiden when he recorded briefly with Trust, Alcatraz, Praying Mantis, Elixir, Desperado, et al. Even prior to Maiden when he was in Samson, Burr made an impact in the NWOBHM scene. In the UK and here across the pond, in the USA. My sincerest condolences to Mimi, family, and friends of Clive. You will not be forgotten, rest well.

Sad news. Seems like it was just yesterday that I saw the Judas Priest / Iron Maiden / Axe tour. That show was a big influence on my life.

Like many my favorite albums are the first two, I just prefer the punk influence on those first albums more than the power metal of the later years. Still a huge fan of Bruce and Nicko but Killers is still my favorite disc.

RIP Clive Burr you will be remembered.

Quintessential Iron Maiden drummer.
He had his own touch on first three Maiden albums.
Rest in Peace Clive Burr...

While I think Maiden has done great stuff throughout their entire career, I've always thought the best they ever sounded was at this Hammersmith performance.

Clive's drumming gave Maiden a very unique vibe back then and he was a very important part of their sound.

Clive, brother, you were an amazing person, humble, funny and genuinely nice and a HELL of a drummer. Your work with Maiden and Trust is unparelled.
I'll play Iron Maiden, Killers and the Number of the Beast in your honour today.
Have a nice journey.

by far. Sorry Nicko. Burr influened the best of the thrashers and many others. Love his tighter style, and the jazzy cymbal work, etc. I don't play air drums to Nicko much, but when I hear Clive I usually do..

Such an incredibly talented guy, who definitely was a forerunner of and huge influence on the all the extreme drumming styles we hear in metal today. Just watching him do those fills in the old "Run To The Hills" MTV video clip---I'm sure that image alone launched a million drumming careers back in the day. Still impresses when I see and hear that clip today.

I'm no drummer, and I certainly mean no disrespect to the talented McBrain, but to my ears Burr's drumming on those first three albums always sounded far superior, tighter, more dynamic, than anything from McBrain on the subsequent albums.

RIP, Clive.

I believe even Bruce Dickinson said something to that effect a while back, much as he/we admire and appreciate Nicko. As far as I can tell, Clive just wasn't being professional enough on tour for Steve's liking, much like Dianno. It's a shame, but at least he seemed genuinely thankful and humble to say yeah, I was in Maiden, I am on NOTB, no one can take that away.

The man has been out of Iron Maiden for 3 decades and is so well-remembered. Clive Burr has left his mark on music history and will never be forgotten.

The beginning of "The Prisoner" must have put a smile on millions of faces... :)

Clive Burr and Kim Ruzz brought the 16th notes into metal and didn't make it sound like disco -- they were innovators for that -- and I commend them

I am quite saddened by this.

Rest in peace, Clive. You were one hell of a drummer, played an important and memorable part on those first 3 landmark Maiden records, and from what I saw of you in interviews, you seemed like a rather decent guy. I wish I could've met you.

The first passing in the Maiden family. The day after Steve Harris's birthday, no less.

RIP, Clive!! \m/

Very sad indeed. Clive is the first person from the maiden camp to leave us, and the third from Samson.

Clive was incredible back in the maiden-days. He had this amazing tight, fast-paced and heavy style that made the early maiden years great as hell. No disrespect to Nicko, but he never played those songs quite as good, tight and cool as Clive did.

R.I.P. Clive. Thanks for the amazing, life changing music!
