JOURNEY May Be Done Recording New Music - Mar. 6, 2013
According to The Pulse Of Radio, JOURNEY's recording days might be a thing of the past. Due to shifting audiences and the general nature of the music business, keyboardist Jonathan Cain thinks that maybe the band is done releasing new music. JOURNEY's last studio album, "Eclipse", was released in May 2011. The Walmart exclusive debuted on The Billboard 200 album chart at No. 13 — eight spots lower than the band's previous album, 2008's "Revelation" — which also went on to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.

Jonathan Cain told The Pulse Of Radio that the pressing need for new JOURNEY music has seemed to fade. "Y'know, we're not convinced the market will bear another CD from us, y'know?" he said. "And it's so much work to make one. Y'know, maybe we get a soundtrack shot with a movie. And the last album we made was a departure. It was Neil [Schon's] 'I wanna do one this way once' — and so we did. Y'know, we did a heavy, rock n' roll record. And it kinda wasn't received very well here in the States and they kinda liked it in Europe and that's kinda what I thought was gonna happen and it barely sold 100,000 [copies]."

Cain went on to explain that after "Eclipse" failed to score with both old fans and new converts, the entire band has had to pause and take stock of where they're at creatively.

"After all that time and money, y'know, what are we doing here, y'know?" he said. "So, we have a great catalogue here, right now to play. We got a lot of songs that we're not even playing. So, we're like, 'What's the point of makin' a new CD right now?' Y'know, if anything, we'll make an EP."

JOURNEY will next appear on Thursday (March 7) with DEEP PURPLE in Perth, Australia.

Coming to theatres on Friday (March 8) in select cities — and available starting Saturday (March 9) on most On Demand services — is "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey".

The film chronicles the rags-to-riches story JOURNEY's current Steve Perry-sound-alike lead singer, Arnel Pineda, from his poverty stricken days in the Philippines to fronting the band today.

.... we knew you were done with Steve Perry left.

Seriously, just be glad you can pull in crowds live, and enjoy living off the past songs with your YouTube hired gun at the mic.

I don't know, I thought I was wiser back when I was a closed-minded metal snob, but only when I started letting more classic rock non-metal bands like Journey in was I shown the true scope of metal and rock as a whole, and now feel much wiser because of it.

It's weird when a person can barely speak english but can nail the words when they sing. That said, there's only one Steve Perry. Imitators are just not the same...

But it had nothing to do with Neil's wanting to make it a more guitar oriented album....it's not like it sounds like Cannibal Corpse or anything....if anything I really enjoyed the guitar oriented sound...it still sounded like Journey only with louder guitars.

When Greg Rolie left the band, seriously. That dude has some great pipes and an amazing sense of melody. Not to mention he is a hell of pianist and organist. They were good before Perry joined, great while Rolie and Perry were in the band together then departed to pop rock crapdom once Cain joined. It looks like Rolie is getting back with Santana for a record (and Schon too from what I heard) and hopefully tour so we do have that to look forward to - maybe some good Santana again!

Nah... you can label it Pop Rock or whatever, but great songwriting is great songwriting... How can you really dismiss those songs on Escape and Frontiers? Obviously, they really resonated with people.

I didn't like Eclipse, but I loved Revelations! I hope they don't stop recording new music. They pulled themselves out of their post-Perry funk & now they're just gonna be a nostalgia act now? F*ck that!

You know you live a jaded existence when 100,000 copies sold is nothing to you .especially in this record buying climate. Those guys should have more than enough money in the bank to be able to make an album for the love of the band and music.

The problem isn't the market, it's that "Eclipse" didn't have a single memorable song on it.

"Revelation" was actually quite good and I thought they might have another solid album or two in them after that. Bummer.

The problem with music today is that there really isn't that much promotion for it any more. Back in the 80s when MTV played music it was a big thing to get a video up on it and when a band did the album usually took off.

Nowadays there's really no promotion beyond American Idol pop shit and stuff targeted towards kids. There's not all that many real rock radio stations any more and those that are around tend to only play classic rock and hits from the past.

You can't expect to release something and only have a small core audience know that it exists and expect it to sell millions of copies.

As a 13 or 14 year old I remember when Escape came out. We had 4 tapes in rotation at that time: Journey's Escape, Asia's latest release at that time (remember Heat of The Moment?), AC/DC 's for those about to rock and Blizzard of Oz. Good times indeed!

Pfffft, probably like 90% of bands would be lucky as hell if they sold that well, especially for 2011. But these guys are bullshit, I just checked and 2008's Revelation is selling Platinum in the US. But that one's a double album with half being re-recorded tracks, so that makes it double. So the number is 1,600,000. So cut that in half and it's 800,000 still pretty impressive. Whereas something like KISS's SOnic Boom from the same year is only selling around 300,000 total. Basically these guys are full of it.

The snarky part of me wants to say 'good' cause i've heard some of that last album and wow is it terrible.

But then part of me thinks, well, good for them. There are not that many musicians who are honest enough with themselves to admit stuff like this, ie, the public simply does not care about hearing new music from us, so why don't we just give our audience what they want!

I am tired of bands saying "we're done releasing new music." So basically you're saying that you've gone as far as you can go as a musician and artist? What that says to me is that all you've cared about all along is album sales and mass appeal.

Here's to guys like Izzy Stradlin, releasing album son iTunes only - how many of those do you think he's selling? But, he's creating - not giving a damn about popular opinion. More people should follow this lead. I guess I'm in the minority, wanting the bands I love to do something new, no matter how it's accepted.

Dude, just because I don't listen to the same music I did when I was 15, that doesn't mean I'm a smob or unwise. It simply means that I find Journey just doesn't move me any more. I've started to appreciate all forms of music; I just prefer metal - that's all. Try to wrap your pubescent mind around that.

Is when you lose you LEAD singer and replace him with a 4 ft. asian frontman for an American band, it doesn't look right. Plus, if it was Neal's idea for the album eclipse, don't ever let him have another idea. It sucked! When they decide to get back with Steve Perry, I'll listen to Journey once more. Until then, I hope to GOD I never have to hear "Don't stop believing" ever again in my lifetime!
