METALLICA Frontman: 'We're Trying To Write, But Gigs Keep Popping Up' - Mar. 6, 2013
Dave "Higgo" Higgins of Australia's long-running rock station Triple M conducted an interview with METALLICA frontman James Hetfield during this year's Soundwave festival in Australia. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

Regarding the progress of the songwriting sessions for METALLICA's follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic", Hetfield said: "Yeah, we're trying to write [new material], but gigs keep popping up that are too exciting to stay home for. We have lots of material [we've been] working on from the day 'Death Magnetic' ended all the way up until now.

"There's tons of material. Some [riffs] stick with me because the theme keeps coming back. Out of 700 riffs, there's at least three I've played 20 times."

Asked what the new material is sounding like, Hetfield said: "I don't know where it's going yet but we've got lots of different sounds, different styles. We're certainly not afraid of jumping into past 'feels.'

"After 'Death Magnetic', we've stopped running hard and started embracing some of our past. 'Master Of Puppets' was kind of a core reference for 'Death Magnetic'."

On the topic of how he responds to fans who want METALLICA to make an album that sounds like their old stuff, like "Master Of Puppets", Hetfield said: "Let's not do that, shall we?! It's a catch-22, because I completely understand what people want. It's like they're asking you to recreate a memory in their past and you cannot do that. It's a moment of time.

"We're one of those bands that doesn't really care what people want.

"We have been artists since day one. We're not going to roll over for anyone and, you know, we're METALLICA for a reason and we're going to keep doing that."

METALLICA's much-anticipated 3D movie, "Metallica Through The Never", will make its theatrical debut on August 9.

"Metallica Through The Never" will be the first new release via Picturehouse, the full-service independent film marketing and distribution company started in 2005, which is reopening its doors with founder Bob Berney at the helm. The film, written and directed by Nimród Antal ("Kontroll", "Predators"), stars members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle", "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"). DeHaan plays a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down.

"The idea started off as a best-of show," Hetfield said. "Taking all the effects and props and ideas from all the tours from 'Ride The Lightning' all the way up… 'Kill 'Em All' was just us and a Vodka bottle.

"The footage is unbelievable but we wanted a storyline along with it... [It's] about one of the runners in the show who goes on this crazy adventure trying to find this 'bag' that we need for the end of the show. There is a plot, but we're still trying to figure it out!"

Interview (audio):

Just give us Garage Days Part III - you haven't written a decent song since the late 90s...

I wonder if their are any more recorded songs from AJFA or any other 80's era albums sitting around that never made it on those albums...those would be the only songs I would care to ever hear from this band....RIP Metallica

as a teenager these guys, and hetfield in particular, were gods to me... They wrote what they wanted alright, and because they were pretty much the same kind of dudes as the fans, the fans loved it.

Now they're just dick head, famous, millionaire rockstars - so out of touch with their fanbase that they couldn't rekindle that special vibe from the classic era even if they wanted to.

Metallica died years ago. Much like the Rolling Stones - but it's not gonna stop the money making fame machine rolling forward!

Are you seriously comparing Metallica to the Rolling Stones? Even career wise, they're miles apart, never mind 20yrs or so older. Get out more.

Metallica have recorded 2 albums of new material in the last 15 years. I can't think of any other band that have never actually split up that have released such little new music. One of those was absolutely dreadful as well. It's hard to care about them any more, I agree with UlverShuggah, this band mean very little to me nowadays.

"Yeah, we're trying to write [new material], but gigs keep popping up that are too exciting to stay home for"...errr or are worth too much money.
As a band they did help to define metal, as a modern day reference they are so far out of the park that James can make comments like the above & "We're one of those bands that doesn't really care what people want" - they are finished. When a band and a group of individuals never need to work again then either work for the fans or fukk off. Live gigs yes are for the fans, so why not tap back into your roots and produce an album for the fans that is worthy of you, your legacy and the adolation of your fans that have got you to where you are now. Otherwise all you do is perpetuate the "some kind of monster" film. I hesitate to say this but you come across a arrogant rather than humble which is what you should be. Take a leaf outa Randy Blyth's book JameZ

I was going to point out that these guys tour way too much. Death Magnetic imo was a solid enough album but you could tell it was a little unfocussed and the ideas were too stretched out, it's symptomatic of a band who jam on the road too much and don't sit down and write a song properly.

disconnected. funny how at one time I judged other bands in comparison to Metallica and usually said band never could hold a candle. Unfortunately that stopped with AJFA. So many other bands still did it right and still are, Testament, Overkill, Anthrax (aside from their drama). Metallica-Inc. should just retire to their millionaire lifestyle and just be a memory of what was once a great era in metal history.

Remember when bands used to tour and put out an album every year? Many a classic album came out during that album-tour, album-tour grind.

Funny how things change has time goes on.

Back in the old days, songs and albums were written, recorded, produced, packaged, and sent out to stores in literally weeks.

Nowadays, you got guys like Metallica, GNR, and so many others saying how they've been writing songs since their last album which was years, and even decades ago, and yet the quality has dropped significantly in a lot of bands.

Maybe the message is that spending insane amounts of time, over analyzing every note is not what makes a great song/album.

Just get in there, play what feels good at the moment, record it once or twice, then send it out. It worked in the 70's and 80's, when some of the best rock/metal came out.

I've been coming here forever and the same shit always comes up, "Why won't they make an album of stuff the real fans want to hear?".

I think it's fairly obvious that they cannot make the record that everyone is clamoring for, plain and simple. The band is over 30 years old, they lost that angst and hunger when we made them millionaires. Blame yourself, don't blame people who have become adults. This shit happens to everyone. Who the fuck makes amazing records 30 years down the line?

You know why Overkill is still incredible? Because you fucks didn't buy their records.

How they can even pretend they're a band at this point is beyond me. I guess the people that go see them live now do it pretty much for the same reason as they'd go see the Stones... you go see a monument, a tribute to the-greatness-that-used-to-be.

That's kind of morbid...

Amen bro, if they make decent music like in DM and the EP I will still listen to them, but I will NOT see them live anymore. This band is a joke live nowadays, now they are more metal than ever and in the 90´s they despised it. Fuck them for that. Everytime I remember the Load photos I cringe. In the 90´s this band is dead for me St. Shit included.

They're more corporation now than band. Twisted and evil.

Do they really need to do new albums at this point? Just tour as a nostalgia act, as you're really only a step away from that at this point.

James' got a point though... I mean, they couldn't recreate Puppets even if they really wanted to. It was a combination of the people that made it, the world around them, their position in the scene at a particular moment of time... Cliff's been dead for almost 30 years now. The Cold War, Reagan, the 80s in general are ancient history. Music has changed, society's changed, mentalities have changed. Y'know what I mean?

I think what a helluva lot of us are wanting is just some semblance to the ass-kicking songs with balls that you used to write prior to 1990. Not a total replica of RTL or Master....but certainly not the uninspired, boring crap you've been delivering for the last 20 years.

You could learn a lesson or two from Maiden, Motorhead and Testament.

Exactly why it takes Metallica 5+ years to release albums, and why Hetfield's voice is so shot, they play WAY too many gigs. They don't need the money, they're just putting off doing work writing.

Anyone who thinks Death Magnetic and Beyond Magnetic were good is a disillusioned fanboy. The quality of the music and recording was horrid. I'm embarrassed to admit that I purchased that CD, thinking it'd be good.

In regards to this comment. Gigs keep popping up? I call bullshit. James has become lazy and would rather live off of the glory days of the 80s material than make an attempt to write something else that might actually sound good.
