IRON MAIDEN's NICKO MCBRAIN Weighs In On BLACK SABBATH And SLAYER Drummer Drama - Mar. 2, 2013
In a brand new interview with the Broward Palm Beach New Times, IRON MAIDEN drummer Nicko McBrain was asked to weigh in on the contractual disputes that have forced SLAYER's Dave Lombardo and BLACK SABBATH's Bill Ward out of their respective bands in recent months.

"Most of the issues that pro musicians have sooner or later in time boils down to the royalty check or performance royalties," Nicko said.

"I'm sad to hear that that has happened, but, you know, when you find out and look at something and say, 'Could you explain this to me, why we're not getting what we should according to these numbers?' and if somebody turns around and says, 'Fucking shut your face or you're fired,' that therefore it tells you there's an alarm bell going off. Without knowing all of the ins and outs of it, you can't pre-judge it.

"But yeah, the Bill Ward story, I understood that Sharon Osbourne got her fangs into that one. It's beyond me — I mean, Bill Ward was the original freaking band member, you know? It just doesn't make sense to me. If I was entitled to more, I don't really want to know; I'm happy!

"You have to ask yourself this: How did Dave Lombardo get the information that led to this problem, is what I'd like to know. Who gave him the financials, if he wasn't on top of it with an accountant already?

"I'm sad because Dave is so much a part of that band; he's so identifiable. There's great drummers out there, but Dave Lombardo is a master with it, and Dave is... to me, he is SLAYER with Kerry [King, guitar] and the guys! I think Kerry really may have overreacted and might be regretting it. I hope that that's the case and they can sit down and sort it out."

He didn't know.... In the actual interview, Nicko says that he was with Dave a couple of weeks ago and Dave didn't say anything... It was the interviewer who told Nicko that "Apparently he came to Kerry King regarding some financial discrepancies and they fired him."

Yeah! Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith left once because there was too much love in the air in Iron Maiden and Paul Dianno and Blaze Bailey just got love for Maiden the way they got treated.

Do you REALLY know the way the got treated? Paul was fired because of his behaviour, Blaze Bailey (the same as Ripper Owens in Judas) was the fit at the moment (perfect or not, especially with Blaze, that is subjective), and then BOTH Bruce and Rob come back. Why? Their popularity was dwindling and they needed to relaunch their careers, otherwise both bands would have quit. What would you do, wise man?

Not only band members that get along, but a manager with the ability and best intentions for everyone, fans included, from the start, unlike so many managers, like past Sabbath managers, who only cared about their own personal takings.

The guys in Maiden probably started looking after their money years ago (investments..etc...) and don't need to screw the drummer, singer, guitar player.... in order to live comfortably. I'm guessing the guys in Slayer did not invest their money wisely, and therefore need to screw an integral part of the band like the mighty Dave Lombardo. No Lombardo, no Hanneman= NO SLAYER!!!!

Bruce Dickinson soloalbums didnt sell and he went bankrupt and Maiden didnt sell many albums with Blaze Bailey and played in small venues.

Thats a fact and thats why Bruce went back too Maiden and why Maiden took him back.

Maiden still puts out quality music and are the utmost professionals. Slayer on the other hand, hasn't released a great record since Seasons. Slayer still exists on name and reputation alone, nothing else. It's been 23 years since Slayer has put out anything of quality.

Sorry, you can say that you haven't liked the last 4 or 5 slayer albums, but to say they haven't released anything of quality in 23 is total bullshit. Is your band just blowing away slayer on a daily basis? See, you're a fan, entitled to your own opinion, but when you start writing things objectively sucking, you have no leg to stand on because taste is not universal, eveybody likes different things.

And if you think Maiden hasn't hit a rut in the last 5 or 6 albums, then I can't see where you can defend them and be against slayer, becasue both bands have been putting out albums that are similar to the album prior to it for the last 15 years. I love both bands, and think both have put out great stuff, but your statement is pretty fucking weak.

Be honest to yourself Maiden hasn?t put out a solid record since 1988 Seventh Son of A Seventh Son sad but true.

Slayers last solid record came in 1990 Seasons In The Abyss.

Good to hear Nicko sticking up for his fellow skin bashers! As Vinny Appice also said, it's all about the money and has nothing to due with Bill's health or ability to perform. Sadly, Geezer, Ozzy and Tony don't have the nut sack to stick up to their greedy lawyers (wives) and make a Black Sabbath reunion happen.

I think it's sad and pathetic that no one blames the BAND MEMBERS for the situation with Bill in Black Sabbath. People don't like Kerry King, so he is to blame. But everyone likes Ozzy, Tony and Geezer, so it must be that bitch manager. What the fuck? Was a lawyer there recording Symptom Of The Universe with them? Did a manager write Megalomania? They fucked their own drummer and everyone let it happen because no one wants to blame the "nice guys". That's just fucking bullshit! If they knew everyone would hold them accountable instead of blaming people behind the scenes, they would have demanded that Bill be involved. Every time someone says "Fuck Sharon" they're just allowing us all to get screwed. She's more than happy to take the blame. But she doesn't owe me anything, the fucking BAND does! How about Fuck Ozzy, Fuck Geezer, Fuck Tony? They are the ones responsible!

Of course they have bills to pay, but their bills have increased with their lifestyle expectations. I'm sure you know plenty of people who had to file for bankruptcy despite making much more money than you do.

When making more money to support your lifestyle is your primary goal, you do anything to keep it going, even steal from your bandmates.

Sharon and others on the managment side of music is convincing bands that the drummer is expendable, record with drum machines or offer someone else less money so the band leaders/road managers can make more. Rock is starting to cannibalize itself. Getting away from true bands, leaning toward singer song writers who just have hired guns not members.

Maiden has had their share of drama in the past though...Bruce could be a real pain in the ass and has always been an egomaniac.

Luckily he's mellowed a bit with age.

Steve is beyond lucky that he found Rod Smallwood as a manager. He's been with them since the beginning, and he turned Maiden into a well-oiled machine.

He cares about the money, obviously, but he understands Steve's integrity first and foremost, and would never push the band into something they weren't okay with.

That's a crock. I'm so tired of this "Slayer hasn't done anything good since SiTa" talking point.

Divine Intervention was great...different, but great, and World Painted Blood was fucking awesome. The production sucked unfortunately, but the songs were top-notch.

Even Christ Illusion was pretty damn good in parts...there were a few really good songs on there.

Didn't like GHUA much aside from a few songs. Too nu-metal with juvenile tough guy lyrics.

Yeah lets see since 2006 we'll do a comparison

Ozzfest: since that night dead.
Maiden: Biggest American tour last year in decades. Sells out stadiums everywhere else in the world. Can Ozzy do that? That's not sarcasam it's a simple question can he or can't he?

Just for good measure let's compare management

Smallwood: Since 99 has rebuilt Maiden into one of the biggest bands in the world.
Osbourne: Destroyed Ozzfest. Screwed up Sabbath. Spends more time on daytime TV then anything else these days.

So who do you think is better off?

I don't think Sharon lost money on the last Ozzy album and tour, but it certainly didn't do as well as previous albums and tours. I can easily believe she destroyed Ozzfest by offering the bands less and less money and alientating many with the Maiden egging incident.

I'm sure the Maiden guys are better off now. They don't have to pay big penalties for failing to pay their taxes, for one thing, nor are they addicted to cosmetic surgery.

COMMENT | SITA was the last great Slayer album - no "talking point"

Aces_High99, from one huge Maiden fan to another:

I truly think that Seasons In The Abyss was indeed Slayer's last oustanding album. I've stated it many times before here on Blabbermouth and I stand by my point:

Divine Intervention was a letdown - and since then Slayer didn't improve.

For reasons inexplicable to me, after Seasons Slayer and Rubin switched from Andy Wallace to Toby Wright behind the mixing desk. Since then, every Slayer album sounded like a jam session in a coal cellar. Guitars without sharpness and bite, drums like cardboard boxes, overcompressed, muddy, without any dynamic.

Andy Wallace is the man and every band is well-advised to get this guy.

The songwriting lacked direction and structure and lost any trace of the catchiness of many songs on Slayer's "holy trinity" (Reign, South, Seasons). Araya changed to a screamo approach and lost some of his cool melodic venomous bite.

And Bostaph, though a great thrash drummer, could not really replace Lombardo. For me, Grip Inc.'s Power Of Inner Strength was, in some strange way, the legitimate successor of Seasons In The Abyss - stellar production and musicianship, inventive songwriting, carismatic vocals and lyrics that make you think. And Lombardo put to rest all the doubts concerning his double bass playing (to be heared on Decade Of Agrssion).

As for Maiden: Although I really like AMOLAD, I'm quite sick of Kevin Shirley at this point and I'd love to hear the results of a collaboration with Roy Z ('Arry won't have any of it, unfortunately). Nicko rules and as I stated on the last Slayer thread, it's all about the signature style.

Seasons is a poor man's south of heaven bro. God Hates Us All has TONS of sharp guitar tones, some compressed, some not so much. Catchiness on songs like new faith, Scrum, bitter peace, playing with dolls, human strain, 213, ect. proves your argument as invalid.

Anybody who think's Grip Inc. is a scuccessor to anything Slayer related is drinking acid laced orange juice and smoking crack with idiots.

People like you are an absolute joke. You make all these claims about music being subjective, blah blah blah but really, you just have no tolerance for opinions that differ from yours unless people walk on eggshells to avoid offending your sensibilites.

I tolerate all kinds of shit, and if you paid any attention at all MDM, you would know that we have agreed on many topics during the last 8-9 years or so. Also, you have proved nothing with your assessment of my post. All you did was call me names, and then called me intolerant. Weaker than the post I responded to bro. I'm sure I've been a Slayer fan while you thought Filter were heavy as shit, so I guess you can suck on that for a while.

I don't know who you are, or what Filter is for that matter, but you missed my point entirely. No shit music is subjective. That's why it's ridiculous for you to complain about other people's opinions when you're making arguments like "Seasons is the poor man's South of Heaven". How are you not doing the same thing? You're absolutely being intolerant if you tell someone their opinion doesn't count because they've never been in a band or because you disagree. That's my only point.

No one has to justify to you why they don't think Slayer have put out a good album in 20 years, because that's their perception. If they don't like something, they don't like it.

Yeah, they have bills to pay (if you believe Kerry, they have bills that take up 90% of the proceeds!) AND don't you think they should be paid what they're worth?

If they're bringing in $1,000,000 on a tour, don't you think each member should be paid more than $25,000? (assuming they all get paid equally for tours)?

Tony and Geezer must be spineless pussies to allow Sharon to control this reunion. So Sharon controls all the shots while these guys bow to her.

Sharon controls Ozzy. No Ozzy, no reunion. It's simply, really, and the price they had to pay to reunite with Ozzy was more than 25% to Sharon, which cut Bill out. Figure probably Sharon takes 50%, and then Tony and Geezer weren't willing to split the rest evenly with Bill, who has already contributed and even been present less than anyone else.

What happens to bands when their drummer gets too old and decrepit to play?

They just cut the tempos in half when they play live like Maiden.

so whats your source? the fucking bartender?

musicians of slayer age, in a band of their caliber, do it for the money. if it wasnt for the money, they'd be playing at the pub down the street. all you working stiffs out there, im sure you work for money and not for fun.

sure, slayer are not the same monster from the 80's and early 90's, but they have done some good stuff in the past 10 years. some, like born to be wild, have been really bad. i still think theyve been riding coattails for the past 10 years, but even so there have been moments of brilliance.

so many of you shitbirds knock god hates us all. that is one solid album, far better than world painted blood. you dont have to like everything a band does. take zeppelin. tons of good stuff, but songs like hot dog suck the cock.

lol, it's hard to contradict your entire point by the end of the paragraph but ya did it. How is people 'knocking' God Hates Us All any different than you saying Hot Dog sucks the cock? There's literally no difference. No, people don't have to like everything a band does, and you certainly don't. What is it with almost everyone in this thread wanting to dictate opinions while at the same time tell other people that their opinions are worthless because they weren't stated properly?

How can you say on one hand "not everyone likes the same things", and then call people shitbirds for knocking GHuA? Do you need see a disconnect there? I can't tell you what point you're trying to make, because it's on you to be coherant when you're making it.

Everybody needs some cash but don't you need a small level of integrity?? I don't know where you draw the line but I would say it is on the other side of this crap.

In the future will we wind up with one band with twenty rotating members, each making 1K per gig?? Is that a band??

Believe me, I'm not saying that Slayer has put out GREAT albums since SitA...they haven't, although WPB came closest.

I'm just saying that every album since (with the possible exception of DiM) has had at least a few awesome songs on them. They'll probably never put out a front-to-back classic SitA again, but they're still capable of writing great thrash songs...just not enough to fill an album.

And I'm tired of the Shirley/Harris collaboration too. Actually, Shirley is just window dressing...Harris calls all the shots in the studio. Shirley is just there to placate Bruce, who insisted on a proper producer for all their albums before the reunion.

Sharon has nothing to do with it. Each member of the band has their own manager and even Tony Iommi said he wanted way to much money. Seriously dude your still on the fuck the Osbournes kick? Look your singer at OZZFEST had it coming. The eggs may have been a bit much but you know what the crowd didn't have to throw them but they did anyway and I am guessing most of them were your fans. People praise you guys for being professionals when your know where near it. All you guys did on stage was bash the tour, the bands, and according to a friend of mine who saw you on your most recent tour bash the venue because the stage was to small....Really? Fuck you and Iron Maiden.

I personally think Divine Intervention is the cut-off point. Everything after that isn't my "thing". Araya lost his bark and compensates by just yelling 95% of the time. They lack memorable riffs these days. There's a riff in Cult that harks back to Spill the Blood but that's about it.

... has definitely done business the right way, thanks to the efforts of Steve Harris and Ron Smallwood.

Hell, they even said "Why get rid of Jannick because Adrian is back? Let's have three guitarists and be able to play more parts off the records live!" when they could have easily justified getting rid of him and just divide the money five ways instead of six.

The difference between slayer and maiden financially is immense. even if a member of a band maidens size were getting less of a cut than the others, it wouldnt matter because it would still be a ridiculous amount.

The Bill ward situation is more frustrating because, while of course Sharon was involved (if only by insisting that Ozzy gets a huge % for himself), Tony and Geezer had to be very passive for allowing this to happen. Either one or both could have simply said "Make Bill happy, or im out!) neither one is replaceable...this whole "the lawyers and reps said this and that" is pathetic

There's so much bullshit and misinformation in your post, it's hard to know where to begin.

Bruce was the ONLY member of Maiden who was mouthing off about Ozzfest.

He was clearly being an egomaniacal jerk (not exactly surprising) and he needed a smack in the mouth, but the BAND and their FANS didn't deserve to have entire shows disrupted.

They fucked with Maiden's sound at the Ozzfest '05 show I saw in Hartford. How is that fair to fans who paid Sharon money specifically to see Maiden?

And it was Ozzy's roadies who egged Maiden, NOT casual fans. Explain to me how casual fans would be able to smuggle eggs into a venue.

When you are a professional musician depending of all those different sources of income you need to have the numbers right.

It's a little weird Lombardo 'got the numbers' so late in the process. He must have an accountant handling all this for him. I guess he confronted Kerry about it and the shitstorm happened.

I know I shouldn't expect consistency from butthurt Slayer fans, but I really hope that when they get served a turd on a plate at a 5 star restaurant, or have their open heart surgery absolutely butchered, they don't complain. After all, if you've never been to medical school or culinary school, you can't do better, so where do you get off having a strong opinion about something? Just because you paid money for something, consumed it, analyzed it, and weighed it against your honest preferences doesn't mean you're entitled to a negative opinion. Start a band first, gain 30 years of fame and success, and then shit on it.

and even furthermore when Adrian returned in '99 to find himself in a band with three guitarists. He couldve easily slagged off Janick Gers and said get him outta here. But that sort of nonsense would never happen in Iron Maiden cause every band member is a class act and mroe professional than any other band alive today.

I don't blame Bill for anything. He bowed out, so what? I probably would've too. First, his "mates" who he's known all his fucking life didn't seem to do a fucking thing to get Bill in the camp, they came out publicly and said "all that stuff is handled by attorneys behind closed doors" basically claiming they had nothing to do with it. That's a bunch of bullshit. All they had to do was make one or two phone calls and straightened this whole shit out. What was wrong with 25% each? I bet Ozzy wanted 40%, Tony 30% and the rest divided 60/40 of what was left between Butler and Ward. Greed is from Sharon and the fucking lawyers. BTW, NEWS FLASH.... I've seen Ozzy live.... HE'S NOT WORTH 40%.

The Slayer I loved is now gone because they have not handled very well their financial matters, they have turned into a sheer corporation that goes along with the tide, unlike the mighty Maiden. In the end, the REAL truth shows!!!!!
