ANTHRAX's Cover Version Of THIN LIZZY's 'Jailbreak' Available For Streaming - Mar. 1, 2013
"Anthems", ANTHRAX's long-awaited, eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of the band's favorite acts from the 1970s, will be released in North America on March 19 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22 in Europe (Nuclear Blast).

"Anthems" track listing

01. Anthem (RUSH cover)
02. Jailbreak (THIN LIZZY cover)
03. TNT (AC/DC cover)
04. Smokin' (BOSTON cover)
05. Big Eyes (CHEAP TRICK cover)
06. Keep On Runnin' (JOURNEY cover)
07. Crawl (album version)
08. Crawl (special remix)

ANTHRAX's cover of THIN LIZZY's "Jailbreak" can be streamed below.

Speaking to Music Radar, ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante stated about the decision to cover "Jailbreak": ""Like BOSTON, they had the twin-harmony guitars. That kind of approach influenced IRON MAIDEN, and then MAIDEN influenced us and the whole thrash metal thing. That's why I went back to THIN LIZZY and BOSTON — if it weren't for them, you might not have had IRON MAIDEN and all the bands that came after them.

"Phil Lynott is one of those people who is a god in the U.K. and Europe, but I don't know if he's fully appreciated in the rest of the world like he should be. Some artists just don't get their due.

"I don't know how you can begin to pick between THIN LIZZY songs. 'Jailbreak' is probably an obvious choice for a cover. I might have gone for something more obscure, but when I hear the lyrics to this one — 'Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak somewhere in this town' — I can't deny how cool they are."

The "Anthems" EP will be available on CD as well as digitally via iTunes and other online retailers. In addition to "Anthems"' cover art, Benante and artist Stephen Thompson have subtly redesigned each track's original album cover art to "Anthrax" it. The "Anthems" EP will first be housed in one of the "re-imagined" digipak covers, and then inserted inside the main CD cover sleeve. The main cover sleeve has been designed in such a way so fans will be able to see which one of the six "re-imagined" covers is inside.

"Anthems" was produced by ANTHRAX, Jay Ruston and Rob Caggiano and recorded for the most part throughout 2012 literally all over the world: at Benante's home studio, in Ruston's New York studio, on the band's tour bus while on last summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, in hotel rooms, and backstage at their Berlin show last December.

The Grammy-nominated ANTHRAX has just hit the road in support "Anthems" with dates in Australia, and will return to North America to headline the Metal Alliance Tour that kicks off March 22. For all of these dates, ANTHRAX is being joined by SHADOWS FALL guitarist Jon Donais.

Since I love Thin Lizzy, I was expecting this to be awful, but it's not too bad.

I love Anthrax and their previous covers for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, The Bends, No Time this Time etc have been great. The ones I have heard on this album have failed to impress me so far, but this is the best one so far and they did a pretty good job.

yawn, pretty sterile... they shoulda picked a less well known, and possibly under produced, Lizzy song - "Sha La La", "Wild One" or "Massacre".

Maybe even something of the "Thunder and Lightning" album - "Someday she is going to hit back" might have been appropriate for Charlie!!!

Mastodon's "Emerald" remains the best Thin Lizzy cover i've heard.

Yeah, they should have done "Cowboy Song." That would have been a great choice. OH, wait. They did that with John Bush already, and it kicked the shit out of this sterile version of Jailbreak. Go check it out. That was a great cover.

I have been an Anthrax fan for years and years but honestly I think their covers are redundant to say the least.

They just plug in and play someone else's song. It's what you expect from a cover band down at the local pub.. Not what you would expect from rock giants like them. C'mon, listen to Metallica's covers, they have soul, personality. In a way they take the song, and apply their stamp to it. To stay in the Lizzy neighborhood, listen to what they did with Whiskey in the Jar... that's reinterpreting someone else's song and pay tribute. If it's just about playing it the way it was on the record... just leave it be... IMHO

He's right about Phil / Thin Lizzy's importance not being recognised outside Europe - without Thin Lizzy - Metallica and Maiden wouldn't exist in the way that they did, and therefor neither would modern Metal.

Up untill this album only heard there Kiss cover, and the singers cover of Journey's song. Anthrax is solid doing this sh#t. Thin Lizzy is way under rated. Nice to see another arena band giving them respect.

I've enjoyed all of these Anthrax covers so far (Lizzy, 'DC, Rush), but they all sound SO similar to the originals that...what's the point, really?

They're all almost note-perfect replications of the originals...nothing wrong with that I guess, but I'd think an established band like Anthrax would want to put their own stamp on these songs.

Like someone else said above...a real good bar band can play note-perfect renditions of classic rock songs.

Boring , the best covers are done by bands who can put their own slant on it not replicate it exactly .

I always thought Metallica - or even Anthrax - should do a cover of KILLER ON THE LOOSE - a great Thin Lizzy song worthy of a real thrash metal treatment:

Not bad. Anthrax should of done a different Lizzy song though. Instead of the played to death & overrated Jailbreak.

Not bad but not great. I agree with all the other posts here that they should have done a less popular Lizzy tune. I also agree with the position that if any band is going to cover another band's song, they should put their own signature stamp on it. It shows that you give a damn about the song and that you want to add something to it.

If I were going to cover a Lizzy song personally, I would have to do Silver Dollar. I've always loved that track. Phil's voice, along with that boogie riff is just so feel good and out of sight!

But any way you look at it, at least they are covering some really awesome older bands and exposing them to alot of the kids today who previously haven't heard of them. And that's really cool. When I think back, I know that when Metallica released the Garage Days E.P. it turned me onto a lot of killer bands that had been around for some time but were totally fresh to my young ears.

Both this and the Anthem cover are competently done, for sure, but don't add anything that's distinctively Anthrax when compared to Got the Time or Pipeline.

Also, didn't Wishbone Ash have the twin guitarists before Thin Lizzy, while Anthrax have never really done that, instead having one rhythm guitarist and one lead.

Boring covers

They won't make me go and buy the album I already have for a second time.

Stop fucking about, write a new album.
