SLAYER's KERRY KING: TOM ARAYA 'Has Been On The Fence' About DAVE LOMBARDO For Awhile - Mar. 1, 2013
Heavy music presenter Christina Rowatt of Soundwave TV conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King on Sunday (February 24) at the Sydney stop of this year's Soundwave festival in Australia. You can now watch the chat in two parts below.

On how stand-in drummer Jon Dette is doing on the Soundwave festival tour:

Kerry: "It's amazing that yesterday was the fifth time we played — period. It was just devastating; it was awesome. He's doing really good, because if we didn't say anything and nobody was paying attention, you wouldn't know. So that means he's doing a great job… It's amazing. He was completely out of playing for awhile, he told me. And then to just be at the level of playing that he is, it's really awesome."

"Last Tuesday. I [first] hit [Dette] up [about playing with us at Soundwave]. And in the thought process, I'm thinking big picture. I''m like, 'How are we gonna get a visa for whoever goes with us?' I went, 'Alright, Jon's with ANTHRAX. Jon knows our stuff. If he couldn't do it, I don't think I could have taught it to anybody in time. So we rehearsed three times and the first show was Brisbane."

On the progress of the songwriting sessions for the new SLAYER album:

Kerry: "I've got 11 songs done. I don't know who's gonna do 'em — I don't know who's gonna produce it, I don't know who's gonna play it. I think METALLICA's got [producer Greg Fidelman] monopolized. He had February open and I was hoping to get some work done in February and then February just got too busy for us. I don't know. If he gets another window, I would like to do it between Australia and Europe in June. That would be great — just be done with it, and it could get mixed while I am out on tour and be out in September or October. That's the perfect world, so we'll see."

"Two [new songs] are done; we recorded two last year with Greg Fidelman, and they just never got mixed. The're done — there are vocals, leads; they are done. And they were gonna put 'em out before [our appearance at the Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [Festival] last year. But that never got done, so I said, 'Why waste 'em on an EP for nothing? [Let's] save them for the record.' Those two are done. The nine others I've just gotta teach whoever's gonna play 'em, and they're ready to go."

"I've been working on the new maerial a lot, and I worked on it a lot with [SLAYER drummer] Dave [Lombardo]. So I haven't decided — if we move on [without Dave] — I haven't decided if I play the new guy what we've done or just play him the guitar stuff that I made up and say, 'What do you think?' 'Cause I know what I want to be there, and I can tell him if it's going in the wrong direction. 'Nah, you've gotta play this.' I haven't even thought this far yet."

On drummer Dave Lombardo's current status with SLAYER:

Kerry: "This just happened a week ago… ten days ago… so I mean, I don't know… It's unfortunate that Dave couldn't be with us; I planned on him being here up until the Monday before I left. And then I saw trouble in paradise, and since I am the mastermind on making decisions like this, I was, like, 'Alright, I've got a backup plan. Just in case.' 'Cause I would have hated to have just Australia blown out. Can you imagine how shitty that would have been? So I did what I thought was best, and we pulled it off."

On whether he saw the dispute with Dave coming:

Kerry: "Tom [Araya, SLAYER bassist/vocalist] did. Tom's been on the fence about Dave for awhile and I was pretty much the one that said, 'Nah, I'm not comfortable moving on [without Dave].' And then it got thrust in our face and I took action immediately and I got a very lucky culmination of things that happened."

Lombardo is sitting out SLAYER's current tour due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group, while guitarist Jeff Hanneman is still recovering from necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease which he is believed to have gotten from a spider bite. Filling in for them are Dette and Gary Holt (EXODUS), respectively.

SLAYER's setlist for the Sydney show was as follows:

01. Disciple
02. Die By The Sword
03. War Ensemble
04. Chemical Warfare
05. Altar Of Sacrifice
06. Jesus Saves
07. Mandatory Suicide
08. Seasons In The Abyss
09. Dead Skin Mask
10. Angel of Death
11. South of Heaven
12. Raining Blood

Fan-filmed video footage of the entire concert can be seen below.

In an interview with Soundwave TV conducted on Saturday, SLAYER frontman Tom Araya stated about performing with Dette again: "He actually played in the band [in the late 1990s] for, like, three years. It's gonna be good. He's matured and I'm sure he's gotten much better on the drums. It'll be exciting, and I think that's just gonna pump everything up even more. I can tell you this: Jon's gonna have a lot of energy. He's known to play very fast, and he's gotten better at that."

Prior to joining SLAYER, Dette appeared on TESTAMENT's "Live At The Fillmore" album, which came out in 1995.

Dette is currently also playing with ANTHRAX as a temporary replacement for the band's longtime drummer Charlie Benante, who "is dealing with personal issues right now and can't leave" the U.S., according to ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian.

Nope....... Slayer is NOT Slayer with only 2 original members. Personally, I would not go check them out with both Jeff AND Dave missing. Besides, Dave is an important part of this band. The only reason the last couple of albums have been any good is because of the return of Lombardo.

Seriously, I cant even remember the name of the last album let alone the last time I played it. And who sits in front of their collection and says hmm... Lets put on some Slayer. Cant decide between Christ Illusion and Diabolus in Musica?

I've been a slayer fan for decades now. And as we get older, and we care more about where our money goes, man, I gotta tell you, any future Slayer, and (sadly) like Sabbath, will not see my record buying money or tour money. Like Van Halen, any kind of purity or legacy is gone. All Lombardo wanted was his cut. There is nothing wrong with wanting what you punch in the clock for, what you've earned. If payroll fuks up your check, you go to HR, get it figured out. Slayer, Sabbath, Van Halen...legends. They were legends. I don't want my Slayer without Lombardo or Hanneman, my Sabbath without Ward, and my Van Halen without Mike Anthony. There's integrity, balls, discipline, and honestly, a better overall net to keep the classic lineups. Rush without Neil? Come on. Only difference is my boys in Rush wouldn't ever, ever even think of this. Are these bands still...bands? Sure. Good bands? Sure. Are they classic Slayer, Sabbath, Van Halen, Queensryche, etc? Nope, and at their age and place in history, they would do better for themselves to eat whatever ego-centric pride they have and keep it that way.

By the way, Lombardo is the ONLY real professional in Slayer. The work he's done, the projects, the class of musicians (I know that's a dirty word on here)...you can't replace Lombardo. Lombardo is a worker, like Skolnick, a pro, a musician. Lombardo will still be in demand in 5-10 years. I can't say the same for King. Unless he patches things up with this band that has made history and was the evil soundtrack to our high school years. I love Slayer. Always have. Loud and fukin proud. But this decision is just bad.

Bring Bostaph back and get Holt on board full time, scrap anything you've already written and start afresh! That is the only way Slayer can move forward...

Actually if they got Hoglan on to play drums it could be cool.

Nope, Paul Bostaph is busy recording in some basement down in Seattle suburbs.

And to the one claiming "Lombardo is all about money, Kerry and Tom are all about the fans". Wrong.

Slayer is just a corporation, a money-maker for all of them, so I think they're all about the money...they're all 50 plus years old, nothing's wrong about it.

good point about Lombardo - He is totally PRO - a real musician, the other Slayer guys are just "dudes in a band" - they couldn't even jam with the rest of the big 4 on a Diamond Head song.

Lombardo will never be short of work if Slayer doesn't work out.

King, Hanneman & Araya will never play music again if Slayer doesn't work out.

Yeah the only Pro musician in the band cause he jammed with a few other no name bands after Slayer canned him. Big deal. Also, he admittedly had Gene Hoglan virtually ghost drumming for him on the first album cause he wasn't that good on double bass.

I'm not defending KK, but Jesus people calm down. If things with Dave were brewing between him and Tom then fine. KK said he was working with Dave on new material then it seems to me that Tom wasn't too interested. As far as the mastermind comment goes he's not saying he's the brains behind the band. Holt isn't in the band officially, Spidermann is MIA indefinitely, Dave doesn't think he's getting paid and Tom is "on the fence" with Dave and doesn't seem too concerned whether he's there or not. Somebody has to make a fucking decision. Who else is left?? That's right, KK. If Tom dodges the questions about Dave, but KK doesn't, everyone is critical about KK. KK can be a d-bag, but don't kill the messenger when it's news you won't like.

We all know slayer wrote some great riffs and songs but as musicians they pretty much suck. Dave was the one who brought them some musical credibility. He plays the drums with a "feel" that a lot of other drummers in this type of music don't have.

Kerry has always been the weakest link.

when you get drunk between the moon and new york city
the best that you can do
the best that you can do

kind of a cover album..like anthrax
showing araya's range in ballads

lombardo was in the way---he didnt want this-he thought it wasnt "metal"--

get your shit together for once.

you're not 28 anymore and you're NOT likely to take off with a new line-up where you did ten years ago when you brought lombardo back to the fold.

how about doing a undisputed attitude 2013/covers tour with a handful of classics thrown in, stuff jeff could play and just keep it in the family. yes, I know, lombardo did not play on that one but he did the god hates us all tracks as well

1. Slayer should call it quits. Their last outstanding album was Seasons In The Abyss anyway. Even Lombardo's return couldn't make up for shitty songwriting and production since then.

2. Why is Kerry King waiting for Fidelman? Every Slayer production/mix post Seasons sounds like shit, because it is missing one crucial guy, Andy Wallace.

3. Dette nailed it on that Soundwave gig, kudos to him (don't like the triggered bass drum sound though)!

4. Although Paul Bostaph is a great thrash drummer, he never really cut it in Slayer. His fast double bass technique was always sloppy and I fail to recognize his "technical" playing in Slayer that quite a few fans brag about. He was much better suited for a band like Forbidden and Testament.

5. Grip Inc. was a much better band than Slayer post Seasons, Power Of Inner Strength is up there with that last Andy Wallace mixed Slayer album.

6. Waldemar Sorychta is one of the true masterminds of the European metal scene, brilliant songwriter, producer and guitarist. I hope Dave and him will collaborate again.

7. Fuck Kerry King.

Slayer had good albums after SITA. I love GHUA and Undisputed Attitude. Paul was much better than Dave after Dave's golden years. Dave began to rest on his laurels after he left Slayer and playing those kids of fast kick snare ride beats don't cut it anymore in today's competitive metal drumming world. It sounded like he was alsleep during the last two Slayer albums.

Grip had a few good songs but overall they were mediocre and derivative.

Kerry King may be brash and egotistical but at this point he's apparently the only gung ho Slayer fan left in Slayer. Perhaps it's the other guys treating the band as an afterthought at this point? I mean Tom barely writes lyrics like he used to. Jeff is MIA and doesn't seem too concerned about his future with the band.

And Dave for crisakes, let's get over it. He's quit the band 3 times before this.

First off Lombardo left originally because Araya fucked his wife. So yeah I am sure they have some 'issues'. To SLAYER fans Lombardo is essential I know he was my favorite part of the band. Honestly there are only two drummers I would like to see back there that would not piss me off too much Tom Hunting from Exodus or Frost. Not happy with this development though Lombardo is essential, Kerry King is not.

and if dave is replaced it will certainly effect the bands business and income. Kerry and Tom will be getting a bigger piece of a steadily declining revenue

I don't understand the need for Greg Fidelman. Personally I thought WPB ( and Death Magnetic) was a very thin sounding record and the only reason it was received well was because most of the songs were ok and it was Slayer. The prospect of another record like that featuring only two of the Slayer lineup is not a good one. They need a radical production rethink and should be talking to someone like a Terry Date etc to get some depth into that sound.

as far as producing metal records is concerned. I thought WPB had a very thin brittle trebly sound that did not sound tight at all. The songs themselves were pretty good as usual but the produciton was very poor. If WPB had the production diabolis in musica had, it wouldve been great or even christ illusion which was produced well.

Nonsense.

Lombardo is obviously not the best, fastest and most technical drummer on this planet, not even in metal. He's no George Kollias, no Tomas Haake, no Marco Minnemann.

He's Dave Lombardo, period. He has a signature style, tone and groove. He's a hard hitter (he doesn't "hit like a fag", right Kerry?) A powerful player who doesn't use triggers from "todays metal drumming world" and a drummer who is still able to pull off some spectacular sounding stuff.

This guy is one of the most influential drummers of the scene and he needn't care about "competitive" drumming. Music is not a competition - a signature style is all an artist should aim at.

Do you want Nicko McBrain to introduce blast beats, swivel foot technique and 4 limb interdependence to his playing in order to be competitive in "today's metal drumming world"?

See how stupid that is?

Absolutely. The machine gun double bassers today, are fantastic. Dave has something a lot of these guys don't. Groove, insight, an ability to take the drums outside the simple (?) death metal beat. Dave's a pro. And nobody should be taking anything away from the other drummers, but they're not Dave. A Big Mac is pretty good too, but fuck, I'm a Whopper guy. And Dave is the big Whopper. He's to my tastes more than the others. And like i said, that's what I'll (we'll?) pay for in Slayer.

King practically writing the entire next album.

Tom not sure of anything.

I'm seeing the next year being the toughest of Slayers tenure.

.....Slayer?

I can't believe I just called this band Slayer. It's not Slayer, It's fragmented, it's broken, and hardly any Slayer I can recall.

I think at this point in time I'd put this band to rest until Jeff gets better and/or Dave and Kerry kiss and make up. Which I don't see happening anytime soon.

RIP Slayer.

Reading between the lines - Dave wasn't getting paid what Kerry and Tom were, as original non-quitting members, and he didn't like it. Jeff is never coming back. Even if he did, this album is all Kerry. We all know that Slayer worked best with Jeff as primary writer and Kerry filling in the blanks. Instead of another Hell, Reign, South or Seasons, we'll get World Painted Blood II.

I see a lot of people dogging Kerry. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and he is very down to earth considering the nearly 30 year legacy his band has bestowed upon us. Can't say a bad thing about him, I just wish we got the old slayer back.

Without Jeff writing and Dave drumming, except Divine Intervention, Slayer don't sound the same. They become an average to above average thrash band. With Dave and Jeff they are the best thrash band.

I know the opinion of one Slayer fan isn't that important, but if Gary Holt becomes a permanent member I won't buy another record.
I respect Gary Holt and early Exodus but I'm not interested without Hanneman being involved.

I hope Lombardo comes back because even though Bostaph was decent, he just isn't as good and doesn't fit their style nearly as well.
This next record should be their last anyway. If it does see the light of day they should use Andy Sneap.World Painted Blood was good.
