SCOTT WEILAND Says STONE TEMPLE PILOTS 'Termination' Is Publicity Stunt - Mar. 1, 2013
Singer Scott Weiland claims that STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' announcement of his "termination" from the band is nothing more than a publicity stunt in order to hype an upcoming concert tour.

Speaking to TMZ.com at the Los Angeles airport prior to the launch of his new solo tour, Weiland said: "STP is not broken up. It's a whole thing to try to boost ticket sales."

According to Scott, there the members of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS are forbidden from using the name STP on another group unless all the individual musicians are involved.

Asked if he's still fronting the band, he replied, "I started it."

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS issued a terse statement on Wednesday that simply read, "STONE TEMPLE PILOTS have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland." No further details were revealed. This is the second time that the band has parted ways with its often troubled frontman, following a split in 2002. This is also the second gig that Weiland has been dismissed from within five years, after he was given his walking papers by VELVET REVOLVER IN 2008.

The singer responded with his own statement, saying, "I learned of my supposed 'termination' from STONE TEMPLE PILOTS this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday."

Rumors that STP's relationship with Weiland was on the rocks again first surfaced late last year, after the singer hinted that he was possibly rejoining VELVET REVOLVER.

But VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash shot that down, saying that Weiland was talking about reuniting with VELVET REVOLVER because he got fired from STP."

Weiland rejoined STP right around the time of his firing from VELVET REVOLVER, with the band touring constantly for the next few years and releasing its self-titled sixth album in 2010.

That last album was recorded with the band playing together in one studio and Weiland recording his parts on his own at his own facility, but bassist Robert DeLeo told The Pulse Of Radio at the time that the band was able to make it work. "There's a certain understanding you have with each other at that point, that you know what the person is gonna like and dislike, and you know what's gonna work," he said. "And, you know, even though it is challenging, you're not in the same room, I think we've gotten to that point where it's a great achievement being able to write and produce and do this record the way we did."

As usual, Weiland's behavior on tour was unpredictable, with the singer often showing up late or going missing before shows, giving lackluster performances and even falling off a stage at one gig.

It's not clear at this point whether STP plans to carry on with a new singer. As for Weiland, he is indeed hitting the road on Friday (March 1) for a solo tour with his band THE WILDABOUTS.

The show on this trek will focus heavily on material from STP's first two efforts, "Core" and "Purple", along with other material.

I'm sure he's right about the legal shit, otherwise they would have gotten another singer and toured as STP years ago. Instead they started that band with the Filter guy. I'm sure he's "fired" for now, but when they run out of money again they'll get back together.

As someone that knows the legal system very well I agree 100% with you. Unless there are facts we don't know this is more of a Kyuss and Misfits situation instead of the Queensryche mess. It will depend on how deep are Weiland's pockets.

If it were just a "publicity stunt " you'd think he'd know about it and if he starts mentioning lawyers as far as STP obviously things are not going great with the rest of the band. Unfortunately, we're gonna be reading headlines about the ensuing legal battles or whatever this junkie and/or some guy from the band has to say about it at LEAST once a week here BM for the next few months. We'll probably getting more updates about this than we did During the whole Mike Pornoy/DT debacle. Shit... at least Mike Portnoy is not a junkie.

He did start the band and he was phenomenal every time I saw them live. I don't mean just good either. I go to a lot of concerts and Scott Weiland is one of the best performers and vocalists that I have ever seen live. He's a diva type so it's expected to have some kind of BS once in a while. The DeLeo brothers ought to know by know that they will never have the chemistry they have with Weiland with anyone else. Plus he is a proven live performer. It takes a certain breed. I've been in bands and playing shows since I was 19. It's not easy even on my pathetic level. In my defense, I have to hold a real job too. Point is, putting out albums, touring around the world, photo shoots, press releases, and all that jazz is not easy. When you find a guy who revels in that role and even finds a way to bring extra attention because of his personality and eccentric nature, you got a winner. He may seem like a loser to the naked eye, but the guy is exactly what a great rock front man should be. I think he is handling this well. Basically saying that he's giving them time to realize how stupid they are being. Their last album was great. They have great chemistry and it would suck if we didn't get another few albums out of this combination.

Geoff didn't start the band! I think the band members came in 1981 & geoff came in 1982. He wasn't founding member but Scott's case...he might win & the band will just break up. Scott will just go solo & the other bandmembers will start a "supergroup" with a new singer. Also Scott is a total drug addict....but at least he doesn't wear a vest

Weiland is great frontman and a good singer, and is unpredictable wich is lacking in frontmen and bands today.
and why always call Weiland a loser? while most of the best albums all of you own were made by drug addicts and heavy drinkers???
but it usually ends badly but their last album was very good but i wanted a heavier one. and the live dvd is great and Weiland is in great form there.

Weiland was a talent, and you make a point about many of rock's great being addicts, and that too is true, but you can't see Scott's act has run his course, why people would consider him a loser.

maybe the multiple arrests, or public spats with his wife, ending in a blaze of clothes, being kicked out of 2 bands, missing shows, just being totally unrealiable. He's not a functioning addict, he's, for lack of a better word, a loser, albeit one with lots of talent.

STP is nothing like Peal Jam, STP is much more of a good rock n'roll psychadelic band, while Pearl Jam is sometimes more of a punk rock band and sometimes a great rock band.
both bands are great. and what bands are so original today? its not like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana or any those bands were doing something completely new

sounds dated??? comapred to what??? and most of the rock bands that played on the radio today sounds like a lousy 70's bands trying to be Led Zeppelin, and the rappers and r&b crap "artists" can't barely sing or play their own songs if they are their own that is.
and who gives a shit anyway from what time period a band started or was supposed to be cool if the music is good? many bands that have been going for 30-40 years are still making great music and better then many of the new bands. but still we have great "new" bands today like Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Heavens Basement, Rival Sons, The Sword and many more
