STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Frontman Talks About Performing 'Core' And 'Purple' Songs On Upcoming Tour - Feb. 25, 2013
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS/ex-VELVET REVOLVER frontman Scott Weiland recently spoke to MLive.com about his upcoming tour and and album with his solo band THE WILDABOUTS (consisting of multi-instrumentalist Doug Grean, bassist Tommy Black, drummer Dan Thompson and guitarist Jeremy Brown).

"I'm really looking forward to it," Weiland said about the 20-city run of dates which will see him performing songs from the first two STONE TEMPLE PILOTS albums, 1992's "Core" and 1994's "Purple". "It's going to be really exciting — something completely new."

Regarding how the concept for the tour came about, Weiland said: "Well, originally, it was an idea I came up with for STP for the anniversary of 'Core' to do the 'Core' album in its entirety. The rest of the guys didn't want to do it. So, it was still something that there was a lot of public interest in. Having that said, the idea was brought up to me through management. I talked to the guys in my solo band, THE WILDABOUTS, and they were totally into it, as were the promoters. It worked out."

He added: "We're still going to do some of our space jams and have them correlate into some of our STP songs and a couple STP songs into a couple of the covers that we've done during our solo band stuff."

As for the upcoming studio CD, Weiland described it as "more of a rock 'n' roll album, as opposed to more of the sort of outside-the-box artistic sonic adventures that we've gone on in the past.

"The record that we're making, hopefully will attract more of the STP and VELVET REVOLVER fans. I think it will also help that we're doing this tour this way."

Weiland and THE WILDABOUTS have not yet secured a label deal for the upcoming album, which they are producing themselves. He says of the process: "[it] isn't hard, unless you have a group of guys like STP where every single person in the band is a producer. It's not as difficult in this situation. We're writing together. It's actually a lot easier. We're allowing everyone to put in their input and it's coming across much more as a rock 'n' roll record, but it's much more organic sounding."

Playing songs of your first two albums is something "completely new"? Sorry Scott, if you don't have the rest of the guys with you, you ain't shit.

"I talked to the guys in my solo band, THE WILDABOUTS, and they were totally into it."

What a coincidence, I stopped by McDonald's earlier and the manager told the guy in back to make me a double cheeseburger and the guy was "totally into it".

I'm not sure what to think about Core, it seems good, but I just don't really dig it. Scotts vocals are just so droning and just feels uninteresting. I really like Purple however, less heavy but I like it a lot better. So is it really true he got fired?

Rest of STP didn't want to play all of Core live? That's their best selling record.

Back in March, Dean DeLeo did a radio interview and when asked about a reissue of Core and tour, he said "“Scott and I were just talking a couple of weeks ago, and we’d really love to go out there and perform ['Core'] in its entirety.”

So, who to believe?
I'll go with the 3 other guys in the band who are stable and haven't been in and out of rehab every year. I'm betting Weiland got ousted again so he's going to trash talk the guys and make up some BS excuse for playing their music without them.

I read Scott got fired. That's why the other guys aren't "into it". Scott is/was a great talent, and one of rock's all time fuck ups.

and of course his band is totally into it. Scott needs money bad, he tried to get back into VR, no success, STP is drying up, now its this and Christmas crooning albums. I don't care to hear some other band do STP's classic albums.

Hard to take anything Scott says at face value, but the other guys don't make it easy when they only talk through Slash. I think Scott's best on his own at this point regardless if the others get a new singer or not.

Yeah, it certainly looks that way.

If Slash's claim wasn't true, Scott or STP would have released a statement IMMEDIATELY setting the record straight and declaring Slash to be a trash-talking, a-hole. But it's been total silence from the STP camp...pretty interesting.

I think Scott Weiland should do a tour with STP where they only play cuts from the DeLeo brothers band "Talk Show" and "Army of Anyone". So many hits on those records...

great! but i would rather see him play those songs with STP, and play his solo stuff while alone. but its nothing new because its playing old songs, but great songs.

Talk Show was just ok but Army of Anyone was very good.

Scott's probably lying about the other guys not wanting to do the Core tour. Not for any reason, just because he is a pathological lying puke. "So i then asked my puppets if they wanted to do it." Well Scott, they said yes, because they'd say yes if you offered to HEAVE ACID in their faces.

ps- Listen to the new Devourment song 'Heaving Acid'. Damn good stuff

Army of Anyone was kick ass. And the recent Filter output isn't bad either actually. I would love to hear the Damning Well album one day though...
