With all due respect to Jeff as a writer and an ever-pissed Heineken-drinking motherfucker, Gary has nothing to learn from him regarding guitar playing. Jeff was bitten by the spider while sitting in a bathtub drinking beer, not when he was practicing soloing on the guitar - just saying. Gary brought his own style, technique and overall approach to playing with Slayer, which was exciting to see at the beginning when we all thought Jeff's coming back sooner than later.

...no disrespect to Jeff's playing or songwriting, but it's pretty much accepted fact (not opinion) that Gary can play circles around both him and KK.

agreed. but even though hanneman's solos are sloppy and easier to play, even gary holt cannot duplicate another guitarists solos perfectly, Personally I dont think hanneman or king coiuld play any of gary holt's exodus solos, gary is way more technical and advanced than they are as an overall musician.

I watched Slayer with Pat O'Brien on guitar and he did much better job with solos that Gary Holt. And that was on his first gig with Slayer in Zagreb, Croatia.

I'd go and see them.

Man it sucks enough that Slayer has been on a downward slide over the past 10 years or more but the fact that they are tying up Gary Holt now from Exodus is just making me sick!!!!!!

The last Exodus album was the greatest thrash metal album of the past decade easily and to see it just got so little attention because he was tied up with this is just sad.

I'll admit that seeing Gary with them made it the best Slayer show I had seen in many, many years but I think it's time for Slayer to take a break, at the very least, and let Gary getting back to Exodus where he belongs.



There really is no comparison between the last 4 Exodus albums and 4 Slayer albums. Exodus is creating some of the greatest metal ever and of their career while Slayer is just phoning in unmemorable tripe to these ears. Hopefully they can rest, reunite, and take their time and create some killer music together with the original 4 and go out on top but it just seems less and less likely as time goes on.

N one wants to take anything off Dette. he got hired to remplace Lombardo and he has a lot of respect for him. I guess the only ones to blame here are Kerry and management and the way they handle the band's finances.

All this should have remained behind the curtain. Lombardo generated a shit-storm which might stain everyone including himself.

I'm disappointed that he's not saying anything about Lombardo too, but it JUST happened. He's probably a little shell-shocked about it.

And there's no guarantee Lombardo is gone for good. He said for the Australia tour, but he's had multiple fallings-out with Slayer over the years, and he's come back each time.

Don't get me wrong: it looks REAL bad, but this could still get resolved.

You ever noticed anytime there's a rift in Slayer its always 2 band members at odds with the other 2. It was always Lombardo and King being the old friends from before band formed always srticking together. Now its King and Araya at odds with hanneman and lombardo. You would never see lombardo and araya against king and hannemann cause it would be like the two Latino members at odds with the gringos.

but in these guys defense, how much money would they have lost if they had cancelled!? it's embarrasing to be out there w/o Hanneman AND Lombardo, but i'm not sure they had a choice, as they signed contracts, etc. You can't just bag at the 11th hour because you're having business and personal problems. It sucks but it IS a business.

don't get me wrong i'm NOT defending Kerry King at all, and if they don't get their house in order they should just throw in the towel, but there is a side to this that i don't see ppl talking about, and that's how f**ed Tom and Kerry would've been if they just bailed!

I can't agree that Exodus are making the best music of their careers. The first 2 Exodus albums destroy everything they've made in the last 10 years. I liked Tempo a lot but the albums since have been fairly forgettable IMO. Fast and furious for sure but the songs themselves are fairly dull. Overkill and Kreator are the best of the old school still making music today.

There's a lot of talk about this guitar player being better than that guitar player, this drummer vs that drummer, etc.

Gary Holt is a fantastic guitar player. The guys rips. Total respect. Yes, he smokes both JH & KK.

It's not about who's better. It's about who FITS.

Slayer achieved the status they currently enjoy BECAUSE of Tom, Dave, Jeff, and (sigh) Kerry.

Together, they created a unique sound that has been emulated time and time again.

It's not about disrespecting other musicians, it's about respecting the institution that the fans deserve.

People can say what they like about Jeff and Kerry's guitar playing abilities, but the fact is, their lead guitar sounds are an integral part of what makes Slayer Slayer. Their solos are chaotic and fit perfectly with Slayer's music. You could put two players who are much more technically proficient in their place, and it would suck simply because the style would not fit the music. Jeff technically, isn't an amazing guitarist, but he does (much like Kerry) have a unique sound. And guitarists with a unique sound are impossible to replicate 100% even by technically great guitar players.

Gary is a great guitar player, but his soloing style simply does not fit Slayer's sound as well as Jeff's does. Although it has to be said, even Jeff himself has been guilty of being sloppy and butchering his own solos live over the last few years. Say what you will about Kerry, but he's always been highly proficient in replicating his solos live. They always sound exactly as they did on the studio recordings. I do agree with an above poster that Pat O' Brien seemed to fit the band better when he played with Slayer for a few shows a while back. But Slayer only truly sound like Slayer, with the guitars of Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. They are both irreplaceable in that regard. Michael Romeo for example could play rings around them both, but if he played in Slayer it would just sound wrong, and probably terrible too.

I just hope this is just a temporary blip, and that Dave Lombardo will be back in Slayer soon. And hopefully also Jeff, before too much longer. If not, I fear the writing may be on the wall for the band...

I know people wanna hear the hits but they need to play some different stuff. They played aggressive perfector back in 2010 when i saw them on the tour with megadeth and anthrax and everyone acted like they didnt know the song. The situation with dave really does suck but on the other hand would anyone want to stay with their ex because thats what everyone else wants?

I know this is a festival and all but Slayer has always sort of mailed it in on their setlists. Even when they headline they barely play an hour.

they need to drop mandatory suicide dead skin mask theyre good songs but theyve been played too much kinda like sad but true and harvester of sorrow with metallica. They should play mroe ovscure songs from seasons like spirit in black hallowed point born of fire and temptation, those songs are some of their best

dette can work the double pedal pretty good, but the bass drums shouldn't be at the front of the mix. couldn't really hear much of anything else....

Not a single song that Dette hadn't played before, not a single some released after 2001. With such short notice given to Dette, I'm not surprised they skipped WPB and Hate Worldwide.

Dette is a nice guy and he's gotta be on cloud 9 playing both Anthrax and Slayer sets. This won't be forgotten by fans or ex-fans of Slayer, that's for sure.
