MACHINE HEAD Parts Ways With Bassist ADAM DUCE - Feb. 22, 2013
San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD have parted ways with bassist Adam Duce. The split is said to be "amicable," and MACHINE HEAD would like to wish Adam the best with his current and future endeavors. The band will continue on for the time being as a three-piece and has begun the writing process for the follow-up to 2011's "Unto The Locust". A late 2013 release is projected.

In a 2012 interview with Holland's FaceCulture, Duce stated about whether he felt any pressure following up 2007's "The Blackening": "I'm doing this for fun. If it doesn't work out and I don't get to make money doing this anymore, fuck it. If it's not fun, then I don't wanna do it. I don't expect to get rich doing this. I wanna have a good time and I wanna make some good music."

He continued: "I had some issues with [the writing] process [for 'Unto The Locust']. I kind of took myself out of it until it was time to write my bass lines. I wrote a bunch of music, or riffs, that Robb [Flynn, guitar/vocals] didn't have any idea what to do with vocally, and so he didn't wanna use any of that. But more importantly, I wrote lyrics that meant a lot to me and I gave it to him. I've given him page after page after page of lyrics. And it usually comes back that way, [where] he'll use a verse or a part of it or whatever — 'I'm gonna take this part and put it down here.' . . . whatever works for the cadence. But I got kind of burned on putting my soul out on a piece of paper and giving it to him and when I see it next time, there's no remnants of what the original idea was. And I was just like, 'You know what, dude?! I'm not giving you any more fucking lyrics, because I'm fucking sick of looking at this, the way that it fucking turns out.' I said, 'I'll work on it with you at the same time, but I'm not giving you any more lyrics. I'm not giving you pages of lyrics.' He was fucking angry at me for a while, but you know… that's fucking what happens."

Asked if he has ever thought about quitting the band, Adam said: "I've thought about quitting on different occasions, but I mean, Robb's thought about quitting on different occasions as well. Dave [McClain, drums] actually quit the band. I can safely say everybody's thought about quitting at one point or another."

Regarding whether he was happy with the things he could contribute to MACHINE HEAD, Adam said: "Well, I find what's important to me and where is my freedom. 'Cause that is what is important to me — the freedom aspect of it. Because making music is freedom to me. Probably [in] several different ways, because I wasn't allowed to have it while I was actually locked up. And just the freedom to go wherever you want to, the freedom to get yourself out of the way and let the music flow. [I still feel that freedom within MACHINE HEAD] with my bass lines — that's where I found it. And so when it's me and her [laughs], that's what I do here. That's my freedom."

What a crybaby. Most bassists get absolutely no input into the lyrics and vocals of a record, let alone write guitar riffs.

Dude is having some Ellefson syndrome right now. He'll be begging to come back before you know it.

All good things must end i guess. Being from Oakland & Watching this band rise from backyard parties to opening for slayer in a very short time was awesome. With that being said its not the same band anymore. People are replaceable & im sure MH will continue to write good music. So to Adam Duce, Chris Kontos, Logan Mader & i guess Rob Flynn thanks for the great memories. Machine head goes on the shelf with Slayer im done!!

exactly and Les Claypool but he's making very different music but still great music, and Nikki Sixx writes most of Motley Crue stuff and i know he's not the best bass player in the world but neither are Gezzer Butler og Steve Harres but still better then Sixx.

wished Duce would stay with Machine Head but hopefully they'll find some good replacement

I understand it, the money's not there and never has been. It's only really fun when you have some money in your pocket. As you get older you see your true friends (who are not musicians) with money in their pockets and nice flat/car. Meanwhile you are still busting your ass to sell t-shirts and barely walking away with 30k a year. Problem is you have acquired debts and responsibilities over the years and the nostalgia of touring has worn off, the wife is bitching about money and you are staring at your own receding/graying hairline, you need a knee surgery, your back is fed up and you have no health insurance. The money just is not there anymore for metal bands.

Ok, this is just bullshit. Machine Head makes fucking money. A lot more than most of his "friends who are not musicians". You're missing the point. He and Robb have not gotten along for a long time. Robb is an asshole and he's sick of it. That's why he's quitting. Nice speech though.

Also, does anyone remember that Robb and Adam had some well publicized stints in therapy a few years ago? I didn't anticipate his leaving, but it doesn't surprise me, either.

And "amicable" might just mean they're on the same page about him leaving, not that it's buddy-buddy, spreading one's wings. It could very well be "Robb, I don't want to work with you anymore." "Adam, I really don't want to work with you, either." "Well, OK, I guess we have the solution."

Sounds like he left bc he couldn't contribute to the writing enough?

Dude, you're in a band with Robb fucking Flynn!!

He's only the best metal songwriter since James Hetfield.

Truth. Maybe even better.

James doesn't do leads.

Kerry and Jeff don't sing/write vocals.

Dimebag didn't sing/write vocals.

Not saying Machine Head are "better" than any of these bands, but pretty freaking close, and Robb is the brains.

If that's the reason he left, not getting an edge writing-wise, mmk then.

I know a few years back there was conflict within the Machine Head camp. I do not personally know the band, but I see how being in a band this day in age is getting worse.

Machine Head is one of the best things to happen to Metal! Their debut is a masterpiece, and they have never disappointed me except for the song "New Resistance." I am glad they did not release the song "Needles and Pins" either.

Robb Flynn is a brilliant songwriter. They always stayed Heavy. Screw all the people who knock them for experimenting on The Burning Red, and Supercharger. The song "Blank Generation" is one of the best songs they have ever written. The title track on Supercharger is nice and Heavy as well. "Kick You When You're Down" is a bad ass number too.

So maybe Robb's, and the band's image in the video for "From This Day" were a turn off but that is one video.

As a whole, The Burning Red is a killer album. I Defy, and Exhale The Vile are far from being Nu Metal, or Rap Metal. Also, they did not incorporate those sounds into their music to follow any trend. They do it better, and Robb grew up listening to 80s, and early 90s Rap music.

As for itwalksamongus, Unto The Locust is far from a sad day. I Am Hell is Brutal. The title track is catchy, and the riffs during the verse of the song are great. "Pearls Before The Swine" is one of the best songs the band has written next to "A Nation On Fire," "Block," and "The Rage To Overcome."

Machine Head made their mark on the Metal scene. And screw Sadistik Execution. A lot of people cry. What are you the Terminator, and you have no emotions. I would like to see you write an emotionally heart felt, and depressing song like "The Burning Red." I fucking cry all the time at how lame our world has become, and the way the United States has turned out to be.

Back in the day, money was never an issue for bands to tour, or put music out. Now we get screwed on gas prices, the internet has killed the nature of collecting music (even though it is a fun way to enjoy listening to music), and people have no time to sit and enjoy an album anymore because they have to be on the go all the time.

Change is a good thing, but too much change is a recipe for disaster.

I wish Adam Duce The Best. He is a killer Bassist, and has an awesome taste in music.

Deen Dell, or Newsted would be a great replacement. Even if Machine Head called it a day in 2002, their debut album is one of the best Metal albums ever.

Geez, another great permanent band member, founding member chooses to leave his main band. 2013 is looking like shit.

Adam was not only a great bassist and co frontman of the band, but he sang great unlike many bass players. He also was a founding member and involved in the creative process until recently according to the above comments by Adam. I can see it in a way because locust was kind of mediocre and harsh to listen to...it was nothing compared to the previous two records, although it had a few good tracks.

Maybe Robb is just an egomaniac, and the stress Adam had to put up with and the dictatorship on the creative process was enough for him to say adios? Who knows the full story. I don't think it was the money, because MH is one of the few older metal bands that still sell out shows, and sell tons of merchandise. I'm sure they were pulling in a few hundred thousand per member per year. Not millionaires, but definitely comfortable with all their touring revenue.

Band disintegrating:

Anthrax

Slayer

Machine Head

Suicidal Tendencies- just heard Mike Clark is gone! and he was 50 percent of the historic lineup. All that's left is Mike Muir now. Shame.

Megadeth----only through his opening his retarded mouth, is hated by half their original fans now...they are tarnished almost beyond repair

Who's next?

Adam is a quality person and has grown exponentially over the years. MH does not define him and he'll be just fine.

Not many people in music work as hard as Adam does. He has a business, he's a pilot, he's a good Dude. Anyone who wants to bad mouth him simply doesn't even know who they're talking about.

He'll succeed in life, that's all that matters.

You make a lot of good points, and I appreciate your candor. However -

"Unto The Locust is far from a sad day."

For you - maybe. For me, it was a major disappointment after the triumphs of The Blackening and TTAOE. The first three songs are pretty killer - the album just goes south from there, IMO. And as good as those first three songs are I hear none of the stellar songwriting found on the prior two albums. I'm actually listening to Unto The Locust right now - those first three songs anyway - had the album continued with that momentum it would have been at least okay. Sadly - it did not.

" Screw all the people who knock them for experimenting on The Burning Red, and Supercharger."

So - what? Screw all the people who don't share your opinion? That's not how it works. I loved The Burning Red, but was actually angered by the POS Supercharger. Talk about losing your way. Thankfully they totally turned it back around with TTAOE.

Ever since the demise of Pantera Machine Head has been my favorite band. Hard to see how they'll reclaim their prior glory with both the loss of Duce and the downturn of ... Locust. But they've done it before so I'd opine hope is not lost.

Peace.

Still fucking amazing after 19 years.

I remember seeing Machine Head open for Napalm Death and Obituary before Burn My Eyes dropped. They set a fire under the ass of the Metal scene and never looked back.

Sad to see only Robb is left from that classic lineup. :(

Thanks for your feedback. I can be strongly opinionated, and I get frustrated with people overlooking The Burning Red, and Supercharger. I look at it as the band stayed heavy, and experimented with different sounds.

Machine Head is not just a great Metal band, but their taste in music from articles I have read over the years in various Music publications is inspiring. Also, their lyrics are socially and semi-poitically charged. The themes in their lyrics can be negative, but sadly true.

Also, that song "Only The Names" from Supercharger is amazing because they take a theme like drug addiction, and sync the mood and theme of the song into the music. That song is creepy. That's why I don't think Supercharger is that bad of an album. Also, "Blank Generation" is a great song. The build up, and the end when he snaps out is awesome.

I still love "A Nation On Fire," "The Rage To Overcome," "A Thousand Lies," "Block," "Down To None," "The Frontlines," and "Spine" from the first 2 MH albums.

Machine Head is not just influential as a band, but because they are a part of the Northern California/Bay Area music scene, they enhanced my curiosity to check out Bay Area music of past and present.

Also, Vio-Lence's music has grown on me over the years. I always liked their music, but had a hard time grasping Sean Killian's vocals at first. He is actually a decent singer. Reminds me of Nuclear Assault with a punk and Hardcore style of singing.
There are some great guitar riffs/solos on both Eternal Nightmare, and Oppressing The Masses.

I remember seeing those albums at their time of release, and wish I got more heavily into their music back in the day. It was Vio-Lence's association with Machine Head that got me to become a fan. Robb Flynn, and Phil Demmel are great guitarists.

Also, MH has some awesome photo shoots from the Bay Area. I have one from the Supercharger era where the band is standing at the North End Of The Golden Gate Bridge. It's an awesome pic.

I also like the Vio-Lence pic on Oppressing The Masses with them standing over the balcony with the Bay, and the Bay Bridge in the Background.

The junkyard picture from Eternal Nightmare is awesome too.

Machine Head is influential in a lot of ways to me. That's why I am so opinionated about them, and get bent out of shape when people knock them. Their music is bad ass.

Nikki Sixx writes most of Motley Crue stuff and i know he's not the best bass player in the world but neither are Gezzer Butler og Steve Harres but still better then Sixx.

First, learn to fucking type. Geezer Butler (not Gezzer) and Steve Harris (not Harres) are two of the best bassists in metal.

Wake the fuck up.

To me, the only downside to "Unto the Locust" was the length of the album. Maybe if Robb would have allowed some of Adam's material to be manifested into a song or two, it could have been greater?

There is always enough room on an album to throw all the members a bone or two but so often one band member takes over and you get shit like this.

However, I've always felt that Adam's back up vocals were really lacking.

By reading his few interviews, you can clearly understand why he's leaving now. Flynn is the one who pulls the strings in MH, writes most of the stuff and decides if and what the other members can contribute. He and Duce had some issues a few years ago, so he likely decided (consciously or not) to shut it out of the creative process.

to see them go for someone completely knew, proven but not a name you'd immediately know...

It's far to easy to spit out big name players, but would the loyalty be there?

Billy Baxter who's in Blitzkrieg for example....you don't know him but he'd be perfect...
