ANTHRAX's Cover Version Of AC/DC's 'TNT' Available For Streaming - Feb. 22, 2013
"Anthems", ANTHRAX's long-awaited, eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of the band's favorite acts from the 1970s, will be released in North America on March 19 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22 in Europe (Nuclear Blast).

"Anthems" track listing

01. Anthem (RUSH cover)
02. Jailbreak (THIN LIZZY cover)
03. TNT (AC/DC cover)
04. Smokin' (BOSTON cover)
05. Big Eyes (CHEAP TRICK cover)
06. Keep On Runnin' (JOURNEY cover)
07. Crawl (album version)
08. Crawl (special remix)

ANTHRAX's cover of AC/DC's "TNT" can be streamed using the SoundCloud player below.

Speaking to Music Radar, ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante stated about the decision to cover "TNT": "This was Joey's [Belladonna, vocals] track. We already had 'Whole Lotta Rosie' recorded, but he wanted 'TNT'. I can see why: his voice totally lends itself to this track.

"AC/DC is probably one of the greatest bands ever. The came in with a certain sound, and they'll end with that same exact sound. They never altered it; they just stayed true to what they were. To me, that's an honest-to-goodness rock 'n' roll band.

"It would have been obvious to pick something off of 'Highway To Hell' or 'Back In Black', and so we didn't. [laughs] I studied every Phil Rudd lick, and I did not go overboard with anything. I played exactly what he played on 'TNT'. You can't do a fast drum fill on the song — it'll stand out as being out of place. I laid it down, pulled it back, and that was that."

The "Anthems" EP will be available on CD as well as digitally via iTunes and other online retailers. In addition to "Anthems"' cover art, Benante and artist Stephen Thompson have subtly redesigned each track's original album cover art to "Anthrax" it. The "Anthems" EP will first be housed in one of the "re-imagined" digipak covers, and then inserted inside the main CD cover sleeve. The main cover sleeve has been designed in such a way so fans will be able to see which one of the six "re-imagined" covers is inside.

"Anthems" was produced by ANTHRAX, Jay Ruston and Rob Caggiano and recorded for the most part throughout 2012 literally all over the world: at Benante's home studio, in Ruston's New York studio, on the band's tour bus while on last summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, in hotel rooms, and backstage at their Berlin show last December.

The Grammy-nominated ANTHRAX has just hit the road in support "Anthems" with dates in Australia, and will return to North America to headline the Metal Alliance Tour that kicks off March 22. For all of these dates, ANTHRAX is being joined by SHADOWS FALL guitarist Jon Donais.

but poor Joey has all the sleaze and menace of Geddy Lee at a Bar Mitzvah.

and Bon's sleaze and menace made this one of the greatest heavy rock anthems ever.

Unfortunately, nothing beats the original Rush track, AND, Sacrifice already did a metal version, years ago, that is much better than yours.

This EP is just a cash grab, IMHO.

If so it's a rather pathetic cash grab - highly doubt this will sell very much.

Cover EP's or albums a cash grab?

Yeah, because so many cover albums please fans and are big sellers.....

if anything they typically polarize fans and sell poorly....

there would be no reason to do one, except for 2 that I think of, for the reason that Anthrax did this one....to pay tribute to artists that inspired you and 2, perhaps for the sake of an artistic and/or creative interpretation of another artists music!!!

Charlie must have recorded his drums 2 years ago, because he hasn't been seen since.

He emailed his drum parts, which he recorded at his home studio, to the band and was probably interviewed over the phone for his quotes on the EP.

No clue why some people are losing their shit over it; it's awful. It has none of the nuances or intricacies of the original, plus the vocal style just isn't suited for the song, no matter how much you want to try to convince yourself and others that "it's different! Different is good!"

And the guitar solo is incredibly weak.

Whatever. Cover albums in this day and age cost next to nothing. Zero time writing (obviously) and for a seasoned band like Anthrax, next to no studio time.

I could have produced, mixed and mastered this EP in Pro-Tools for about 2g's flat, in about a week and a half.

No joke. There isn't as much to it as the industry would have you believe.

Fair. I have a soft spot for old school Sacrifice. It's not the greatest, and the solo is lacking, you're right. Still, it's a lot better than the Anthrax version. Just my opinion.

You'd think Scott Ian ROSENFELD would be highly adept at shouting OY.

Too soon?

Honestly, I'm not sure what people are expecting. This is pretty much a note-perfect cover of TNT...the only thing wrong with it is it's TOO much like the original, but AC/DC is so meat-and-potatoes simple that you can't change much without destroying the original vibe.

I dig it.

Technically, there was three, Dave Evans recorded 2 songs with AC/DC before they fired him and hired Bon Scott. There were three AC/DC singers, but as far as significance goes, there is just Bon and Brian Johnson

Dude I am pulling a cash grab every day at my job.

That's the whole idea of a career. And one in the music business will require you do to things, creative things sometimes, to make money since you don't work a regular 40 hour salaried job...You fucking idiot.

It's not bad, it's just not any damn good. Same thing for the Rush track. What is the point of this? Their cover songs used to be interesting and unique. Now they're just doing run of the mill covers of fairly obvious hard rock songs. This just doesn't make any sense. I doubt there's track on here that would be worth listening to over the original. They're just killing all the momentum they had going from the last album by doing something this weak. The whole thing is a really bad idea!

Good lord, have they even heard of reverb?

They need some on Joey's voice, stat! His voice sounds completely naked and out of place, far off from the instrumentals.... like a Karaoke or something.

Yikes.

Lol, I love how riled up people get. Ok, so maybe "cash grab" is a tad strong. But still, totally uncalled for.

Neither of the covers they've released are any good, so why are they doing it?

Doesn't take a genius. Even a "fucking idiot" such as myself can figure it out.

the only good record Bush did was the sound of white noise. The other albums are too grungy alternative sounding. Funny how Im willing to bet 99% of all Anthrax fans who say 'John Bush rules hes better than Joey Belladonna' have never ever heard even one Armored Saint song.

It's OK, I won't buy it though. Not a fan of cover songs, I invariably always go back to the originals. Same thing goes for bands re-recording their old material. If it is a cash grab, so what. So many of you fuckers only download stuff for free nowadays that bands have to try and make a few extra bucks somewhere.

Covers should be done to not sound like the original artist.

Hence the best covers I have heard are Slayers. They sound like Slayer songs.
