PHILIP ANSELMO: 'I Feel Bad' For VINNIE PAUL - Feb. 16, 2013
Former PANTERA and current DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo was interviewed for the cover story in the March 2013 issue of Revolver magazine. During the in-depth chat, the singer spoke about reconnecting with Sterling Winfield, co-producer of PANTERA's 2000 album, "Reinventing The Steel". "I didn't know there was a rift between Sterling and I until I spoke with him several months ago," Anselmo said of the first time they'd talked in 12 years. "He chose sides at one point, and picked Vinnie Paul's [Abbott, former PANTERA drummer] side, which is a psychotic side."

He continued: "I feel bad for Vince. People should pity the guy. I wasn't there when Dimebag [late PANTERA guitarist and Vinnie Paul's brother, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was killed on stage while performing with DAMAGEPLAN in December 2004] was murdered, but he sure as fuck was. That's his flesh and blood, murdered right in front of him. It's a shame that Vince never reached out to Rex [Brown, former PANTERA bassist] and I. I think the healing process would have been beneficial to him, instead of his knee-jerk reaction to fear, and his therapy through tit bars and whiskey."

Returning to his story about Winfield, Anselmo explained: "He said that he drank heavily after Dimebag's death. He admitted that he hated my guts but then he got sober. Over his first two years of sobriety, he realized that these bad feelings towards me were unfounded completely."

Anselmo also reflected on PANTERA's downfall, telling Revolver: "One guy can't break up a band. After we broke up, why was Rex with me and not with Dimebag and Vince? You have to understand, it goes all four ways when a band breaks up. Yes, I made mistakes. Yes, there was a lack of communication on both sides and some of it is my fault — a lot of it is my fault."

Anselmo, whose comments in the U.K. music press about how Dimebag should be "beaten severely" were unfairly linked to some of the guitarist's shooter's motive, stated about his former bandmate: "Two mornings ago, the first thing I thought of when I woke up was Dimebag. I think about Dime a lot. Last year was very rough. I don't know what it was about last year, but I got into a severe depression about the loss of Darrell and what it meant and how huge it is. How heinous it is for him not to be here and to go out the way he did. There are still a few days to go [before the eighth anniversary of Dimebag's death] [the interview was conducted in early December 2012. — Ed.], and hopefully it's just not as bad as last year. But if it is, so be it.

"Dimebag was a lifer," Anselmo continued. "He was meant to be this guitar hero. He was born for it. We would have made amends. I would like to think he would be proud of me for pulling myself out of the muck, the abyss. I'm not a believer in the afterlife. I think this is our shot. But I guess, in an atavistic way, you hope that the fallen one's mighty spirit is looking down and smiling on you. I just choose to remember the positive things. He was almost like the perfect counterpoint to me. We may have clashed to a certain extent, but we would always find a happy medium, It was a vital relationship that I miss greatiy."

"PANTERA had an almost supernatural freakin' alchemic chemistry, not of this world," he added. "I have not felt it since. DOWN has its own chemistry, but it's not PANTERA."

Phil says that Vinnie never reached out to him, but then says he knows how Vinnie goes about grieving for his brother.

He shouldn't blurt out that Vinnie just drank and went to tit bars. Not his business at all, especially when he's not close to the guy.

Phil is the one that did an interview where he said that he hopes Dimebag would get his ass beat, right before Dime actually ended up getting shot. So you wonder why Vinnie didnt reach out to Phil? Why the fuck do you think?

Its as if Phil is comparing the help he and Rex would have provided Vinnie, compared to his drinking and hanging out at nudity bars.

He's obviously saying that help from Rex and himself would have been better, but it's not for him to say. Vinnie doesn't want to talk to either of them for obvious reasons and Phil's glossing over that.

Phil has done his fair share of running his mouth out of his ass and a lot of it at times. But today, I agree with him. It takes four to split a monster band as Pantera. I remember Vince and Dime waiting for Phil to come around. They choose not to wait any longer. They moved on.

Phil has got a valid point also. Dime meant as much to Phil as he did Vince. Phil has his right to grieve a loss of his brother as much as Vince does. Its a two way street here. Phil got his shit back together. It's just unfortunate and unfair that Dime is not around so they can come full circle again.

It's a sad story for the three remaining members of Pantera and I don't mean that in a sarcastic way. They will have to live the fact that they will never get to do what they love as a unit ever again.

stfu! look you were the strung out junkie that caused the breakup and never missed a chance to slam then every chance you got. then you would blame the press when you got called out on it. he and his brother made their decision to move on without you and Vinnie has handled his brother's death in his own way without your help. he wants nothing to do with you so get over yourself and leave the man alone. just because you want to look like the good guy now does not mean he wants to play along. if he wants to talk to you or rex he will but untill that day just shut up about it! no matter how much you want to talk about it in the press he is not going to change his mind until he wants to and if he never does then good for him. I had a good friend or so I thought until he stabbed me in the back and want nothing to do with him again ever no matter how many times he tells mutual friends he doesn't know why,he does and will have to live it because I have no intention of having anything to do with him or his slutty wife ever again.

unfortunately thats pretty much the truth no matter how many thumbs down it gets from people on here. The worse thing about it is when phil said he wants to reform Pantera and tour with a new guitarist. But even before Damageplan formed and Pantera had split up phil had said Darrell needed an severe beating and also called him Douchebag Darrell. That sure didnt help things.

Makes me think of Alice in Chains. I wanted to like their new stuff, and there's at least one song I actually did. Maybe two. But they suck now. And it's not the new singer's fault, they're just missing an integral part of what made them great.

Well, Alice in Chains are a different story altogether. Truth be told, Jerry Cantrell was always the driving force behind their music -- a fact people often overlook when praising Layne.

Not trashing Layne. I love his contributions (and Mad Season's Above was one HELL of a record) but he was never coming back to the music scene, dead or alive. AIC have the right to move on, and in my opinion, BGWTB more than justifies the band's existence.

Pantera are a different story altogether. Without Dime, it would just ring, for lack of a better term, hollow. He was truly the life of that band.

OH FUCK OFF!!!!

Anselmo is full of shit and a piece of shit!!! So sick of this douche bag running his mouth. I remember all that talk that went on between the Dime/Vinnie and Phil. Phil ran his fucking addicted mouth on and on and loved it!! It got worse and worse. Till that one day he stated Dime should be beaten to death.
I think thats what put that killer over the edge and followed those words to his own interpretation.
This world has a definite loss with Dime dead and I really do wish he were around. Such a great soul and a genuine great guy.
Too bad ONE person had to be an addict and drag "Down" one of thee best metal bands out there.
Dime's legacy will live on and his reputation is up there with one of thee best guitarists that ever lived.
Phil however will live on as one of the stupidest frontmen ever that single handily fucked up everything around him like black mould.
I hope Phil lives a long time and suffers with his actions and hopefully someday he will actually realize what a dumb cunt he is and what his actions have done.
As for Vinnie reconciliation, I cant see it ever happening and not gonna hold my breath. Phil should stop running his mouth about Vinnie and quit talking shit about him. Phil has no business talking about him at all. Hasnt he done enough to him already???

I think it's funny that people say he changed and became a better person. He hasn't change one bit. He's never taken responsibility for any of the harm he caused. He gives these vague excuses for an apology. If I fuck my best friends wife I don't say "Well if I've done anything wrong I'm sorry". That's the kind of fucking sincerity Phil has shown. Just total self serving bullshit. Anyone who thinks he's gone back to being an asshole here is a total fucking idiot. He never stopped being an asshole. And as stupid as he is, he's got a legion of fans who are even dumber!

....just an FYI, all this "brother" talk in regards to Phil and Dimebag.

Phil was a part of Dimebag's life for 13 years. From 1987 when he joined the band, until 2002 when he stopped communicating, leading to the band officially disbanding in 2003.

Dime was Vinnie's brother for 21 years before Phil Anselmo ever entered the picture. They were children that grew up together, went through their entire lives together, achieved their dreams together, and one had to watch the other lose his life to some psycho.

So, say what you want about whether Vinnie and Phil should make amends, and who is honest and who isn't, but let's stop all this crap about Dime meaning as much to Phil and he did Vinnie. That's just bull.

Rex and Vinnie certainly made their contributions, but I think that most people will agree that it was Phil and Dime that made Pantera great. I think Phil was mosty to blame for the break-up, but I think that he's done more than enough to try and patch things up with Vinnie in the last few years. I don't think that things'll ever get fixed between them. For what it's worth, Phil's "tit bars and whiskey" comment was dead-on. Vinnie needs to try and get his act together (i.e. stop selling toilets on eBay) and try and make some decent music (i.e. not Hellyeah).
At least the stuff that Phil's been putting out lately is pretty good. Hate the guy or not, you have to admit that most of his projects sound way better than "Drink.Drank.Drunk."...

What is all this "junkie" crap?

Ill never forget Vinnie trying to justify why it was okay for him and his brother to be stone cold alcoholics but not okay for Phil to be a junkie - "ones legal and ones illegal, and there's a good reason for it".

Bullshit. His brother's name was "Dimebag".

And lo and behold, Phil grew up and Vince didn't.

Phil may still be a bit nutty, but Vinnie is just a sad waste these days and it's pathetic to watch. Bad shit happens to a lot of people. It's been nearly a decade.

vinnie can never actually technically forgive him--
---
an unerasable type thing------this happens in life sometimes
---
phil is a prince==totally rich priviledged---everyone has kissed his ass like elvis for decades

so it may be hard for him to "comprehend" these types of lessons

its dark---
---
also i think this "getting over insensitivity" about death --is something that the whole world is getting over-

the tv propaganda /behavior programming of the current generation has created a "mental glitch" ---
---
vinnie is never gonna be like---"hey i wanna hang out with phil"
----
unless they find out it was somekind of anti south weird ass media assassination false flag agenda bullshit that had nothing to do with phil---but that is obviously way out---

thats just something that i kind of wonder about as a 911 truther===just a theory i kind of wonder about
----
personally i do think they were tied in with some weird agenda shit
---
whenever "far beyond driven" came out---they had phil saying shit like "i;m broken"--
like whiner kind of shit---not like the other albums

then the msm gave them a #1 album---then it seemed like they had phil seem like a "skinhead" ---but then he made a real "non racist" stand

it kind of seemed like it was some kind of msm psyop to create a new kind of non racist skinhead metaphor==media guy for mtv
----
but then they dropped pantera like a motherfucker----when they went into full communist /clinton media style in 94-95

I side with Phil on this one. We all know the dude is very outspoken and was in a bad place for a very long time, but he has came out of this whole situation a much better person. He never said he doesn't deserve a big chunk of the blame for the way things went down, and I think if Vince would just give him a chance it would really be for the best for all parties. One of them needs to man up and reach out to the other so they can get some type of closure and this whole fucking nightmare stops being brought up in every interview with either of them.

Maybe when Rex's book comes out we might get the inside truth about what really went down.

Looking forward to Philip's solo album.

I love Pantera & Down, but Phil doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. Think what you want about Vinnie, but the guy had to watch his brother get shot to death in front of him......if he isn't interested in reconciling with his former singer & bass player, who gives a shit? Vinnie should be able to move on in life however he chooses without some narcissistic blowhard giving him advice publicly in some metal magazine for teenagers.

re AIC..

new singer's great. evocative of layne without feeling like trying to be layne. brings something of his own to the table. what more to ask for? hope they keep making new music for years and years.

has a funny AIC moment related to this recently.. heard a song on the radio and:

- first though is this AIC?
- then realized it wasn't, though it did sound like whoever made it had sure heard some AIC.
- then the next part of the song sounded a lot more like AIC, but definitely wasn't, and i've got and listened to everything they've ever done.
- then, i got annoyed at the coycating.

- THEN, much to my surprise, i found myself saying to myself, "Self, this is a faqqin great song, and your just gonna have to get over this kneejerk negative reaction to it sounding like AIC. "
- then, i did. i just gave up and loved this great new song.
- then, of course, it ended and they said it was new AIC.

fun.

:)olc

Why are there so many people here that are so intolerant of others opinions? Do yourself a favor and grab a dictionary, look up the word empathy and rejoice in it.It will make you a better person for it.Phil feels the way he does,Vinnie has his own opinions on the matter and so on.As I've previously stated,I never considered Pantera to be one of my favorites, but I've always appreciated them for keeping metal valid. You've got to remember when FBD came out, metal was in a funk. When it came out,it reminded EVERYONE that metal was a force to be reckoned with. But getting back to my point, everyone grieves in their own way.A death can be a massive shock to the system. So much so that feelings and thoughts and beliefs can become a tangled mess.Give them a break while they navigate through this.Much respect and hope for the future.

Once back in the glam days with the other singer and again with Phil before they hi it big with Cowboys.

I liked them a lot better with the first guy.

Phil was a douche to the audience, spitting on them. Fortunately I was nowhere near the stage.

He had that shitty of an attitude for us I can imagine what he was like to deal with as a band mate. Complete asshole no doubt. On That Metal Show he seemed so smug I thought he was gonna bend over and smell his own farts.

He goes on and on about Darrell to this day. So many years later. He needs to suck up and move on. He fucked up and he knows it and now he needs to live with it. If someone brings Darrell up again to him he should just say "no comment".

I live down in the area of TX that Darrell grew up, never knew him but I know a few people that did. He was well liked. Which is a lot more than I can say for Phil.

I think phil should go back read the lyrics to that song and sing them over and over again, it seems like he unintentionally wrote those lyrics directly to himself

Pantera sucked before Phil joined the band. There's a reason they collectively ignored that era. That being said "power metal" was descent. Everything before was garbage. Dime was great, yeah - but jesus enough of the idol worship. He was a damned good guitarist, but he was no van halen, jimi hendrix, or uli roth. It took Phil'sfoot in all their asses to make em anything more than a shtty forgotten glam band from texas. Say what ya want but credit where it's due: Phil is the one who brought it all together ultimately. He had the heavy vision. Vinney would still be wearin that horrible fishnet around his belly if not for Phil coming along.

Phil didn't shoot Dime. End of story. He wants to run his mouth, so what? Nobody minded when his band was on top. With Phil what you see is what you get. Don't like it? Piss off and read something else.

I guess some of you can't read. "Beaten severely" and beaten to death are slightly different. If you are gonna quote a statement make sure you get it right

Phil and Rex left the band and were doing the Down II album and touring before it was even announced that Pantera were done, Vinne and Dime moved on after it was obvious that Phil and Rex had moved on. The first damageplan album wasn't released till 2004 people.

Was holding Pantera back. On top of that, he was a miserable addictive bastard to live with. They recognized it & started a new band. They didn't even jerk around in a legal dispute over the right's to the name. They started over. Phil needs to stop dropping their names too. If it wasn't for them, there'd be no reason to interview this asshole at all.

I am a huge fan of Pantera, and like Down, Damageplan, and Hellyeah as well, and I'm not hung up on any crazy idea about Pantera reforming. I just wish Vinnie would get together and have lunch with Phil, or at least make up (or be cordial) and have a conversation. You guys were like brothers at one point (I Don't take either side) but come on make peace with each other already!! Dime would want it that way!!
