Is Heavy Metal Bad for You? Or Is It a Lifesaver? - Feb. 15, 2013
Laina Dawes, author of the book "What Are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman's Life And Liberation In Heavy Metal" (Bazillion Points), was recently interviewed on the "Ontario Today" show on CBC Radio Canada. During the chat, she defended heavy metal against new research that suggests a link between the music and teens getting into trouble with the law.

The full interview is available for streaming at this location.

Featuring a foreword by Skin of SKUNK ANANSIE, "What Are You Doing Here?: A Black Woman's Life And Liberation In Heavy Metal" is available now in softcover wherever books are sold, and in eBook form via the Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple iTunes Books, and Kobo platforms.

For more information, visit www.bazillionpoints.com.

Laina Dawes is a journalist, cultural critic, and photographer. She has contributed to CBC Radio, Metal Edge, The Wire, Afrotoronto.com, and Blogher.com. An active public speaker, she has appeared at SXSW and the EMP pop music conference. She lives in Toronto, and her personal blog lives at WritingIsFighting.com.

The problem I see with Metal being blamed for social ills is the logic being applied here. By this same logic, we should be blaming Carly Rae Jepsen for turning teenage girls into call girls (for those of you who don't know, call girls are simply another form of prostitutes). Or, in the case of the gaming industry, we should be blaming that fat plumber who's got a big red M on his cap for adolescent drug use, since those games have mushrooms in them. I mean, anyone remember Columbine? I still remember that one like it was yesterday, and it was a scapegoat-fest of the highest order. The most notable scapegoat for that was Marilyn Manson, and that ultimately fell apart once it was revealed that Klebold and Harris didn't even like Manson (according to Manson's own admission, they thought he was a "sell-out"), and ultimately exposed the media's motives for what they really were; maximizing paper sales, TV ratings, and web traffic. What was sadder than the lives lost that day was the fact that the media's tactics to lure in the sheep worked. It is evident to me that we as a society still haven't learned jack shit from what the media pulled off in the aftermath of Columbine. Scapegoats are STILL being used to blame society's ills on, even in the aftermath of unspeakable tragedies.

27 years old now...got into bigger and better things as time went on and I researched more...but I have to say as a teen who was struggling in the late 90s/early 00s, nu-metal did indeed save my life. For that, no matter how much quantifiably "better" metal I've discovered since, it will always hold a place in my heart.

The example of Dave Mustaine proves that, at the very least, metal is better for your sanity than religion...

Then again, he also proves that heroin is better for your brain than religion...

I'm not seeing the communist angle there. Looks fascist to me. Homeless people don't have $100, much less $10,000, to pay such a fine. So then they get thrown in prison when they can't come up with the $10,000? If they had that much money they wouldn't be living on the street.

Okay Let's get serious:

Heavy Metal did indeed save my life as it did for many others, I've noticed that many smart persons that I've met had a connection to extreme music that had thought provoking lyrics and intelligent structures. (I'm thinking about Chuck Schuldiner here, Sabbath, Maiden, early Opeth etc...)

Many Heavy Metal fans are open to other intelresting genres like jazz fusion, IDM and ambient (like I do)

Eary Metal music was spontaneous, raw and angry and it helped many get through hard times, however, there's this wave of cheesy cliché goth emo suicide bullshit that went mainstream in the early 00's

I believe that music is the highest form of art ever created and that without it, life would be a mistake!

Long Live Heavy Metal!

Well - sometimes metal can be bad for your health. I mean, after headbanging all night long, I would usually feel pretty fucked up. Of course, drinking many, many beers might have contributed to that.

1) Every time a disaster happens, the media runs to public enemy #1 of the moment. In the 80's it was metal. In the 90's it was Goth. Today it's Video Games.

2) Metal is just an art form and never saved my life from anything, but it provided an outlet that made my teen years easier to get through and provides enjoyment today. I would be worried for someone who depended on a form of entertainment for deeper fulfillment.

people are just judging metal musicians because of their looks and the music is heavy and loud, and they havent realy read the lyrics to most bands and/or talked with some of the bands. most metal guys look angry and bad when they are actually good. why dont they blame crappy rappers for todays youth??? or the big companys for paying radios and advertise that medocrity and no talent is great. most of the bands that are on top of charts today can barely play or even sing without using autotunes and pro-tools.

but we at least still have many bands that are doing fine without selling millions

lyrics on Overkill's "Killbox 13" record helped me quit using cocaine in '04 and an interview with Philip H. Anselmo helped me quit painkillers in '09. I always have and always will love metal and I'm no Spring chicken. Oh, and Superjoint's "Destruction of a Person" helped me realize I was killing myself and Metallica's "That Was Just Your Life." Hell, I could go on and on. So, yes, metal DID save my life - too many times to count!

Art can kill or save you. It,s all a matter pf perception and perspective. People letting something killing them are either too much into it and get swallowed by the whole thing or are retarded and deserve what they've been chasing. Art (and creativity) should enlighten you, even if you are dealing with very obscure topics.

music has saved my ass many a time. although i play super extreme music, i love and listen to all kinds of shit. if its moves me, then i like it. when someone is doing something from the heart and not from the wallet, you can usually tell and its 100x better than cookie cutter garbage, whether it be grind, death, country, rap or otherwise.

Religion is far more damaging to children than any kind of music. The argument is that heavy metal makes kids rebel, which is basic adolescent behavior anyway, and if you want to get technical, religion, just like any form of oppresion, naturally leads to rebellion from a psychological standpoint. What is worse, allowing kids to listen to music and judge for themselves what they like, or forcing them to believe in something which has no evidence to support it? I'll take dark reality over delusion any day. Reality is dark, but at least it's real.
