...awesome, overlooked album in the Dio catalogue, I got it as a new release on vinyl and have dug it ever since.

Track 6 Overlove begins with a really cool sounding guitar riff, one of Dio's heaviest and best songs. People talk about last in line and holy diver, dream evil is up there with those for sure.

So basically this is Dream Evil + the already released Live at Donington '87, with an EP track and a single edit.

OK then.

Why dont they put it in a leather box or metal can really make it a rip off!!
I have Hide in The rainbow on 7inch which is only thing of any rarity on the bonus disc.
A full live cd of Donington would be better,a DVD the ultimate.Otherwise stop milking a dead legend.

Not after the way the first three were mishandled. I'm sorry, but when there are audible dropouts on one channel or the other all over the fucking place, I'm out.

Thankfully I downloaded them to check it out and discovered the dropouts and quickly deleted them and went back to the original CD's. I don't know why people bitch about how they sound. People must have muddy or dull systems.

You aren't doing yourself a favor taking an old CD with a shitload of headroom and turning it into an Mp3 because it loses way too much treble.

All that aside, they sound like they were mastered to sound good as MP3's not as FLAC or CD's, so fuck that.

I sincerely hope the old Warner/Polydor versions are still around on the cheap for people trying to get into Dio and end up seeing those in the bargain bin at best buy (that's not a knock, most old CD's are 5 bucks new these days...Rush..Deep Purple...ect.)

Thank god for downloading. I would be pissed if I had to replace a CD only to find out the one I'm used to and think sounds better is way overpriced in the used market like those fantastic Sony Mastersound Ozzy CD's that were cheap and everywhere in 1995.

This is a really great album, already own this on CD as well as Holy Diver. I did buy the double disc remaster of Sacred Heart since I didn't already have it.

Will most likely download the second disc, sorry, I love Dio and will support him but I've already brought the album once.

Re: Dropouts...

If people are old enough to remember tapes, they know this happens with tape. Uneven wear on one channel means that Dio's voice waffles between dead center and leaning into one of the channels. It's in a LOT of albums and is not hugely noticeable on speakers. When you break out the headphones with good high frequency response, it's pretty obvious. It happens because the tape is not in good shape and it doesn't read both channels equally due to the distance of the tape to the read head. Misaligned tape heads can be blamed too, but i don't think that's it because most realign the tape heads for every song these days.

It makes the sound off-balance and introduces timing errors between the tracks. While not a dead mute, it's still a dropout as far as I'm concerned. It sounds like one channel was compressed heavier than the other one. Again you probably aren't going to hear this in a semi-mono situation with a lot of bass energy filling the room and the highs not hitting your ears at the same time with speakers.

My point is that none of this was on the old cd's and it shows the mastering engineer didn't care enough to notice or bother fixing it, baking the tapes or whatever would have to happen to correct it. It says to me immediately, "half assed"

I don't remember specific times because it was pretty damn quick. I listened to a handful of songs and the vocals were off to one side a lot more, then they would drift back to the center and it was unsettling. After checking the old version to verify it wasn't in the mix, I deleted them. I seem to remember it was basically everywhere I listened.

I suggest running some tracks through audacity and applying a really heavy compressor and it should be more obvious sounding that way if you haven't noticed it before.

might be my favorite Dio song, I'd love to hear a modern band do a cover of that, really put some groove into it. Great, great song, I don't think he ever played it that much!?

If you ask me his 2nd best album in Dio, that's right better than the Last in Line. Love almost all the songs on it. 'All The Fools Sailed Away' is a classic. Sunset Superman baby!!

Have the original CD & vinyl of it, plus hide in the rainbow single, and the live Castle Donington - 22/08/87 which was released on double CD a few years ago.

Gonna pass on this, and wait for a deluxe edition of Strange Highways. That is Ronnie's most evilest , darkest , heaviest solo album IMO.

I've got Japanese RE-masters of DIO's 1st 3 albums, so I'll have to pass too. I thought that Simon Wright was drumming on the 'Angry Machines' album??

Anyways, I'll stick with my 2nd purchase of these 3 fine albums!

Hide in the Rainbow was included in the Sacred Heart Deluxe edition, and this looks like the live at donnignton show. So what's the reason to get this?

There's no live gigs from this tour in the archives? I don't buy that at all. That would make this worth buying not an extra disc of stuff we all own already.

I love this album. And most of all I love the song "Sunset Superman". But to this day, I still think that title is really stupid.

I always felt it was miles better than Sacred Heart, better than Last In Line and more consistent than Holy Diver. Dream Evil was Ronnie's most musical album since his Rainbow days. The songs are gothic, heavy with lots of movement. Gaining Goldy was a positive, giving the band a much needed shot of freshness that was lacking on the Sacred Heart album. All The Fools Sailed Away has always been my favorite, such passion and the guitar solo and ending is breath taking.

But this new 2-CD deluxe edition seems lazy, all it is - is Live at Donington '87. How about releasing that Dream Evil Headbanger's Ball Special on dvd instead. I already have 24 bit Hard & Heavy edition, which is amazing. Better mix and very clean sounding.
