BLACK SABBATH In The Studio: Behind-The-Scenes Video Released - Feb. 13, 2013
Legendary heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH will release its much-anticipated new album, "13", in June via Vertigo/Universal Republic in the U.S. and Vertigo in all other territories. The drum tracks on the group's first LP with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978 were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion.

Osbourne, Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "God Is Dead", "End Of The Beginning" and "Age Of Reason", the latter two of which stretch out to as long as eight minutes.

A three-minute behind-the-scenes video from the "13" recording sessions can be seen below.

"I wanted to make an album that stood alongside their first four albums," Rubin tells RollingStone.com. "The first album wasn't a straightforward heavy metal record. You could hear the jazz influence, so that was the goal, and to capture that live interaction."

Ward in May 2012 announced again that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of the new album, due to a contractual dispute. After SABBATH shot down Rubin's suggestion to replace Ward with Ginger Baker (CREAM) ("I thought, 'Bloody hell?'" Iommi tells the magazine. "I just couldn't see that."), Rick suggested Wilk.

Iommi tells RollingStone.com that Ward's demands came out of the blue. "I didn't know Bill was having these issues when we got together — he never even mentioned it to us," he says. "It was quite confusing. We wanted him involved, but it was just getting too hard." Adds Osbourne: "You can't go, 'Well, I don't like it.' You get off your ass and get your shit together. The life of a bohemian rock star is fucking long over."

Iommi was diagnosed with cancer at the end of 2011, and his treatments forced BLACK SABBATH to cancel all but three tour dates in 2012 after announcing their reunion in November 2011.

"Things are fairly good, dare I say, at the moment," Iommi tells RollingStone.com. "I'm still here and it's okay. We had to do this album now. Christ, if it happened in another 10 years, I don't know if we'd be around."

Osbourne, who describes the new SABBATH album as "Satanic blues," also spoke about one of the band's new tracks, the provocatively titled "God Is Dead". "It starts off, 'God is dead,'" Osbourne says, "but at the end it says, 'I don't believe that God is dead.'"

Funny, if Heaven & Hell had stuck with the Sabbath name, no one would have had a problem with Vinny sitting in for Ward. What gives?

Odd seeing Tony without the hair. Whatever. It'll be the playing that matters. I still remember the day I purchased Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the hours I'd spend playing that record over and over.

That said, I'm not expecting a great Sabbath record. I just hope it isn't dreadful. Rick Rubin's involvement doesn't inspire confidence for me...

Ozzy says at the end of the video that it is the most important album of his career. Still a real team player I see.... but he's right. His vocals will make or break this record because you know Iommi & Butler will deliver the goods no matter what. It's Ozzy's performance that will either shine or be wrecked by extensive overdubs with auto-tune and too much chorus. We shall see. I'm excited for this either way. I do wish Ward was involved in some capacity though.

Yeah man I'm really hopin his vocal tracks aren't all over-produced like they are in most of his solo career. I mean I don't really think the studio effects he uses are all that bad (it could be way worse), but it won't sound right with Sabbath. I just can't see that.

... Rick Rubin has gotten so lazy in his old age. Seems all he ever does is tell artists "Try to sound like your old stuff" and then naps on the couch while Fidelman or whoever is engineering does all the work.

That said, very happy that Iommi is back!

The funny thing is you're right. A lot of the more recent artists Rick Rubin has worked with have all claimed that most of the time he shows up for about 10 minutes and leaves or when he's actually around he just lays on the couch.

I mean this is a guy who used to have a good ear and he was responsible for helping a lot of bands evolve into something more powerful than they originally were. Just take the movie Funky Monks for example, I think Blood Sugar Sex Magik wouldn't have been the masterpiece it was had it not been for Rick Rubin.

But Rick Rubin has since lost his integrity, and we now have albums like Stadium Arcadium.

Yeah but Linkin Park was always awful, they didn't need Rick Rubin to ruin their sound, they already did that by being straight up nerd metal.

To me the Chili Peppers were atleast cool at one point in time, which they no longer are. That's why I went with Stadium Arcadium. It's an album with like 50 fuckin songs on it and not one of em was good.

Still find it really strange they settled on Brad Wilk. Don't get me wrong I dig Rage Against The Machine and his metallic hip-hop style drumming stands out to me, but that's one of the reasons why I'm confused that they settled on him. His style doesn't fit. I'm thinkin it was suggested by Rick Rubin seeing as how he worked on the Renegades album and produced Audioslave as well.

But all in all, I think Brad Wilk's a good drummer so I'm thinkin it'll work out. But again, if it was Bill Ward then I wouldn't even be sittin here questioning the album's potential.

I think Wilk makes great sense. Listen to Evil Empire. Very retro/70's feel on some of those songs because of Wilk's drumming. Really not too far off from what Ward was doing on songs like Behind the Wall of Sleep and The Wizard. And from the brief clips, it looks like Wilk is bringing tons of energy. I like it. Plus, it means no Tommy Clitoris.

Tony looks healthier than he did last year...he's put some weight back on. It's very jarring to see him without hair, but I know he'll win this fight.

I don't give a fuck about Rubin's involvement - it is not like he is an actual hands-on participant. The real question everyone should be asking is this: who will the engineer be on this record?

If it is Fidelman, we can only hope the backlash against his atrocious mix on Death Magnetic has seen to the guy rethinking his approach.

However it goes, I am just hoping for one last, glorious blast of heavy sounds from BlackfuckingSabbath!

It was just sad to see this without Bill Ward there. I had such high hopes with the whole worldwide 11-11-11 announcement for all 4 but this just comes off as "just another" lineup for Sabbath to me.

Whatever comes out at least it will be a better fitting end to Sabbath than that horrendous Forbidden album!!!!

Iommi likes it and thats good enough for me to be pumped for this release. So if this album is just decent it will sell from grandpa's to kids just discovering them. It's to bad about Ward not being on the drum kit. Mr.Wilk is the luckest MFing drummer in metal at the moment.

Really glad to see the Bill Ward comments seem to be dying down.

They all went in to this thinking it would be a reunion of the original line up, then went ahead and announced it before the contracts were signed it seems. That seems to be the only screw up.

And just look at the history of Sabbath, Tony Iommi IS Black Sabbath. As long as he and Geezer are there I'm cool with it!

Looking forward to the new Sabbath album, not expecting something like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (which would be awesome) but any new music from Sabbath will be great to hear! \m/

I don't think they should have released this video. It's like all, whoa! The mighty Black Sabbath, the songs, the history, then they show them in the studio and there's this guy drumming who had nothing to do with any of it! It kind of kills the mood you know? I don't know. I hope it's a good album. I guess Rick Rubin is using classic Sabbath albums as a template for how he's going to produce it. Anyway...we'll see....we'll see. God I hope it's good!

Why are they trying to fool us with dying their hair? Does image matter that much for a band like Black Sabbath? We all know they're no longer 25! When will older rock guys learn to let the hair go and that music is all that matters?

The guys knew that people would buy Black Sabbath with or without Ward, that was the leverage they used against him when it came to compensation, and judging by the attitude of most of the posters on here, they were right on the money, no pun intended.

Maybe the reason Bill Ward isn't with them is that he can't keep up with his playing. He is an old guy, no disrespect, but playing in Sabbath is not an easy gig. Especially if they plan on touring. Slowing down and not being able to do what you once did comes with age and will happen to all of us. BTW, I can't wait for the new record!
