DEMON HUNTER: 'We Have No Specific Knowledge Of Our Music Being Used' To Torture Prisoners - Feb. 12, 2013
Seattle-based Christian metallers DEMON HUNTER (pictured below) have commented on a new article in Esquire magazine about the raid on Osama Bin Laden in which the Navy SEAL who killed the Al Qaeda leader mentions that he wore a DEMON HUNTER patch during the mission. The SEAL, who is only referred to as "the Shooter" in the article, also reveals that he used the music of METALLICA on prisoners before interrogations — until the band asked them to stop.

The Shooter explained, "When we first started the war in Iraq, we were using METALLICA music to soften people up before we interrogated them. METALLICA got wind of this and they said, 'Hey, please don't use our music because we don't want to promote violence.' I thought, 'Dude, you have an album called 'Kill 'Em All'.'"

He added, "We stopped using their music, and then a band called DEMON HUNTER got in touch and said, 'We're all about promoting what you do.' They sent us CDs and patches. I wore my DEMON HUNTER patch on every mission. I wore it when I blasted Bin Laden."

"The Shooter" insisted that he did not torture prisoners, but that "repetitive questioning and leveraging fear was as aggressive as he'd go."

Earlier today (Tuesday, February 12), DEMON HUNTER released the following statement regarding the Esquire article:

"As you can imagine, our inboxes and phones (and those of our representatives) have been flooded with messages asking us how we feel about the Esquire article on the raid that brought Osama Bin Laden to justice that began circulating yesterday. Specifically, the person identified in the story as 'The Shooter' said that Seal Team 6 wore the DEMON HUNTER emblem on their uniforms and 'I wore it when I blasted Bin Laden.'

"Over the years, we have been overwhelmed by the personal (and unofficial) emails and letters we've received from members of the U.S. military. We have been humbled and honored by the troops who've told us our music has offered them some comfort while overseas, while missing loved ones, while doing what they do best in order to keep America safe and protect the freedoms we enjoy. We've met many servicemen and women at our shows and they've shared their stories with us in person, as well. We wrote 'The Soldier's Song' back in 2005 to pay tribute to these folks who've reached out to us. We included one such veteran among the DEMON HUNTER fans we profiled in our documentary film, '45 Days'.

"We have seen our symbol, a demon skull with a bullet hole in its forehead, tattooed on fans around the world. We've seen it made into sculptures, painted onto motorcycles, even spray-painted onto tanks and military planes. We often post these pictures on our Facebook page when we receive them. One such email, a few years ago, came from a special operations team who had crafted homemade DEMON HUNTER patches and put them on their uniforms. They asked us if it was OK if they did this and we of course told them 'YES,' because we are unapologetic supporters of our troops. In the last 24 hours, we have come to believe this team who contacted us a few years ago must have been Seal Team 6.

"As for the talk about enhanced interrogation techniques that has sprung up in the media in the last 24 hours surrounding this story, we feel that it is an unnecessary distraction. It's been widely reported for years that heavy metal music has sometimes been used in these situations. We have no specific knowledge of our music being used for this, nor have we ever volunteered it to be used as such, nor are we commenting on it beyond that. The debate about enhanced interrogation techniques is for politicians, military intelligence, pundits and others of the like to have.

"The members of Seal Team 6 and The Shooter are American heroes who deserve our support. We were among the Americans and people around the world abroad who supported the bringing to justice of one of the biggest mass murderers in history, who planned and executed some of the most horrific acts imaginable. All of the military who risk their lives to protect our freedoms earn our respect each and every single day. We are honored, humbled and blessed that DEMON HUNTER was of any support or comfort to Seal Team 6 or anyone in the U.S. military at any time."

In a 2009 appearance on MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show", METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said that the band did not "advocate or condone" the use of the band's music for torture, adding that if someone really wanted to use music to torture others, there were groups that were far more extreme: "If there are people that are dumb enough to use METALLICA to interrogate prisoners, you're forgetting about all the music that's to the left of us. I can name, you know, 30 Norwegian death metal bands that would make METALLICA sound like SIMON AND GARFUNKEL."

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was asked by a German TV network in 2008 how he felt about the band's music being used to torture prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He replied, "Part of me is proud is because they chose METALLICA . . . And then part of me is kind of bummed about it that people worry about us being attached to some political statement because of that."

War Crimes? Like making terrorists listen to metal?! Don't be so sensitive, I'm sure they could handle it. Nice of you to care though.

I love how "enhanced interrogation" is up for politicians to debate, yet the figurehead of the religion they're supposedly about flat denounces torture, violence, and retribution. It's funny that Christian "metal" bands have no problem commenting on other social issues, but when it comes actually being Christlike, they know they'd upset their fanbase by taking a stand against shit like this, and they know they'd have to admit to their hypocrisy.

Christians in metal bands are just fine, but when you're in a so called "Christian metal band", you're a joke.

So whan christians don't live up to the gold standard they're hypocrites, when they do they're bible thumping bigots & fascists. Make up your fucking minds what you want people. Would anyone be berating them as hypocrites if they'd come out & said they supported gay marriage or are you all somehow allowed to pick & choose what parts of the christian faith they're allowed to follow?

I never said any of those things, so who's generalizing who? Context matters. For example, in the context of going against literally what your entire religion stands for you, the thing which supposedly sets your faith aside, yes, you're a hypocrite. I don't understand why you would think there's a lot of wiggle room about violence, murder, and retribution and what Jesus stood for as a person, messiah, and figure head.

Am I going to say any random Christian is that hypocritial for other situations? I'm not telling anyone what they should or not be following, and that's where the irony and hypocrisy lies. I don't care what you (you as in religious people) believe, but if you're okay with completely disregard the major tenant of your religion, something's up. It's a little fucked up to be a Christian metal band and be okay with toture. Nice strawmen though.

What the fuck are you on about? How are they being un-Christlike? Coz they support the justice of bringing down a mass murderer? Coz they had nothing to do with what went on but support those serving in the USA military? What is hypocritical about what they said? Nothing.

Just coz a young girl wears a tshirt with your businesses logo to a Britney Spears concert, doesn't mean you're automatically a Britney Spears fan and know all the words to the songs.

Although you probably do.

I'm not sure if you follow the Bible, but if you have to ask me how supporting killing anyone is un-Christlike, I'm not sure I'm the one who can explain it to you. I have no problem at all with bringing down a mass murderer, but it's just funny that people who claim to follow Christ do things that are the complete polar opposite of literally everything he stood for. Everything. Consider the stupidity of your question until the answer is self evident.

I don't have a problem with killing terrorists, but then again, I don't claim to follow a religion that I lack the integrity to uphold. Killing for Jesus is like making money for Jesus; you can support 'enhanced interrogation' but don't act like you're also repping your faith at the same time.

As far as the Britney Spears comment, and the One Dollar Man thing, I'd say simple insults for simple people.

What a nice way to excuse the use of and paraphrase 'torture'. Where exactly would you draw the line, "Christian" douchebags? Waterboarding? Pulling out fingernails?

The US should take the high road and condone the use of torture, instead of reducing itself to be like one of those barbaric medieval tyrrannies in the Middle East. Be better than that, not like them.

FUnny also how these war-mongering, bloodthirsty, chickenhawk chickenshit self-appointed 'Christians' are always the first to scream out for blood, revenge and warfare - but Hey, that's the right wing way for ya :-)

Torture? These terrorists torture (terrorize) people all the time. You think they really are tortured by listening to a metal CD? These are people who cut Daniel Pearl's head off, they obviously have a very high threshold of torture. Religist crybaby.

How was Bin Laden brought to justice? Justice would mean he was tried before a jury of his peers. He was (if he didn't actually die in a cave in Afghanistan) killed so he couldn't show the world that he wasn't involved in 9/11, that in fact it really was the CIA/Mossad. Remember Hussien? He brought all of America's dirty laundry into the public (not that the mainstream media reported any of it) and the US has since decided to just murder it's enemies. Washington DC should be nuked. Might as well include the Pentagon, UN, World Bank while we're at it. I like Americans and America but fuck US imperialism.

"The debate about enhanced interrogation techniques is for politicians, military intelligence, pundits and others of the like to have"

What a fucking ridiculous attitude! Is America supposedly a democracy? The answer to this question is "yes". What this means is that "enhanced interrogation techniques" (a euphemism for torture) are being conducted in the name of US citizens.

Accordingly, this is NOT a debate to be handled "from above", this is a debate about what America stands for and it is a debate that ALL US citizens should be engaged in. For Demon Hunter to devolve this to the upper echelons of power says a lot about this band and the unbridled stupidity and apathy they strand for.

America is engaged in torture and Demon Hunter openly admits to standing idly by as this atrocity transpires.

However, bummer for the military, because:

A) Demon Hunter isn't scary in the slightest.

B) Nothing on earth would be as auditorially torturous as having to list to "St. Anger" or "Lulu" on repeat.
