DEF LEPPARD Celebrates 30th Anniversary Of 'Pyromania' On 'In The Studio' (Audio) - Feb. 12, 2013
North American syndicated rock radio show "In The Studio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands" celebrates the 30th anniversary of DEF LEPPARD's 10-times-platinum album "Pyromania" with lead singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage and guitarist Phil Collen.

The birth of MTV would definitely aid in fueling the success of DEF LEPPARD's third album, which lit the fuse for the pop metal bands so successful throughout the remainder of the decade, but as Elliott reveals to "In The Studio" host Redbeard, it was a challenge throughout the recording sessions to ignite those soon-to-be anthemic songs.

"About halfway through the 'Pyromania' album, I first noticed that it was getting difficult to create something that was as good as the top-notch artists," he said. "We weren't that little band from Sheffield anymore, we had to be better and bigger than BOSTON, FOREIGNER… you name it."

The DEF LEPPARD "Pyromania" "In The Studio" interview is available now to stream using the audio player below.

In a recent online post, Elliott commented on "Pyromania"'s 30th anniversary: "Wow... I can't believe it's 30 years since 'Pyromania' came out! It had been a labor of love to make (little did we know in comparison to 'Hysteria', it was a piece of cake!). Multiple studios in London, one guitarist out, one guitarist in, equipment breakdowns, tapes turning transparent because of the thousands of times they were rewound and fast forwarded for multiple overdubs, but we found our sound on this record with the help of a great producer in Mutt Lange, the new studio technology that we eagerly embraced (unlike many of our peers) and an incredible enthusiasm to 'make a record no one else had ever made. Whether we did or didn't isn't important. What is, is that we had made the record WE wanted to make, it had been percolating in our DNA for six years! We finally sounded like the 'us' we wanted to be!!!"

less...Def Leppard is a lame rock band that made too much money. They suck live and I don't get it why they sold that much albums.

...you "couldn't care less", yet you clicked on the story & then posted a comment. Based on the second line of your post, it's obvious to everyone exactly why you "don't get it".

Love how they wrote Pete out of their history and this album and not to mention, Phil even pretends he played on this album when he's asked about it.

Pete has all his songwriting credits on the album, and got all his royalties off it. He's even said in interviews that he made more money off Pyromania than he made his entire active time with the band. Phil played a lot of solos on the record, including Pyromania and Stagefright. But hey, don't let the truth get in the way of the bashing!

I remember when I was in 2nd grade, I brought this LP to show & tell. I got in a lot of trouble for it. 7 year old boy + pyromania made teachers VERY nervous. Teacher took it away and called my parents.

The good ol days

Pyromania has THE worst, most dated snare sound in recorded history. Rick Allen couldn't play the parts in the studio, so Lange ran sequencers instead. Bonzo and Peart didn't use no damn sequencers...

You were some of the first people experimenting with sampled drums. On Hysteria those huge drums were all samples, played in a Fairlight.

Lots of people didn't know that. They were always asking me how I miked up such great drums! Pyromania was done the same way, on cheesy 8-bit Fairlight technology where we had to figure out how to record everything at half speed into the Fairlight to make it sound like it had some tone to it, and we'd be stacking up a bunch of snares and bass drums.

I remember at the beginning of Pyromania there was no idea of how we were going to do the drums. All Mutt was saying was that we'd have to figure out some way to do the drums in the end. The drums would be one of the last things to get done, so it was, "Wonder how we're gonna do them. I'm sure we'll figure out something."

A very simple drumbeat would go down at the beginning, but at the time, there wasn't any way of locking multitracks up with drum machines. There was no way to sync the Fairlights up to SMPTE. So we had to figure out how to do that because we had to be able to change the parts. You could put a drum machine part down and work to it, but there was just that Linn drum code, and it didn't run anything but itself, so we had to figure out, with the help of some pretty smart technical people, how to get a system together to sync to tape.

The main reason the drums were done that way was because, at that point, the songs and the arrangements would be changing all the time. If you had a performance and Mutt and the band decided to rewrite the chorus, whatever the guy had been playing became irrelevant. So the best way was for them to keep working on the songs, rearranging them and changing them all the time, and then to worry about what the drums should do afterwards.

Anybody that bags on this classic release is a complete fool. It's not always about trying to heavy as hell you know. The Production alone is a wonder not to mention the song quality.

Wonginfo,

Pyromania isn't even a song on the album. But this is one of my favorite albums and whoever passes it up just because its an album by Def Leppard is missing out. 'Comin' Under Fire' is one of their best songs.

Hysteria is good once in a while, but those 1st 3 albums are CLASSICS, not to be missed. Been a while, for me, I think I'll dial them up tomorrow night! Rock On!

btw, they're awesome live, saw them in '06 Hershey Park, PA.

Loved it, more as time went on. Journey with Steve Augeri ruled the sunset, that awesome night!

I cannot understand for the life of me when one of these blabbermouth readers gets upset over a band trying to sustain the ability to feed their families by any means possible. I mean, would any of you go to work for free? Every single person who posts anything neg about these bands, when it comes to these types of scenarios are obviously upset that they tucked their dream away in their back pocket years ago because facing the ease of not working hard to obtain a goal was easier than facing the pain of just going for it and possibly failing. When I release my first ROCKSTAR SUPERSTAR PROJECT (featuring members from Savatage, Kiss, Heart, Goo Goo Dolls etc) I had to pursue that dream relentlessly and without one dollar in my pocket. That band turned into a club for teens in high schools all across the county and serves as a vehicle for teens to ignore the dream crushers and follow their passions. I wish more adults would learn to go against the grain, fix their unhappy lives and go after whatever makes them happy. We all deserve to be happy and although I am not a fan of DL, I am a fan of them wanting to make money and survive while doing what most people would never have the guts to do.
