DAVID LEE ROTH Is Disappointed By MICHAEL ANTHONY's Absence From VAN HALEN Reunion - Feb. 12, 2013
Steve Baltin of Rolling Stone magazine recently conducted a wide-ranging interview with VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth that primarily documents the frontman's recent adventures living in Japan but also touches upon VAN HALEN's future plans and the possibility of new music from the band. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the possibility of new VAN HALEN music in the future:

Roth: "I would certainly look forward to working with Ed [Van Halen] on some new material, but we have yet to do that. Almost all of the music that you hear on our most recent album was written and demoed before the first album. And I would certainly look forward to writing a whole list of songs with Ed, but we haven't found the time to do that. [laughs] You hear the tone. I'm not sure what's in Ed's mind at this point. I'm gonna guess that his plans are to write with his son, and I'm not sure where that actually leads. But truth be told, Edward and I haven't written a new song in 20 years."

On whether there will be more shows after the upcoming Japanese dates:

Roth: "There's nothing on the ticket as far as travel, and that's a disappointment, frankly. How long have I been back with the gang? Maybe six years, we'll say and we have yet to travel to Europe, South America, Japan, anywhere outside of those basic 50 cities in the United States. And, again, that's been a disappointment. We have an audience and we have a potential future in many, many places, but our story is one of a whole lotta Shakespeare going on. And I don't know where the VAN HALEN future lies aside from the States. We'll always be able to play our hits — and keep in mind we have more hits than Beethoven, we have more hits than Tony Soprano — so getting onstage and playing that is glorious, and certainly getting onstage with the brothers will always be an excitement for me. But in terms of taking the music past where we found it, I'm not sure where that's going to go."

On VAN HALEN's future and the possibility of a reunion with bassist Michael Anthony:

Roth: "Ed has his own vision, I'm assuming. We haven't really been able to speak about it and it's a disappointment, just as not having a chance for a reunion of the original band. Clearly, vocals are every bit as much a component of success as a rhythm section or a guitar solo, and there's an old expression saying, 'They don't go home singing the lighting show, they don't go home singing the production.' You're right, they sing my words and my melodies. And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever — that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in EARTH, WIND & FIRE, as identifiable as the high voice in the BEACH BOYS. VAN HALEN is an indelicate house blend of both — that's intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion, and I would always look forward to writing a whole variety of material. I've offered the fellows, come on out here to the land of the gods. And if you don't want to make it that far we'll make it halfway — Konishiki [his friend and former champion sumo wrestler] has said he'll lend me his house in Hawaii, Let's go woodshed. But so far there hasn't been any response, so hope and faith are not actual tactics and strategies — they're strippers from Albuquerque."

that ship has sailed. DLR is dead on; Michael Anthony's voice IS the voice of Van Halen, whether you're talking about the Roth or Hagar era. He sang those choruses, he's the voice you recognize. But Eddie has his son in the band now, and there's no way he's going to kick his son out to bring in a guy who he thinks 'abandoned' VH to play with Sammy (even though VH was dead at the time and Michael was sitting around doing nothing).

for those who went on and on about Michael not having anything to do with the sound of VH, just a bassist, were so off base. His backing vocals were a huge part of the VH sound. And they meshed with Dave's(he could really use the help today), and gave Dave a huge boost.

yes, VH can go on without MA, and they have. Its a good album. but, I did mention, as good as it was, it was also a lazy and uncreative effort, because they just redid a bunch of old songs, note for note. it wasn't done in the fashion of, say, Led Zep using a song or 2 from the last album sessions. THis was a cleaer attempt to recapture the old sound(a good thing), and probably a sign they couldn't write, or the label wasn't behind new material(that didn't exist anyhow).

I'm glad Roth is speaking the truth. STill like the last album over ANYTHING in the Hagar era, it completely rocked, but I have the old demos. THey changed the lyrics, period. ITs good despite Roth's very tired vocals.

For a guy that was alot of image in the 80s(to go with great showmanship), he seems pretty real today. If you told me in 1984 he'd be near bald, I'd say he'd be the first to pull a Joe Lynn Turner and wear a wig. He's been quite real. (and a bit odd too).

people perceive that as anti VH, or anti new album. Its not, but I'd like to see them be more creative, and it sounds like Dave certainly does too. He has material, use it with, via Eddie. EVH wants total control...I'd rather a band go totally uncommerical and no outside writers or old songs, and make an attempt. If they don't have it anymore, so be it.

You gotta figure when Roth got back with the VH bros. he was not allowed to talk about such matters. Remember the 3 of them setting around talking about the bands early days? Like Mr. Anthony never existed! Everyone who enjoys VH music knows Michael is sorely missed.

sounds like Dave had no say, that was already in the works before he rejoined. Anthony is a talented guy, good performer(Wolfie definitely lacks that), and very good voice. Completely added to that signature sounds.

Personally I think that Dave has just as much say as Eddie or Alex. Eddie seems spent, possibly from all the years of drinking and drugs. He may still be able to play but it doesn't seem like he has it in him to be creative any more and therefore living off the past is really all that he has left. Therefore he really needs Dave if he want to do a reunion thing.

Bullshit.

Great interview with Dave. He's right on so many points, chiefly about M Anthony. Yeah, we all get the father/son thing - but Van Halen is one of the biggest bands ever. To dump a key component because he plays with a singer you don't like is fucking stupid.

Got tickets for June in Osaka. All things considered, I do hope they play.

Dave's got nothing to lose. He lost a lot of his "fame" and I'm sure that hurt, during the 90s, but he seems in a different place, re: that. He's older, and I imagine can take it or leave it...and the Bros don't have a lot of options anymore.

Like or hate Dave, he's a very articulate and free thinking. One of his strengths...though he can be like a bad comedian repeating one liners constantly.

Roth is stirring the fire, he has every right to do that. EVH will get top plan future things again when they tour Japan. He had a health scare or two and I think he can't commit to long term plans. Just take it as it comes Dave...and ADKOT was a fabulous album even if the material was left in the fridge that long.

Expect Eddie to take Dave's disappointment as a slight against his son, and things just might implode once again.

That, or a return of MA has been worked out completely on the down-low, and this Roth comment is staged.

to Van Halen, which means he basically says in interviews what he is told to say, end of story. Why is this coming up now? If I were to bet, I'd say Wolfie is leaving the band to do his own thing and they (VH) are getting ready to bring back MA. I always thought they'd do a full blown reunion before they retire, this might be the move they are making now. Food for thought.

Dave wants Mikey back in the band just like the fans. Knew it all along, HE DOESN'T WANT WOLFIE IN THE BAND...because Roth knows his vocals are weak and needs the tried-and-true compliment of Mike's high register to blend with. He needs Mikey to harmonize with to make him sound better...or even listenable, Douchebag Ed's wants "his kid" in the band, which no one wants, it's a total ego thing ("my kid's special", which every parent thinks).

Now if only Dave could sing a fucking note these days and not act like a spastic monkey with parkinson's onstage, while wearing quite-gay engineer's hat and overalls...

A little strange he won't even refer to Wolfgang by name ("his son").

What's with everybody holding it against Wolf? He showed up, did his homework, and does a kickass job. I highly doubt HBSD or As Is were written in 1977. I bet they're Wolf tunes. And they rock.

It was Eddie's call, Al never gets any blame for going along with it, and the last person people should resent is the freaking kid.

Ed has said himself he wouldn't be doing this if not for the chance to play with his son.

Either you're glad you get to see the greatest rock guitarist of all time in top playing form again, with the frontman you've been wishing for for decades, or you're an ungrateful crybaby who makes the perfect the enemy of the "pretty goddamn fucking good". It's quite simple, really.

I see no one dissing Wolf, but more or less saying they'd like MA back, not whining. THe Fucking singer says the same! Is he whining? no, he wants MA back. He fills out the VH sounds.

There's no problem with Wolf. He's not a great performer(He did improve), but people would like the band VH. He was a key part...or maybe they could get Tommy STinson and maybe Eddie can be replaced by Buckethead, we know your affinity for bands with a revolving door.

Everybody always talks about MA's vocals, which are admittedly an integral part of the Van Halen sound. But as somebody who saw the original lineup on several tours, I can testify that MA is one of the best live performers in the history of rock and has more stage presence than any bassist I've ever seen

When you went to see Van Halen back then, they played on a gigantic stage that was barren except for the performers. There was a wall of amplifiers in the back on either side of Alex and the most blinding light show imaginable outside of a Triumph concert. Dave had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Eddie was on the right, MA was on the left, and even on stage with the best frontman in history, standing opposite the best guitarist in the world, you never felt like the stage was unbalanced with MA kicking ass like it was the last show he would ever play.

If you didn't witness it, you couldn't possibly understand. MA is THAT good.

If the Van Halen brothers could swallow their pride and take Dave back, they can certainly do the same with Mike. The failure of the second leg of the tour last year, plus Eddie's most recent health issues, means that time is rapidly running out. They need to cash in on a full reunion while they still can.

Some hilarious comments here, as always on Van Halen articles. My favorite: "you can't bash Wolfie, he's a brilliant bass player". Any brilliance you hear in his playing is strictly in your imagination (i.e. his name is Van Halen so he must be great). Then compare his wooden stage presence with the dynamic Michael Anthony, and tell me why anyone other than Eddie and Alex should be pleased to see Wolfie in the band. Here's hoping Wolfie continues to work with other bands and the original Van Halen does one more tour.

While I'd love to see Michael come back it's not the same as when they took Dave back. To get Dave back they dropped yet another singer that Eddie couldn't get along with. To get Michael back Eddie would have to drop his son which I really don't see him doing unless Wolfie gets a spot in another band that anyone cares about.

he's not brilliant. He plays well. Brilliant, no. as a performer, below average but improving. He was very out of place on the first tour, much more comfortable on the last. MA is a seasoned pro, he was a natural, performing wise.

.Personally, I'd like to see Wolf spread his wings with guys his age, create a band, and new rock, if he's that brilliant. Instead of being in a band with guys pushing 60, who make records once every 5 years. (they earned that I suppose).

First of all, Dave had the power to have a reunion of the original band. Back in 2007 when they first got back together Dave could've refused to do it unless Mike was part of it.

They've now done two tours and an album without Mike. For Dave to turn around now and tell Ed and Alex that Mike has to be part of anything in the future or he's not going to participate would be useless. Ed and Alex would just tell Dave "Okay, Fuck You! We did two tours and a new album with you, which is what the fans wanted for well over 20 years. We're fine if we never tour again."

The time to do it was back in '06 & '07.

I saw VH last March. The show was amazing and I love the CD they put out.

I really hope they keep it going but it really seems like Eddie just doesn't care enough to keep it going.

You are delusional if you think Dave had any power to compel anyone named Van Halen to do anything with the band named Van Halen, then or now. They brought Dave back to bank some coin, and if Dave had said no they would have banked a little less coin with someone else singing and Wolfie still on bass.

Now, if they want to bank a bit more coin, they do one last tour with Dave and Mike, then kick them both out and play once in awhile with Wolfie or not, as they please. Only those with the name Van Halen make any decisions about the band called Van Halen. This ain't the J. Geils Band here, where the other guys go out as the J. Geils Band without J. Geils. Dave takes his paycheck and likes it or he goes home, end of story.

C'mon bring back Michael Anthony already! I'm sure Wolf will be able to actually start his own journey. I mean, his name is Van Halen, and he is the son on one of the world's most acknowledged guitarist Gods. I don't think he'll have too much trouble fining members for a band or joining an already (at least pretty) successful one.

good comments above by all....

I think that Dave is being open, yet politically correct by just praising M. Anthony, yet not really slagging Wolfie. But you can see that he opened up enough to tell the world he wants the real original Van Halen to finish off their career. He misses and wants MA back. For him to say that is quite dangerous, and it will get back to Eddie or Wolfie unfortunately. Dave hints that it was not even on the table for discussion before, and the topic is off limits with the Van Halen gang.

Cool for him for saying it, but that just might be the end of his tenure in the band when Eddie is so easily offended and volatile.

You claim not to be a troll but everything you say in response to anything I post indicates otherwise.

Actually, all I ever seem to read from folks about Wolfgang involves nepotism or his weight. I don't see why he deserves that. Honestly I don't get the hate towards Ed either. The man clearly knows his days are numbered and he wants to spend them playing with his son. His son has done an admirable job and is quite gifted, not just as a bass player. Either you get to see a music legend perform or you don't (two, actually, I count Alex). Quite simple. You either get over that it won't be your "perfect" vision of VH and accept the "really fucking good" version while you still have the chance or you don't.

GN'R is a totally separate thing. The GN'R folks all quit over the years and I never said I "prefer" the new lineup, which, again, is you being a troll despite claiming not to be one.

DLR is expressing his preference, but he still goes along with it. Alex goes along with it. They're all old men who have learned how to accept each other. Ed set his terms and they agreed. He could always stay home.

People still show up. Some folks on the internet bitch. That's about it. The folks in the band obviously don't let the "perfect" be the enemy of the "good", which makes them wiser than most of the crying internet folk.

Ed's getting a bum rap here. I don't think he'll freak out after reading DLR's rap. He knows that Dave's neutral in this. People think he'll pull the plug now and fire Dave. I think Ed's a bigger boy than that. Don't you? He's sober now, and healthy which can only help matters.

I think you're wrong, I think he'll not be happy. He's an insecure guy with lot of yes men. DLR didn't say all that negative though, he was just real.

Hopefully Wolfie chooses to bow out and play with Tremonti full time or something, leaving the door open for Mike to come back. But with Ed this is unlikely.

In the videos of VH's most recent tour, DLR sounds like dung. And looks idiotic. Too bad, he did good vox 30 years ago.

The only way the true original Van Halen would get back is if Wolfie would give up his spot and convince his dad that it the right thing to do. Is that possible? Only Wolfie holds the answer. If Wolfie is smart he would be with another band and make on his own and not live in the shadow of Mike Anthony. Rock on Diamond David!

There's no arguing about VH's history in rock but EVH is an egotistical, pompous ass SOB kicking Michael Anthony out and replacing him with his inexperience fat kid. Fuck You Eddie!

Gotta agree with Roth here. He tells it like it is, and is correct. But VH is probably over anyway after ol' Ed & Al read this.

Michael Anthony is what the new VH album is lacking...CLEARLY lacking. Otherwise I'd be able to tell you the name or two songs...and the only reason I can tell you at least one of them is everyone and their dog says "stay frosty" on Blabbermouth.

What I glean from Dave's comments is the band is officially inactive once again, and his future with the band is uncertain at best. No other reason Dave would break ranks and be so candid in an interview. I wouldn't be surprised if the Japan dates are officially cancelled.

don't claim not to be a troll. never said that. have never once written "im not a troll"...I'm hairy knuckled, live under a bridge, and have a sloped back. I'm a troll....You are what you are, if you think I'm a "troll", so be it. A troll just writes "hate it, sux, etc" with no thought. I don't think that's where I come from ever out here.

no one wrote about Wolf's weight ONCE in this thread. you make up stuff to whine about.

re: GnR, you take such a pro Axl approach its boring, no matter what the subject. His OWN guitarist is sick of waiting on the new record, and waiting for Axl to come on stage, thats the whole point of a recent thread...and you write "people whining about Axl's cover band"..its like you are creating a diversion. Hello, Bumblefoot is saying "I can't even think about the new record or it will drive me mad"...the band member is complaining about Axl's complete and utter bullshit.

at least be real. I repect you like Axl, or VH with wolf, but you have blind loyality. I liked Axl. and don't mind Wolf, but let's get real. Show up, yes. But its still not the same with out the key members, that's all people are saying. If MA had left under good terms, fine, people are calling Eddie, and Axl out for the way the handled things, both beyond poorly. They deserve the backlash, 100%. 2 bitter men.

does it change my life either way, no, but we are all writing on a topic in the thread. You fain disinterest, yet I think you have the most interest in defending(particularily Axl). no?

crying. no crying in rock n roll. just people stating some opinions, if not facts. Maybe Bumblefoot should be fired now too.

The new album rocks! It far exceeded my expectations, especially since the songs were written in'74 or whatever, it sounds fresh to me. I miss Mike also and who knows, maybe Wolf will continue with his own career with Tremonti or whatever and not want VH? DLR was never a good singer but an absolute master personality much like Morrison and Cooper. Vocalist/Frontman is more like it. There's almost nothing more entertaining than just simply listening to Roth talk about shit.

Van Halen is a fucking joke. Any band that has to rely on 30 year old material and can't even write new songs is pathetic.

No Michael Anthony = No Van Halen. They brought the show to my city 2x and both times I skipped it. Sorry, I have no interest in seeing some 20 year old kid play his parts.

The problem with Van Halen is simple: Eddie is a fucking asshole.

while I agree relying so heavily on 35 year old material is very uncreative, and lazy, its still good....and if you really think about, while I'd rather a band take more risks, there are no bands age 60 that are writing great songs, making a killer album, top to bottom. Maybe a small exception or 2.

I think VH without Michael is missing that element that made them a force in rock music. I wish that all the egos in VH would get over themselves and reconcile. I know that Anthony is enjoying Chickenfoot. I'd love to see them all back together even if it were just an album and world tour. The 90's missed VH complete. The 00's missed VH complete. Let's change that.

You should hear some of you idiots on here. So you go to see Vh because of bass playing and background vocals? I go to see eddie and a tight band. I have seen this band with all of its lineups. I would like the original lineup but I'm very happy with what it is. If you think Wolfgang is anything less than great on the bass you are no musician. Reminds me of a hybrid billy Sheehan. I also had no problems with the vocals and playing this kid did. I actually enjoyed when Eddie and Wolfgang locked in on china town and others. I'm not here to compare. Michael Anthony rules but how do you think he looked on stage at 16? Wolfgang was playing to 25,000 people when he was 16 playing some of the greatest classic rocks songs ever. I never heard him miss a note. He is way better live now and actually moves.

As for Dave, classy statement, but of course he wants Michael there to cover up his blown out vocals. Quit smoking. It's obvious what is the problem with his vocals. Dave be honest, you haven't been in the same room with a pen and a pad writing with Eddie ever. The music is always done 1st and you come in and lay down vocals. There were 6 old songs and six new. I'm sorry but if I am recording music for 30 years and haven't released an album in 15 years its not like the creativity is gone. Eddie has been recording for years. Sounds creative to me. Roth seemed like he embraced the thought of digging up the old demos to capture the original sound of the band. Be careful what you say Dave or you will be playing to a half empty house of blues.

Looks like we will be seeing cherone after all

Someone also said something about the new album is missing something, you are outta your fucking mind. With the exception of tatto and beats working, the album is damn near perfect.

while I agree the new album was good, and I don't go to see Michael Anthony, I did like listening to his background vocals, they were indeed a essential part of the classic VH sound.

MA probably wouldn't have been arena proof at age 16 as well, but doesn't make it right to throw a deer into the headlights, which was what Wolf was in 2007. He didn't miss a note, but he was also a very bad performer. Zero energy. I will credit him for working on that, and coming more of age, but he's still not a natural, like all of the original VH, they were masters, on every aspect of their craft.

Or one possibilty is the VH brothers are looking for a replacement singer behind Dave's back. Frankly given Dave's vocal performance on the last tour it would be understandable. There's certainly no honor in going behind his back if that's what's going on but let's' face facts, that's' Ed and Al's MO. They worked with Dave behind Sam's back leading to Sam's departure. Then they immediately started working with Cherone behind Dave's back while Dave thought he was back in 96. Doing the honorable thing when it comes to members of this band has never been the brothers' forte.

good points The Mighty Sgt Hartman. While I do prefer the DLR VH, Roth was barely serviceable vocally on this tour. And age has ravaged him of his once stage prowess, he choses now to employ Mime and vaudeville style moves. Not cool!

Roth is right, Mike has an unmistakable voice. When the first record came out, It was Mike's vocals that impressed me as much as Ed's guitars. Songs like "Jamie's Cryin' " "Your No Good" and "Women in Love" come to life because of Mike. Drugs & Drink have ruined EVH. There's no coming back after that.
Dave & Mike should put something together.

Here lies the real difference between Hagar and Roth. In 2004, Hagar was asked to rejoin the band, minus Michael Anthony. Hagar refused. Hagar's stance was it's all or nothing. The sisters then agreed to keep MA.

Roth on the other hand has been desperate for 20 to become remotely relevant, that he agreed to re-join even when Ed said Mike was out and his son was in. I certainly believe that Roth had the clout to demand MA stay in the band, but he run the risk of not being in the band at all if he took that stance. So, in the end, Roth was about himself.
