BLACK SABBATH In The Studio: Behind-The-Scenes Video To Be Released Tomorrow - Feb. 12, 2013
Legendary heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH will release its much-anticipated new album, "13", in June via Vertigo/Universal Republic in the U.S. and Vertigo in all other territories. The drum tracks on the group's first LP with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978 were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion.

Osbourne, Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "God Is Dead", "End Of The Beginning" and "Age Of Reason", the latter two of which stretch out to as long as eight minutes.

A full behind-the-scenes video from the "13" recording sessions will be released tomorrow. In the meantime, check out a 30-second teaser below.

"I wanted to make an album that stood alongside their first four albums," Rubin tells RollingStone.com. "The first album wasn't a straightforward heavy metal record. You could hear the jazz influence, so that was the goal, and to capture that live interaction."

Ward in May 2012 announced again that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of the new album, due to a contractual dispute. After SABBATH shot down Rubin's suggestion to replace Ward with Ginger Baker (CREAM) ("I thought, 'Bloody hell?'" Iommi tells the magazine. "I just couldn't see that."), Rick suggested Wilk.

Iommi tells RollingStone.com that Ward's demands came out of the blue. "I didn't know Bill was having these issues when we got together — he never even mentioned it to us," he says. "It was quite confusing. We wanted him involved, but it was just getting too hard." Adds Osbourne: "You can't go, 'Well, I don't like it.' You get off your ass and get your shit together. The life of a bohemian rock star is fucking long over."

Iommi was diagnosed with cancer at the end of 2011, and his treatments forced BLACK SABBATH to cancel all but three tour dates in 2012 after announcing their reunion in November 2011.

"Things are fairly good, dare I say, at the moment," Iommi tells RollingStone.com. "I'm still here and it's okay. We had to do this album now. Christ, if it happened in another 10 years, I don't know if we'd be around."

Osbourne, who describes the new SABBATH album as "Satanic blues," also spoke about one of the band's new tracks, the provocatively titled "God Is Dead". "It starts off, 'God is dead,'" Osbourne says, "but at the end it says, 'I don't believe that God is dead.'"

I disagree with Ozzy's statement about the importance of this record. I feel that his most important records were his first BS record and his first solo record after leaving BS.

I honestly don't wanna hear the new music (except maybe the single) until I buy the album.

I feel the same way. If I hear anything now it may put a damper on my expectations of the album. Plus one of the coolest things back in the day was waiting in anticipation for a new album to be released. Call me old, but I remember when the only thing we'd be able to hear for months was a single, and it was awesome. I'll take that approach with this album.

Ginger Baker would have been a cool choice as drummer, but oh well.

Can't wait to watch the entire video.

I wish we would have, to an extent. I'm a huge fan of Bill Ward's too, but maybe (just maybe) his pride is hurt because maybe his health is not quite up there to handle the rigors of Sabbath music.. We've all heard it about the contracts and his dissatisfaction with it. Who knows? Yes, it's a drag that Bill is not part of '13'. *Something* has to be at the root of this whole thing. Money, ego, pride... It's a shame for everyone, really. Bill has come and gone numerous times before. Having said that, 3/4 of the original Black Sabbath is better than no Black Sabbath at all.

Everyone's writing off this album like they've heard it already. To kick up that much drama and controversy even before anyone's heard a lick of it yet.. I bet it is a killer album, and that Brad Wilk does an awesome job of it on the drums.. Ozz will sing really well, Tony will floor us all with some stellar riffs and Geezer will shake the fillings in people's teeth with his bass playing and great lyrics.

Either way, Bill chose not to be part of the new album. It is what it is. Sad that he's not there, but still psyched and excited to hear this new Sabbath record anyway. It's quite trendy to bash on Rick Rubin. Nevermind that the guy has had a hand in quite a few great records.

This is all just as much Bill's fault as perhaps Ozzy's, Sharon's, Tony's or Geezer's. Not many people seem to want to cop to that. It all is what it is.

Who's to say, really? New blood with Rick Rubin and Brad Wilk could be the thing that made this album happen. Anyway, enough babble from the likes of me. Looking forward to the new previews from the studio tomorrow.

\m/

I'm treating Bill like Bonzo. I'd still see a Zeppelin
reunion or anticipate a new album like crazy.
So until Bill realizes this is for the fans
not himself, he's dead to me. RIP Bill, and (John Bonham).
I too will not listen to a millisecond of the new album until its release.

I hope there's not a "Harmonica Song" because they're "trying so hard to be bluesy" and "Getting back to Roots" and "Gotta have the one that reminds people of "The Wizard!"

IF I hear a harmonica, the whole thing is off.

this could be really good..
--
what if this album just slays like way beyond expectations

that would be so cool--cuz you know--when people do these reuniouns and its not as good as their earlier stuff--

but what if this was just freakin killer as shit--better than what you thought---that would kick ass

The video is really trying hard to give the impression that this is a reunion of the original Black Sabbath. Pretty sad.

Rick Rubin originally wanted to replace Bill Ward with Cream drummer Ginger Baker!

Hoping to hear some new material in the video. Anyone that says Bill Ward isn't that good of a drummer, isn't a real Sabbath fan. Just listening for the fun in it. I mean he's no Bonzo, but c'mon. Bring on the new freaking album.

if this album is great, it will resurrect metal like it hasn't seen since the late 80s/early 90s. if it sucks, it will be another nail in the coffin of good music.
