I will agree that Jethro Tull are pretty awesome! Steve Harris himself will tell you how much Aqualung and Thick As A Brick were a huge influence on him... Maiden even covered Cross Eyed Mary... I hate it that there is a whole generation of people who only know them as the band who robbed that Grammy from Metallica... However, I'm not going to compare the two bands...

Not at all defending the Grammys, as I think they're essentially useless, but the category IS Hard Rock/Metal, and Halestorm IS a hard rock band. I'm sure the majority of the other bands couldn't care less that they didn't win, and in no way is this worse than the Jethro Tull/Metallica debacle.

m not upset at Halestorm winning. The Grammys are all about celebrating pop music in all its forms. Halestorm is pop hard rock. The other bands nominated really aren't all that pop/mainstream. In terms of radio play, Megadeth and Manson are pretty much the only real competition amongst the nominees, and even then their newer stuff gets little to no play when compared to their 'hits.' (referring to terrestrial radio rather than genre specific satellite stations) Halestorm is a new band that is really popular in terms of radio play and record sales. They are also the youngest band nominated and look better on TV than the other bands (appearances are important for schlock TV awards shows). The Grammys are all about the surface of entertainment, not the art behind it. They're about popularity rather than substance. Halestorm are good at what they do, which is relatively non offense party rock songs. As far as I'm concerned, they deserved the award.

This grouping used to have 12 categories distributed among both hard rock and metal genres. Now it's 4. It's sad really.

Though, I'm glad that bands like Anthrax and Iron Maiden have gotten some recognition for being nominated, I'm pissed that it doesn't get much more than a sidebar mention ...it's almost blended into the commercials so nobody notices it. Sad really.

As for Halestom...I think the powers that be chose them because they're safe enough for the conservative soccer moms (since it's got a female singer) but edgy enough to qualify for the category (because, it's got a female singer).

I love Tull, so this isn't about whether they deserved to win, whether Halestorm winning is worse, blah blah blah. I just wanted to add that of all the concerts I've been to - which included obviously tons of metal shows, one of the heaviest songs I ever experienced live was Tull's "Locomotive Breath." Doane Perry simply crushed it live.

Considering the metal award wasn't even aired on TV, i'd say that there are bigger issues than who actually one.

The Grammys are about the music BUSINESS (entertainment lawyers were being honored in the R.I.P. segment). Metal is one of the most anti-business genres out there (BTW, where is the Punk award?). Money, record sales, image and presentation, marketing, radio...they are not only disregarded among metal heads, they are shunned and ridiculed. Look at most of the attitudes here towards the Grammys themselves.

Is it any wonder that hard rock and metal acts are shrinking from the spotlight? They never get to perform. They are off the broadcast and lumped into one insignificant category. I won't be surprised if they change the name of the category in future years, cutting out Metal altogether.

Shadows Fall gets shittier & shittier with every album

Because the Grammy isn't a lifetime achievement award. A grammy doesn't mean that Halestorm is a better band than Maiden, Megadeth or the others who were nominated. It simply means that the song that they were nominated for was chosen over the the individual song that the others were nominated for. And lets be honest, none of the nominated songs were all that special.
