VINNY APPICE Discusses LAST IN LINE Project - Feb. 4, 2013
Former DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell revealed in April 2012 that he is planning to join forces with three other original DIO members to play "some gigs" that will see the musicians performing material from the early DIO records that Campbell appeared on. Dubbed LAST IN LINE, Campbell, Vinny Appice (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass) and Claude Schnell (keyboards) will be accompanied by singer Andrew Freeman, who has previously fronted HURRICANE and LYNCH MOB.

Speaking to Artisan News on the "red carpet" of the Los Angeles premiere of "Sound City", the new feature-length documentary directed and produced by FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl, Appice stated about how the idea for LAST IN LINE came about: "We just jammed one night. Viv [Campbell] called up and said, 'You wanna jam?' He was playing with STEEL PANTHER and they played 'Rainbow In The Dark' and he had such a good time playing it that he went, 'You know what?! This is cool.' He called me up [and said], 'Yeah, let's jam.' So we all got together and we played. And we hadn't played those songs in thirty-something years, and it was tight. So he said, 'You wanna do some dates?' I said, 'Let's schedule it and it'll be fun.'"

On the topic of what Freeman adds to the LAST IN LINE project, Vinny said: "I'd played with [Andy] before. He's a really good singer. Real passionate. We're not trying to have somebody look like Ron [Ronnie James Dio] or sing exactly like him — just somebody that will sing it with passion like Ronnie did, with his heart."

LAST IN LINE will embark on a European tour this summer, to be preceded by regional U.S. warm-up shows.

Campbell and Ronnie James Dio worked together on the first three DIO albums 1983's "Holy Diver", 1984's "The Last in Line" and 1985's "Sacred Heart" — before Irishman Campbell left to join WHITESNAKE in 1987.

I didn't watch the video. Did anybody ask him what it feels like to stab a friend in the back as soon as his body goes cold?

to see Vivian Cambell doing Dio's music. He should have said good things about Dio when he was around. I know he's the original Dio guitar player but somehow it just does not feel right to support this project.

Dio was not only an amazing singer but he was great to his fans, I can't think of anyone of Dio's peers who were that appreciative of their fans. It really sucks that he died, I'm positive that he'd still be on tour right now!

I guess viv is tired of being told what Dio fans really think of him so they sent a"friend" to talk about playing music they have had nothing to do with for 30 yers. great you guys played on the records but you were recording HIS songs not yours. if any of them had anything to do with writing then how come none of them have done anything that remotley sounds like that music since they were in the band? and like it or not cambpell trashed that music and metal every chance he got over the last 30 years but now he wants to reclaim it?. you had plenty of time to make amends with Ronnie while he was alive but to wait untill he is dead to want to play the music you did together just shows what a low life scumbag you are.

This is no more "shameless" than Wendy Dio putting together a real hack band called Dio's Disciples and going out on tour. She was still married to Dio, but had been dating a younger guy for a decade. The second the guy drops dead from cancer, all of a sudden Wendy needed to keep the gravy train going...hence the disciples.

Say what you want about cash grabs, but Wendy didn't write a song or a single note of the music she has used to enrich herself all these years. The original lineup already had the music written when they were hired by RJD, and they are entitled to make money off of the music they wrote and recorded.

Sheesh, you twerps will scream bloody murder at the mere mention of Sharon Osborne, but blindly ignore Wendy cheating on her "husband" for close to twenty years and moving in for the most disgusting attempt at ripping off the fans by putting together the mother of all cash grabs in recent history. Sharon Osborne isn't an angel, but she at least has the decency to stick around with her meal ticket, unlike this scandalous scalawag RID married himself to.

I'm conflicted on how to feel about the project. Cambell might have been an ass, but Dio wasn't exactly nice to him either. PERHAPS Cambell is starting to appreciate the amazing music he help wrote. I'll just be positive on the matter.

Obviously the only way to have the right opinion is to agree with you. Wish I would have known that for the last 32 years.

Look, we all know Vinny and Vivian were a huge part in establishing Dio's solo career. But to say that Ronnie was disloyal to them just because he took almost all the money is kind of harsh. Besides, it was 30 years ago. Don't you think you should let it go?

...(post Dio) and yes, this seems like way too much, too late. If not for RJD, he would have had NO CAREER. No Whitesnake, no Def Lep, etc. (not that those were artistic triumphs, but he sure made a bunch of coin.)

The only thing I'll say is that I doubt he stands to make much $ from this, so he's not doing it for that reason.

But if you're looking to mend fences, do it while someone is alive.

I'm a DIO fan and I think this is great. I saw the original band on the Last In Line tour and they definitely have a unique chemistry. I hope they play some real shows in the States so I can go see them.

And for all you little bitches who think DIO was like Jesus or something, get a fucking clue. Legendary singer, great with his fans, but he was also a business man who took care of himself. Not everyone got along with him. Big fucking deal. Vinny hasn't stabbed anyone in the back. He's only told the truth. Having played with Ronnie in Black Sabbath and then gone with him to the solo band, I think he knows a lot more about the situation than any of you pathetic suck ups!

Screw that disrespectful POS Vivian, and any one else involved with this cover band. They had many years to put all their BS in the past. When Dio was alive! But waiting after he passes? That is a new low! Is Viv that butthurt for money badly? He plays in Def frigging leppard for christ sakes!

No Ronnie James Dio = No Last In Line

Yeah, that Def Leppard payday is so little, Vivian needs to be doing this.

A bunch of guys want to play the music they helped create, heaven forbid.

I loved Ronnie's music, but he wasn't a saint (and neither is Vivian). Doesn't anyone remember Ronnie quitting Sabbath (Round Two) because he refused to play at Ozzy's farewell shows? A great album (Dehumanizer) was followed up by nothing because Ronnie didn't want to play two lousy gigs underneath Ozzy.

Just go on and play with that backstabber Vivian Campbell. I mean maybe he did change his mind about the music, but I really question it. Seems just sick and wrong.

This, the same as the Dio Disciples, is a cash grab project created from opportunism now that Dio is dead. Shame on them, that is all.
