Former ANTHRAX Guitarist ROB CAGGIANO Joins VOLBEAT - Feb. 4, 2013
Former ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano has joined Danish metal rock 'n' rollers VOLBEAT. Caggiano served as producer on VOLBEAT's latest album, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies", alongside longtime production partner Jacob Hansen, who produced and mixed the band's prior four albums. Caggiano's other producer credits include THE DAMNED THINGS, BLEEDING THROUGH and ANTHRAX, and he was a member of ANTHRAX for two tenures — from 2001 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2013.

Comments VOLBEAT singer and guitarist Michael Poulsen: "The band is very proud and happy to announce that he will also be the new guitar player in VOLBEAT. The collaboration with Rob in the studio was so inspiring and in good spirit that we the decided to keep him. Basically we went into the studio as a three-piece and came out as a whole band!”

Adds Caggiano: "Wow! I have to say I'm completely blown away by the turn of events over the last few weeks here in Denmark and at this point an update is definitely in order.

"To start with, I came to Denmark about a month ago to produce the new VOLBEAT record which in and of itself has been an incredibly exciting adventure from a producer's perspective thus far. However, I'm extremely happy to say my relationship with these guys will not end there as it turns out... it's just beginning!

"Michael had asked me on the phone before I got out here if I would play some guest solos on the new album in addition to my other duties, and, of course, I was thrilled about that and agreed to do so. When I actually got to Denmark and started going through the material, this turned out to be so much more than that.

"After weeks of collaboration between Michael and I, it became quite clear that we had an amazing creative chemistry together and a huge mutual respect for one another.

"It's so refreshing and inspiring to be creative again on a songwriting level that words can't even describe it and the vibe between Anders, Jon, Michael and I is just awesome. I'd say an artistic relationship like this one is very rare and it's also something I don't take for granted.

"When the guys asked me if I was interested in joining VOLBEAT the other day, my jaw just about hit the floor! It actually didn't even register in my brain properly until the next morning, but I gotta say, it also didn't take me long to decide. It really isn't the way I envisioned the rest of my year to play out but at the same time, THIS feels more 'right' to me than anything I could have possibly imagined and I'm going for it!

"To all my fans, family, friends and overall supporters that have reached out to me over this last month wondering if I'm ever gonna play guitar again or what I'm up to in general etc., see you all soon my friends and get ready for a wild ride!!!"

VOLBEAT's fifth album, "Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies", will be released on April 9 (one day earlier internationally) via Spinefarm/Universal Music.

Says Poulsen: "Half of the album tracks will take you into the world of outlaw gunslinger stories sometime in the 1800s. Some of the characters are true legends, while others are fiction. The listener will hear inspiration from classic spaghetti western movies which gives you a clue to the album title and cover artwork."

He adds: "We are still 'rocking out' in the studio, and working on the last details. We are very excited about this album. We feel that we've achieved the goals we set out. The heavy stuff on the album is perhaps more old-school heavy riffs than earlier, and the rock songs rock out with tons of melodies and take us into uncharted territory. All that without losing the VOLBEAT sound that is the cornerstone of our band."

VOLBEAT will embark on a North American headlining tour in the spring. The trek, which will feature support from DANKO JONES, will kick off on March 6 in Dallas, Texas.

VOLBEAT in 2011 parted ways with guitarist Thomas Bredahl, who had been a member of the band since 2006. He was replaced on the road by MERCYFUL FATE's Hank Shermann

VOLBEAT's fourth album, "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven", has sold more than 170,000 copies in the United States since its December 2010 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD was once again recorded at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark with producer Jacob Hansen. The cover artwork was created by illustrator Karsten Wrysand.

VOLBEAT in 2011 released "Live From Beyond Hell/Above Heaven" via Vertigo/Universal on double DVD, Blu-ray, limited double DVD + audio CD, CD, digital download and VOD. The set included footage from VOLBEAT's sold-out show in front of 10,000 fervent fans at the Forum in Copenhagen, to the House of Blues in Anaheim, California and the Rock Am Ring show in Germany.

Band politics and Blabbermouth keyboard wankers aside...

Anthrax piss all over Volbeat.

Besides, I thought Rob would have gone back to playing Julian in Trailer Park Boys rather than joining another band. It looks much more fun.

Once again, BBmouth turned a simple news into fake drama.

Awesome band. On the last Gigantour they were easily the best of the bands playing. Now, with this news, the band has added the double threat of a really good guitarist and, a producer who will only get better as he hones his studio skills.

If you have not yet seen Volbeat, don't fuck up - score a ticket to a show.

I like Anthrax and Volbeat? Meh. They'd be a lot better if his vocals actually changed from track to track.

To sum up, Anthrax lost a solid, if a little uninspiring guitar player and Volbeat gained one.

Move along, nothing to see here......

This is really great news! A great band just got MUCH better! I saw Volbeat live when the Damned Things were on tour with them and I was blown away. Rob actually got up and rocked Angelfuck with them that night too and I remember thinking that was one of the coolest parts of the show. They fit perfectly together. I just wish I could understand what the singer was saying more. It seems like his english/lyrics might be a little off but hopefully Rob will fix this with his production magic on the new album. I have their last 2 albums but I already know this new one will be their best one yet especially with Rob producing and playing on it. I can't wait to hear it!

Let's face it, half the time Charlie and Scott don't even show up for Anthrax shows. Hell, Anthrax used a fill in while Scott played guitar for his wife's bands tour. Anthrax exists for a paycheck and that's it, they died when they booted Bush.
High five to Rob for moving forward and joining a band that appreciates its fans and are still hungry to succeed

Obvious. He tasted being able to have a creative input while producing Volbeat, and they're not an obscure band, he'll still be playing large audiences and should have some cash from this too. For him it must be like switching a dead-end job in a corporation to a creative job where he's a part of the team.

Good for him he showed Scott and the rest of Anthrax. After Scott's comment about a "bad decision" it was obvious he was underappreciated in that band... Scott probably thinks giving this guy an opportunity to be Anthrax touring guitarist with a steady paycheck and not much to say was the best thing that could happen in Rob's career. With Bush refusing to come back and re-record vocals on Worship, it would also be an ultimate fuck you if Joey jumped ship now to a better band. It remember clips from their shows with Nelson... they looked embarassed at times.

Unless Rob has been hiding some big melodic, old school chops all these years I just wonder how good of long term fit he'd be with Michael Poulsen, who is in many way a rockabilly nut.

Not really surprised at this. They mention that Rob got to join in the creative process, which is something he would never be able to do in Anthrax. Its all about being a member of a band and contributing (and finally getting royalties) vs. being a hired gun to play solos. After all the years in Anthrax, Rob was still ultimately a hired hand. Probably looked ahead and saw nothing but yet another nostalgia tour and another long break for writing he would not be a part of. Being in Volbeat is a big step for him.

We invented them in Canada for cold weather. Snow and ice. Why the hell he wears them in a warm climate or indoors blows my mind! That would be fucking hot as hell. We take them off when we go inside, or when the temperature is above freezing.

My first Anthrax cd was Sound of White Noise. I didn't return the Columbia House monthly selection of the month card back. Even though I would hear the older cds with Joey on vocals through friends. White Noise did it for me. John Bush had the voice that Anthrax was missing. I love Joey. But John had the gig. I think Anthrax made some poor choices in the past. I can honestly say that if Spitz comes back they would become bigger. Goodluck Rob you rock.

He might get a more money based on a better deal with Volbeat and being screwed over by Anthrax, but on the whole Anthrax brings in a hell of a lot more coin than Volbeat.

That and it seems Volbeat is now just blowing up worldwide and on their way to being huge. Anthrax put out a solid record last time around and they're doing the right thing w/ Joey on the mic, but they are nearing the end of their run with what, 3 maybe 4 records left in them if we're lucky... Volbeat, I guarantee is a lot more popular with those folks under 30 and their music is a lot more accessible than thrash metal...so combine all that with the fact that they guy was working for Paul & Gene pt. 2 and I think it's safe to say that he'll be making more dough at his new gig.

I'm a huge Anthrax fan but I think you're wrong. Previous articles here have stated the last Volbeat record sold 170,000 copies in the US. The last Anthrax record sold 100,000 copies in the US. Volbeat does have a year and a half on Anthrax, but I think record sales generally drop considerably after the initial release. Those numbers won't change very much. Volbeat is on their way up in popularity. (This doesn't mean they're better. That's a matter of opinion.)

is definitely a legendary band with a long history but I'd say Volbeat is much bigger than them at this point or at least it seems like that. I think Volbeat headline arenas in europe too which would mean they are making much more than $10,000 a night as someone mentioned. Probably a few hundred thousand a night going by what other bands at the level make. Just a guess though

but in the scheme of things, Rob is probably going to be making a lot more money than he did in Anthrax. Anthrax is a band which doesn't make their money on albums, but by touring...and they've toured a lot the past year and a half. He probably just got burnt out from all the shows. Good for him!

Wow, things in the Anthrax camp must have really sucked then. Good for him!
