KERRY KING Talks New SLAYER Album, JEFF HANNEMAN's Health Status (Video) - Feb. 1, 2013
Eddie Trunk — co-host of the VH1 Classic television program "That Metal Show" who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM — conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King for Hartke at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.

On the status of the long-awaited new SLAYER album:

King: "We got two songs completed last year that I thought were come out [as an EP] before [we embarked on the Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [Festival last summer]. And since they didn't, they're just gonna be on the [full-length] record. They've just gotta get mixed. We have another one that just needs vocals and leads, and then me and Dave [Lombardo, drums] are working on eight complete other ones that we haven't demoed. We've just gotta go in…

"The whole hold-up now, as with every record we ever do, it seems like [head of SLAYER's longtime label American Recordings] Rick Rubin changes distributors. And we're kind of, like, left in limbo until he lands somewhere. I mean, realistically, we're without a deal [right now], but we plan on staying with Rick. But he's working out his distribution. When that gets settled, we'll be recording. So I am very comfortable saying it will be out this year."

On the status of SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who has been absent from the road for the past two years while he is recovering from contracting necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite:

King: "You probably know more than me, dude. Believe it or not. [laughs] You know, not to make it sound weird, but when you get off tour, you scatter. And I don't talk to him [not] because I hate him, I don't talk to him because I had enough of him. I don't talk to Tom [Araya, bass/vocals]. The only reason I talk to Dave is 'cause we rehearse all the time. When I get off tour, I just wanna go chill and be 'Kerry,' not 'Kerry King,' you know what I mean?! But the best I know, I talk to my manager, he talks to [Jeff] periodically, and he's still trying to get back in the game."

On whether Jeff is part of the songwriting process for the new SLAYER album:

King: "Not yet. I have enough material to do it on my own, if need be. But I'm open; if Jeff comes to the party with some material, hell yeah, I've got extras."

On whether he will play all the guitar parts on the new SLAYER album and whether SLAYER's fill-in guitarist Gary Holt (of EXODUS fame) will appear on the record:

King: "No, no, no… I'll play all the guitars. But I mean, I've been playing all the guitars for years anyway — except for Jeff's leads."

Last few albums have been kind of boring bro. May want to re-think that approach this time around.

Can you confess more openly that your band is dysfunctional and is only kept together by the need to make a living? Of course band members don't have to be super best friends and it's absolutely understandable that you need to take time off from people you share a tour bus for weeks and so on. But come on, that guy is seriously injured, he's 1/4 of your band and an important one, too. I mean, even if you look at it only from a business point of view - if your business partner is ill and can't do his job, you wanna call him sometimes and check on his recovery status, don't you?

No disrespect to Jeff, but King is saying that he has been doing all the guitar work for years. It sounds as if Jeff played those killer solos on classics like RIB, SOH, and SITA but has not contributed in the studio for years and just goes out on tour and plays those same solos from over 20 year ago. I would say that Slayer has been nice to Jeff by even keeping him in the band??

...with Jeff has to come to a head. I don't like the sound of this "talking through lawyers" bullshit. That IS NOT metal. Be brothers about the shit, and come out and tell the fans the fucking truth.

If Jeff is gone then put Slayer to bed. Fuck Gary Holt, I have a ton of respect for him when he's playing Toxic Waltz, but Jeff Hanneman he is not.

You fail to realise that Jeff Hanneman is an employee of Slayer. Kerry King OWNS the name and the rights to the brand. If he wanted to get rid of him, he'd be able to do it quite easily.

Rock bands are not a group of brothers, they are companies and not all of the members are owners...some of them are just employees. You could just as easily see Dan Spitz up there playing lead, they don't have to keep that guy on the payroll anymore than your boss would have to, if you decided to take two years off.

... but his claim of "writing and playing all the guitar parts on recent albums" is the reason Slayer is shit now. Look back at the first 4-5 Slayer albums, you know, the amazing, untouchable albums. Hanneman wrote nearly every classic song that you've ever heard from the band. Angel of Death, Raining Blood, South of Heaven, War Ensamble, Seasons In the Abyss, Dead Skin Mask, Die By The Sword. All Hanneman only.... and all of the other classics are Hanneman/King. Look at how many songs are only King without Hanneman. #1 there are only a few, and #2 those few are usually the most forgettable songs on the records.

KK has a big mouth. Without Hanneman's writing, Slayer would be another forgotten thrash band. The best thing Slayer as a band could do if Jeff doesn't come back is either use his ideas for songs or tell King to take a back seat and have Gary Holt write the material.

slayer is shit because of the terrible 'vocals' (you cant even call it vocals).. toms voice is destroying the records since the 90ies.. i have no idea whats wrong with him.. he has one of the best metal voices.. but for some twisted reason he started to yell since mid 90ies.. that kills their albums.. great guitar riffing.. both king en jeff.. but the voice of tom is so uglyyyyy

Kerry is doing all the talking. I'd like to hear what's on Jeff's mind these days.

Kerry saying he had enough of Jeff probably means Kerry just don't have anything to say to Jeff after a tour is over...or maybe Kerry has generally had enough of Jeff long time ago, maybe there is no real friendship left between them, just an acquaintance and a professional relationship in order to make music and tour. Now it seems that there's nothing left for Jeff to return to - Kerry can and probably will do the guitar work, maybe even ask Gary Holt contribute something, maybe Kerry will ask Gary to tour with them again in the future. The fact that Kerry stated that they communicate through management...well it makes me sick. OK, they live far from each other, but in this day and age of computers and cell phones they can't communicate directly about anything? They just won't communicate...

My guesses are:

- Jeff has recovered good, but won't come back because of different problems with Kerry, problems that they won't reveal to the fans because they want to be so Slayer about this

- Jeff has recovered good, but maybe he's REALLY had enough of Kerry, maybe even had enough of Slayer altogether and just won't admit it

Sure, it's their band and they can do how they choose to do. It's just that we the fans are interested in all of this and we want to know what's really going on. Kerry is not saying a lot about the situation with Jeff, but rather just keeping up the same obscure and pretty nosy "Jeff is welcome to come back when he can" and "I've written and recorded some songs" shit all over again in every interview.

Jeff isn't coming back because he is missing a little over a third of his arm. If it was just a little spider bite, he'd been back already. The lost a third of his arm, and most likely the ability to play guitar. It's pretty damned hard to pick up and play a guitar when you are missing most of your tricep and forearm. I'd be suprised if he could even strum a guitar at this point.

I would not blame Kerry for this, he founded Slayer and always worked hard in promoting the band. Don't forget that Jeff learned to play guitar from Kerry. Lombardo left the band for like five times... and Tom is talking bullshit about being religious. For me Kerry is the most important member of the band. Anyway this situation with members of the band not talking to each other is just embarrassing.

Maybe he's pissy because it was self inflicted, like from dirty needles, and they just keep it internal. Just sayin...they do always list it as an "Alleged spider bite", even in Wikipedia.

As for his statement, "But I mean, I've been playing all the guitars for years anyway — except for Jeff's leads."
Kerry doing everything but solos doesn't really hold up, because Jeff contributed six songs to the last album, 5 of those are with Araya or solo credit, and only one adds King into the mix, with the remainder of the songs (5) going to Kerry.
That's 50\50. That is not sitting on your ass.
I have trouble believing that Jeff just sent in demos and only did solos for his own songs....
Incidentally, Jeff stated almost identical remarks about Kerry back in the 90's, maybe they just like to bag on each other in the media, like bustin' your buddies balls long distance.

I see the point you're trying to make, but Kerry is only talking about the actual TRACKING, not the song/riff WRITING. It's actually VERY common in 2-guitar bands for 1 guy to do all the rhythms when recording. It sounds tighter and gets done faster, period.

And as far as the "then and now, who did the guitars," it's probably as simple as this: back then, Jeff was a tighter player, now Kerry is. Hanneman's live playing had already been a f'n mess for years before this spider bite incident, so I'm not surprised that KK played the lion's share of the rhythms on recent records.

Also, Jeff ain't coming back, so get used to it.

Kerry King seems like a real dick lately. I mean, "I play all the guitars anyway." Dude, do I have to pull out "Seasons In The Abyss"? Jeff wrote that one, and it smokes all of your stuff for over 20 years now. Also, if Kerry wasn't so insecure, he'd let Gary Holt record with him. I have a feeling he knows Gary's riffs would pound his own work. I'll still pick up anything Slayer releases, I just think Kerry needs to lower the ego a bit.

Slayer have had a rep going back to the late 80s for not liking each other much. This is no surprise. And Kerry's bluntness is sure to bring the hate.

But let's not forget something: there's responsibility on Jeff's part, too. he should be keeping his bandmates informed of his progress and he clearly isn't. I would have thought this experience would give him an album's worth of material and Kerry says he's produced nothing. Word I've heard is he isn't even trying to rehab his arm and Kerry is getting impatient. Who can blame him? It's been 2 years.

Kerry wants to get to work and Jeff is slacking. Far as I'm concerned, Kerry is in the right here, even if he isn't being too kind about it.

Oh, and I saw Kerry at NAMM signing autographs. He's lost a ton of weight. He used to be obese but he's dropped some serious poundage. I'm talking comparable to Brent Smith's weight loss.

1. There will be a new Slayer record this year.

2. Jeff Hanneman may not be contributing to the new album.

3. Gary Holt is not a member of Slayer and will not be playing guitar on the new record, but will be handling live duties for at least a little while.

4. Rick Rubin has better, more exciting things to do than contribute more of his time to Slayer.

5. Jimi Hendrix is still a fucking rock god.

6. World Painted Blood was a decent album, but the production was a bit weak and please don't do that again.

7. Reign in Blood was way better than South of Heaven, but South of Heaven was way, way, way, better than what people were listening to in 1988--Milli Vanilli.

8. Inlay cards for the new Slayer album should be made from papyrus, crushed human skulls and Elmer's Glue-All.

9. I'm thankful Slayer are still around.

10. Hope Jeff makes a full recovery and re-joins Slayer soon.

1) Writing music and recording it are two different things. Jeff might have written the songs but Kerry might have tracked them. Hetfield does that in Metallica. Mustaine did that very often in Megadeth. Ian does it in Anthrax. It's a lot easier and quicker when the solid rhythm guy does them all.

2) Jeff gets paid for all the songs he wrote and that the band plays onstage. He's entitled to almost 50% of the music and a bunch of lyrics too. I am not afraid he gets his cut.

3) Gary Holt is hired as a replacement, even is he's replacing Jeff for the next 10 years. He has no say in Slayer and never will. Kerry says 'you play that' and he does. Exodus is a crap paycheck so he's behaving properly in Slayer.

4) The band can't stand each other at this point because they had enough of each other when they used to tour in their cars, vans and tour bus. They probably spend more time together than they do with their wives and kids. Imagine eating, sleeping and cohabiting with your co-workers for 2 decades...even best friends needs a rest from each other.

5) Let's face it, Slayer don't have another 5 albums under their belts. No band from that era has. If they manage to get another 2-3 albums they'll manage to stay on tour for another 10 years, max. They'll have the whole best-of compilations and live video crap out and call it quits. The money will still be good from their catalogue sales.

6) As much as you like the music and do this for a living, when you go beyond yours 50s the whole Thrash Metal thing surely weights on you. You're no longer an angry kid with the same hunger for live gigs and the passion for the genre. Even Lemmy lost a lot of his fire and it's pretty normal.

With that said, if Jeff isn't coming back this band is dead for me. They've been dying a painful slow death for the last decade but that would ring the end for me.

You guys speculate a lot, it just shows that you're not playing in a band. Every band has its issues. Lack of communication, personal differences, artistic differences and whatnot... We could speculate so much more, in the end Slayer does what Slayer wants. Let me speculate too! Maybe Jeff is depressed, it can be hard mentally to be benched like this, pills and booze, who knows? Maybe the band is just waiting for him to get his shit together... No one ever interviewed Jeff, what's up with that? Maybe he just went batshit crazy and can't be talked with... I think Kerry is a cool guy, a metal legend. Get off his back.

Spider bites are not a direct cause of necrotizing faciitis.

NC is caused by bacteria that enters the body through a wound. It is remotely possible the spider bite caused the wound through which the bacteria entered his arm and did the damage, but the bacteria does not come from a spider.

What it does often come from is a dirty needle, which just happens to leave a tiny little hole that looks like a spider bite.

You do the math.

Kerry kind of comes off as a jerk in this interview, but I'm now kind of thinking either that there's a more serious issue with Jeff or that he's not wanting to come back. I really hope things work out, 'cause I like Jeff a little better as a song writer and recent Slayer is still better than 99% of the music being made.

got to say that deep in my heart this fucking asshole make us think he is running the show. no hanneman=no slayer, he is a key to the band and kerry should be proud and give more respect to jeff. as of dave and tom. they are the best on what they do. the very best. any guitar can do what kerry does, but no drums or vocals can be played as those two bastards

I think most of Slayer's recordings are pretty fucking good. I like Tom,s singing...well yelling! What he does sounds fucking cool anyway! I didn't care for his singing on the earlier recordings with that high pitched scream he used to do...uhg! Slayer is one of few bands I'll listen to anymore and it has to be loud as possible! Slayer is REAL Heavy Metal.

I still like Slayer but honestly, they have not really delivered a solid album in decades now. Yeah, there is the occasional song or two that are strong but it's not like it used to be. At least out of the "big 4" they are still the most aggressive band!

Slayer has a lot of classic material to choose from for a set list so I guess the new albums are not as important anymore. Thinking of Slayer live, it would be awesome if they did tour with some Death/Black/Thrash Metal bands this time around! I really hope it's not Marylin Manson ever again!

`I'll play all the guitars. But I mean, I've been playing all the guitars for years anyway — except for Jeff's leads´

Now we know the reality of this band, Jeff is more marginal than we really think. Yes they can cut by Kerry recording all the rhythm guitars, but Jeff should JUST contribute with some songs even if he is not 100%, he can compose but he has progressively diminished his input. One thing (recording) does not exclude the other (composing), the fishy thing is why Jeff is not yet contributing with new stuff. Strange.

Well when last time any of you had huge portion of your flesh/ muscle removed from your arm and then try to come back to playing guitar? I can imagine the rehab on that would be long and intense. If you count the number of songs on the last 4 albums (46 songs) Jeff has written and contributed to 30 of those are his. So for people to say he hasn't contributed to the band because Kerry said he does the guitar is flat out wrong.Sure maybe doing the recording but from I know Tom didnt record the bass on the early albums.. big deal. If Jeff wasn't able to come back it would a sad day for SLAYER but would it be over? NO. How many metal bands or any band out there have all the original members from when they started? Slim to none. The one member of SLAYER that cannot be replaced is Tom. He is SLAYER and without him it wouldn't be SLAYER. That would be like replacing Geddy Lee.. Just can't be done.

The last thing I want in the world is a Slayer album of nothing but Kerry King songs.

In recent years, he's had flashes of genius ("Cult" being a prime example) but more often than not his songs are the cheesiest, most boring shit imaginable.

Just announce Jeff's exit from the band so I can stop holding out hope already..

I love Slayer, they have always been my favorite band, but it seems that it is over.

Maybe Jeff can get in there for one last farewell tour. I'm pretty sure Tom has no intention of continuing in Slayer without Jeff.

Fact is the most expendable guy in Slayer is KK. His own songs are usually the weakest, his solos are turd, and he acts like an asshat to anyone unfortunate enough to be in earshot...no wonder the band don't talk to him after touring.
Cliche, but... No Jeff = no Slayer.

So let me guess..The next slayer is going to be the re-hashed same uninspring material they have been pushing since 94??? Seriously why take 4-5 yrs between cds? Any guy with minimal guitar experience can write better music then this band can!! I've said it before and I will say it gain, this band's best years are far behing them! The desire & fire left when they started making a little dough after 91!!

kerry king is a douche and his riffs are just banging hard on the guitar noisily and making up some tough guy/republitard idiot lyrics

Just wondering since I see Eddie Trunk interviewed Kerry. I went to a that metal show taping last year and Eddie hardly talked to the crowed. Left me thinking he's an ass. Stump the Trunk is all staged they give certain people in the crowd questions to ask. Anyone else get a bad vibe about him. (thinks he better than the average fan?)

I think most of us have seen the pics of Jeff's arm, he had some sort of injury, that's a given. As to how it happened, we can speculate, spider, drugs, etc. It is unfortunate a band has to communicate through Attorney's/Agents. Something is indeed shadey, but only leads us to speculate. Perhaps KK is sick of being asked, perhaps he tried communicating with Jeff and wasn't getting replys. Perhpas Jeff has other issues than the damage to his arm (sort of remember reading something about Jeff being too drunk for Kerry's liking when he went on stage). I do hope this gets resolved sooner than later. All being said, and not to beat a dead horse as I (and many others have)....
No Hanneman - No Slayer!!! Lay it to rest.

First of all, I said "like dirty needles". The bacteria enters through a wound that resembles a spider bite, but is found in a LOT of needle users. He could have had an infection and kept inserting int the same patch of skin, which would be just as bad as using a dirty needle.
Also, the ability to afford clean needles, and overcoming sheer human laziness are two different things.
