SLAYER Guitarist Says New Bands 'Have A Huge Sense Of Entitlement' - Jan. 27, 2013
Monster conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that is taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.

Asked if there was ever a moment when he first felt that his band had "made it," King said: "Probably the first time we got a tour bus. One thing that I notice a lot… I can't say all the new bands, but a lot of the younger generation, they seem to expect things. They expect to go on tour and have the tour bus that their heroes have. When we came up, we had a Camaro and a U-Haul. And then when we got 'big,' we had a van and a u-Haul. So when you got the tour bus, it was, like, 'Alright, something's gotta be working,' you know. But I never expected it. It was just, like, 'Alright, if we deserve it, when our time comes, fuck yeah, we got a tour bus. That's awesome.' And then you get a different perspective. But people…. I see it a lot at these NAMM shows, people come in and present themselves like, 'Don't you wanna give me some?' without being anybody, without earning shit. And it wasn't like that when I grew up … I think they have a huge sense of entitlement."

Regarding what keeps him going more than 30 years since SLAYER's inception, King said: "Shows are awesome; I love shows. And you know, when you make up new stuff, you're in quest of the perfect riff. I don't know if it's been written yet, and I may never know, but you're always making up new stuff and re-impressing yourself and re-energizing yourself, making up things that are, for myself, so SLAYER. And it's, like, 'How did we never write this before?' And that's fun."

King, Chilean-born bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo are continuing to play shows with EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt, who has been filling in for SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman for two years while Jeff recovers from contracting necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite.

SLAYER last year entered the studio to record two new songs with producer Greg Fidelman for a possible EP release.

In a summer 2012 interview with "Metal Zone" host Nikki Blakk of the San Francisco, California radio station 107.7 The Bone, King was asked whether Hanneman is contributing to the songwriting process for the new album. "On the last record [2009's 'World Painted Blood'], it was kind of, like, [split] down the middle [between me and Jeff]. On the records prior, it was mostly me. This one's been all me so far," he said. "He's welcome to contribute. It's just a matter of him [putting] something [together] and getting it to us."

"Quest of the perfect riff" my ass. It would seem he's already found his, since he's been recording the same one riff since Reign, and it was written by Jeff in the first place.

Ummm Kerry, that is rampant in everything not just music these days. Work? What is that is most peoples mentality these days. Someone else should have to work and then give me part of it. Class envy pushed by out own government is not the beginning of this mindset but they are pushing it along.

I read quotes from King about the song writing - who wrote what shit and, it makes me sad to think King is coming off almost dismissive of Hanneman - who I think has written some of the best Slayer riffs.

As time goes on and, with King's comments about Hanneman, it seems like he (Jeff Hanneman) will not be returning to Slayer. That is just a bummer think about.

Holt is a perfect fit in Slayer, but if he is able to, I woukld much rather Jeff return - even if it is true that Kerry has written the bulk of the material. The Hanneman riffage is well worth him being a part of the band.

I just gave Megadeth's Thirteen a spin for the first time in a while. It is a damn good album! The last 4 Megadeth records since Mustaine's return have all been better than Death Magnetic. Say what you will about Mustaine, but he has been putting out quality music consistently.

It's not just bands! Pretty much ANYONE born after 1980 has a sense of entitlement: "What are you gonna do for me and little do I have to work for it?" seems to be the mantra. Work ethic? Forget about it.

where did this "entitlement" begin?
---
everything was cool//then jfk got shot--and they started trying to bring in u.n. infiltrators to take over america

then they started pbs--to start to brainwash kids into being communist slaves--there was an overall promotion of alot of communist and "hippie cult" type shit

which brings us to the muppets--if you go to sharon osbourne's facebook right now--in her avatar picture--=she is clutching a kermit the frog puppet

also when ozzy osbourne got to meet the queen of england---they made sure in all the media pics of the "bowing"--that there was a kermit the frog puppet behind the queen in the pic

as a signal to all the "cultists" that ozzy was still down with the media/libtard/pro u.n. atheistic "revolution"
----
"witches turning people into frogs"---this is an actual "spell" --where in todays language it would be a "media campaign"

what they do is take the "tipharet" spot in the kabbalah tree of life diagram---which is the royal "half earth/half divine" spot that is usually symbolized by a king

and then replace it with a "frog"---(half water/half air")---this is a significant step down-0--then you promote this perspective-in the nation or whatever---and if the people dont stand up to it

you have a nation of slaves/frogs
---
people felt entitled that if they joined a metal band they would get their ass kissed---cuz in the media --there was a promotion of anyone metal--based on the above agenda---

which is kind of less organized and cultish---since 911 and the death of jim henson
---
but its still there---they just got done running alot of stories in the msm blaming the "elmo" puppeteer of kid rape---

they then disclaimed it---but the "idea" is now planted in the mind of the public------classic "black magic"--manipulation---
---
pbs is using kabbalah in its marketing and programming--
-=-
this is against the constitution---as tax payer funded "religion" is illegal

911 was an inside job----arrest pbs

Agree with Kerry. He's often a loudmouth and sure likes to talk shit every now and then, but I sure like him a lot more than some self-absorbed narcissist rockstar cunt (i.e. Lars Ulrich).

When I was young I would've killed someone for 16 bucks an hour. It seems like now we all just pay more taxes so people that are too lazy or stupid to work don't have to.

You don't pay more taxes. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. If you're a millionaire you've been paying less taxes Since Reagan took office, even during the increase of the Clinton years. Since then, you've been paying even less. If you're not a millionaire, you're still paying less. Either way, you're paying less and only idiots who believe shit they're told from Teabaggers and Neo-Cons think that they're actually paying more taxes to support the lazy than they were before.

A lot of those musicians thinks they earned the right to act like dicks because they spent 10 years in a van and a trailer before they got big. Some bands manage to get pass this and they should be glad they did. Who enjoys touring in a van? Credits goes to the bands doing it and leveling up someday. Bands still living in their vans after 20 years are delusional and should consider a proper job.

Slayer earned its credibility because they wrote great and memorable riffs while pairing them with strong lyrical and visual imagery, not because they toured in a camaro and slept on friends floors for years.

Name ONE "entitlement" Obama or anyone recently has given anybody. Don't say health care - the "individual mandate", uh, MANDATES that you pay your own way! Bush's Medicare Part D, perhaps? Why wasn't anybody whining about "old people takers" then?

"Entitlement programs" = nothing new. Past presidents have given tax cuts without doing anything about increasing population and life expectancy.

So go ahead, one entitlement. Anybody?

And wonder who pissed Kerry off at NAMM?

Say what you want about Kerry King, but when it comes to a subject like this, Kerry has earned the right to say whatever the fuck he wants! When Slayer first began, not only were they touring in a U-Haul and Tom's Camaro (as mentioned by Kerry), but Metal Blade at the time was still the record label equivalent of a mom-and-pop shop at the time their first 2 albums came out. On top of that, the first album had to be financed by the band themselves...namely Tom's paychecks as a respiratory therapist along with money borrowed from Kerry's father, since Metal Blade had no budget of their own to pay for the album!

Younger fans don't even see the kind of work their predecessors had to do just to get where they are today. All they see is the stars, and they get these grand illusions about being rock stars, and how they're gonna be filthy rich like their idols (and in some cases, they don't even realize that their idols may not even be as wealthy as they thought), and then when they finally do get that opportunity and find out that they DON'T get what they dreamed of, they whine and cry about it! Kerry knew damn well what it took to get where he is today, and it's about time the younger bands understand the same thing!

Its not just young bands buy young people in general who seem to have a sense of entitlement. I see it all over. In work, in sports, everywhere. Unfortunately too many people grew up really believing that they were special like their moms told them while they were growing up.

Hell Awaits riff anyone? Damn near perfect if you ask me. And yes, most kids in their twenties have a huge sense of entitlement and seriously lack social skills once thrust out from behind their computers. It's sad, really; a lot of these guys have zero personality because it seems they've never actually been outside or spoken to people consistently face to face (not skype to skype). In my day, you met women by going out and approaching them. Now it's all texting, e-mails and pathetic date websites. Go outside and grow a sack and walk up to those women, goddamnit
