ANTHRAX Guitarist Clarifies Comments About Music Industry Collapse - Jan. 26, 2013
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian says that when he stated in a recent interview that "nothing would make [him] happier" than to see the entire music industry collapsing, he wasn't referring to some of the longest-running independent labels who have supported underground metal music for the past three decades.

Speaking to Australia's Loud magazine, Ian was asked for his take on the future of the music industry. "I don't even know — I don't care; I have no idea," he replied. "I really don't give a shit about the industry. If anything, nothing would make me happier than… other than some of the good people who actually have jobs that would be hurting if they lost their gigs. But as far as I'm concerned, I can only hope that the whole industry collapses and has to start over, or figure out something else, because I really have nothing good to say about the record industry."

He continued: "When you think about the billions and billions of dollars that labels ripped off from bands from the 1940s all the way through to the 1990s, and now they complain about nobody buys records anymore. Well, whose fault is that, you know? These companies, corporations and individuals literally stole billions of dollars and you've got artists, bands who no longer exist and are literally like, a step away from being homeless, or living in assisted-living places, whatever it is. But you don't see most musicians retiring and living out the rest of their lives because they got some millions and millions of dollars' cash settlement, just to leave a record label. The whole fucking thing is insanity, the way record labels were run. Especially in the '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s when bands were really getting ripped off."

In series of tweets last night (Friday, January 25), Ian elaborated on his comments, writing: "Just to clarify what I said about the music industry collapsing in an interview recently… I'm not talking about independent labels like Megaforce, Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, etc. etc. These labels have changed the business and have found models that work and they are not only fair to the bands they sign, they actually will work at developing a band the way it used to be done when we first started. The majors are no place for rock/metal anymore and if you're a huge band, you're better off doing it yourself. That's the point I was making."

Ian should know that whenever you throw crap at someone or something, the media will grasp it and run with it as long as they can. They don't care for positive or constructive ideas, just the crap.

I guess that he's in damage control mode after Nuclear Blast rang him and ask what the hell he meant with that...

Ah, the old days of metal.. when it was about pure unadulterated anger, rebellion, middle fingers, FUs; where anyone like Riotass would have been ran out out of town in his tutu. Now it's all about being politically correct, conformity, posing. Sad world we live in.

Always lots of people ready to take things that people say and change them and or whatever, i agree with scott, the big companies have cheated millions out of bands and they are responsible for much of the crap thats popular today, but also the simpler and stupid songs are the more popular they are. But for statarters they should lower the price of albums

Fuck the major labels. I don't feel sorry for any of them. For years they ripped off bands and fans by charging obscene amounts of money for albums that only had a few good songs. Kharma is coming to bite them in the ass and they deserve what they're getting now.

Had you dumb fucks embraced things like Napster when they came out you wouldn't be in this situation now because you could have found a way for new technology to work with your business model. Now you guys are trying to catch up but you've already been left behind.

Good riddance record labels.

the indies are, for the most part, no better than the majors. sure, they may care about the 'music' but they still screw over bands left and right. how many of the bands we collectively like have been screwed by Century Media?! he should have stuck to his guns, cause everything he said was correct. even when this guy does the right thing he screws it up!

... it happens in all businesses, and you either adapt or die.

As much as we like to talk about "art" there is a business here, and you have to treat is as such. Everyone makes fun of Metallica, KISS, Sammy Hagar, etc. but they were smart enough to keep control of their business, work hard, fight the right battles and they're sitting pretty. The bands that put faith in their record labels to do right by them are the ones wondering where all the money is today.

with Wronginfo. There are many bands that have gone through the 60, 70, 80, and 90s music business and have come out the other end in pretty good condition. Despite what you might feel, peple like Gene Simmons was smart, right from the start. He took control of the business end of the music business and ensured that he and his band made money.

Look at Def Leppard. No idea that there contract did not alow them to make money off their own songs and must now rerecord allof their "hits" note for note so they can gain back some sort of control.

I'm sorry, but while I agree that the "business" was out for themselves, ignorance is no excuss. Bands like Rush, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Metallica took control of their music and are living very well.

do the true Metalheads a favor, & stop listening to metal!

It was obvious what & who he was speaking of.

Everyday these stories are less about being a Metal fan & more about holding your little hands so you don't get offended.

For Fucksakes, if you're offended just Fucking Stop, this ain't the music for you!

Maybe Metal needs a little less of this...

When apple came out with iTunes, and Sony music simply laughed at them because Sony thought they were invincible. It didn't take them long to jump on the bandwagon and try to compete at the same level.
Scott does have valid point; however, record labels didn't force you get drunk and not read contracts properly before you sign them.
When thrash acts we love were playing clubs in 1986,Metallica was playing Castle Donington already all due to Lars Ulrich and his smart management. It is this very quality of his why he is also being called douche.
Of all people Dave Mustaine has a great quote about how record labels dictates music:
" for Megadeth to succeed; 400 others went down the drain."
Record labels should have been the vessel to put great music to masses; as you do so, money comes naturally as opposed to trying to sign the "next big thing" , or just because one band has a break through like Nirvana and agents scorch the whole town of Seattle like they did back then to cash out on bands supposedly sound like Nirvana.
Bottom line; music business used to be run by people who "understood" music; not by some hotshot who has degree in Ivy League supports an Armani suit.

This guy is the biggest pile of crap in the history of 'thrash' metal. He plays in that lame band The Damned Things with fallout boy, he changes his look every other album to conform. He is a total sell out. Now that his career is almost over (is only continuing on because Joey Belladonna bailed him out) he starts to say shit about the music industry etc.

Guys as fake as they come.

The last band I can recall being developed by a major label would be Pantera.

With each release of an album, the tours became bigger. These are the tours I recall as they were developing their spot in the metal world.

CFH - Toured with Exodus and Suicidal on a three band club bill as the opener.
VDoP - Went out with Skid Row as support in mid-sized venues
FBD - Well we know what occurred there. The band debuted at Number One and the rest was Metal History.

it's funny to read douche bags on here saying Scott is "as fake as they come"

dude was on the forefront of the thrash scene since the early 80's ...toured in vans, slept on floors, etc.....banded together with other top bands of the scene to help create an important genre in metal

and losers are calling him out as fake, this guy was out there doing it while your mom was in the backseat getting it on with some dude before she met your dad
