MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Talks New Album, Upcoming GIGANTOUR And Signing With New Record Label - Jan. 24, 2013
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine was on hand yesterday (Wednesday, January 23) at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, to show off his new Dean double-neck guitar.

Originally a one-off which was built for Dave to play at the "Big Four" shows, the guitar will go into full production this year.

A six-minute video interview with Mustaine conducted by VintageRock.com after yesterday's press conference can be seen below.

On what the artwork on his new guitar represents:

Mustaine: "It's basically the battle of good and evil. I think a lot of people misinterpret heavy metal fans as all of us being lost and deranged and being drug addicts and alcoholics and being satanic and stuff like that. I mean, we all have a little bit of darkness in us. But as far as the battle of good and evil, that's something that everybody encounters every day. The stop sign: do I roll through it or do I stop?

"The guy that did this artwork is a guy named John Lorenzi. He's done a lot of artwork with us in the past. When you tell somebody something and they have the vision to be able to do it without you having to go, 'OK, dude, listen…' I mean, there's a lot of really great artists out there, but sometimes their vision, it doesn't really line up with what the artists' visions are, and I think we've been really fortunate with him.

"We're in the studio right now doing a new record, and we were just talking about the artwork for the new record. It's not gonna be an illustration; it's actually a think that we're naming the record after. So we're trying to figure out how to use illustration in that. But if it's something that looks cooler when you take a picture of it, why draw it?"

On MEGADETH's current record-company situation following the band's split with Roadrunner Records:

Mustaine: "We're with a great new label. We're doing a press release about it soon. I can't say who it is; I'd love to tell you who it is. But we're not with Roadrunner anymore. That was some good years for us there, and we really look back with great fondness on our times with Roadrunner. But the excitement level for us right now is just insane."

On MEGADETH's touring plans:

Mustaine: "Yeah, we've got some dates this summer with [IRON] MAIDEN over in Spain, Italy and France and some headlining shows in the U.K. and we're coming back to the States and doing some concerts here. And we've got some stuff lined up at the end of the year with Gigantour — not only in here in the States, but also down in South America. We've got some really interesting lineups for that. Most people would look at the lineup and they would think, like, 'Dave's not gonna tolerate your crap at all.' Because there's a couple of people that we have that are on the lineup — and we're hoping for the best — but they're notorious bad boys. But when people grow up, they kind of grow up; they don't just grow old. And we're hoping that the music is gonna be the most important thing so that the fans will get what they want. Because it's undoubtedly… The people that we have, so far, as far as we know, for Gigantour, they've got great music. We're really looking forward to that.

On MEGADETH's upcoming album

Mustaine: "We're almost done with it. We've been doing it with [producer] Johnny K, doing it down in San Diego where I live. And he's gonna be mixing it out in Chicago at his studio out there. You know, it's really incredible the way… Last night, [MEGADETH bassist] David Ellefson — he'll probably not appreciate me telling this story — but he was sitting in a chair and his hand was hanging over the side of the chair, and I said, 'What's the matter?' And he goes, like, 'Man, I haven't played this much in a long time.' And I was, like, 'Good.' So that was really exciting for me, 'cause David, he's a monster on bass guitar, and for him to be saying stuff like that and just showing that he's a litte tired because there's so much activity with the songs, I think the fans are really gonna respond to that."

Dave...been a long time fan since So Far, So Good, So What and have bought every album except Risk. I'm done with you and your crazy rants and will not be buying the new album or seeing you on tour. I know I'm not the only one.

Years and years of heavy hardcore drug use along with alcoholism will destroy your mind. I gave up when he gave us Youthanasia. I still rock the old school shit though. Listening to those songs reminds me of the cool Dave instead of the bitter, right-wing jesus freak douche he is today.

If you gave up on Megadeth when he gave us Youthanasia, you and I are on the same boat. Back then I threw Deth in the same shit hole where I had thrown Tallica a couple of years prior. But United Abominations and Endgame are really good Deth albums. Do yourself a favor and listen to them. Even the lyrics in UA are killer, some songs bashing the government (Bush was in office) will make you forget his latest right wing BS.

Problem is lyrics have always been a part of Megadeth's personality as band. Dave used to be able to write great songs about the world, war and politics in general, now he just rambles all of his specific views into the songs, it's annoying and out of place.

I thought 13 was a bit lacklustre but I did really enjoy the three before. Dave is a bit of a nutjob and I don't agree with any of his politics but if the music's good I'll listen.

Delusional Dave thinks he's actually going to sell more copies on a new label. It was fucking hilarious watching him blame Roadrunner for Endgame's sales, which were actually great for a thrash album in the modern age. He even said he wants to top Billboard, he has no fucking perspective.

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Talks Taking out Trash, New Album, Farting, James Hetfield Jan. 24, 2013

"We're recording this shitty new album and we took some time off today, so I took a dump." he said.

"I also took out the trash. While I was on the shitter, I wrote another song for the album. It's called Chemtrails... OH YEAH, I heard Obama and Ted Negunt dodged the draft together. Aliens, man."

When asked how the new Megadeth album will sound...

"Like shit! We're going for "Risk" meets Chumbawamba"

When asked about the upcoming tour...

"Oh, we're going to be doing this whole Christmas thing. I think it's important to celebrate his birthday all year long, and I've been growing my beard out for my Santa/Jesus stage persona. There's actually six songs on the new record that I guess you could say are Christmas songs."

'the mighty Maiden would stoop so low'

Are you fucking serious?!?! I'd be delighted to see Maiden tour with a band as good as Megadeth, they usually take out appalling supports. I've seen them with such horseshit as Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold and Funeral for a Friend in recent years!

I read the comments first then I watched the video. From the shit I read I was expecting Dave to be spouting off at the mouth. Upon seeing this interview he was well spoken and never veered off into a "rant" at all. It just goes to show you how delusional some of you are, ready and poised to attack or belittle someone based on ideas that have no foundation at all. There's truth to the notion that we tend to dislike things in people that we are guilty of ourselves. For the rest of us, let us appreciate a truly exceptional musician regardless of his personal beliefs and politics. Rock on Dave.

He can't sing anymore, can't play anymore and has been making shitty albums for a while now. The only reason he is trying to sound nice to anybody is because his last club tour did not sell out , and his last album did not sell as much as Roadrunner wanted it to sell. He is simply shitting his pants that the gravy train is ending, and nobody feels sorry for him because he acts like a complete douche. FACT.

Listened to Th1rt3en again recently, it's not as bad as I remember it being. I actually enjoyed a good handful of the songs. Sudden Death in particular, that song kind of rules.

... was done way too quick.
Therefore all the remakes and usage of leftovers. That hurt that album.
I really like Sudden Death, Never Dead and Black Swan.
Also PE No1, though I see why many people don't.

The lyrics iny »Whose lfe... « make me cringe. They sound like 50 year old Davy still shouting at his parents for not letting him wear his jeans.

Hope the new one is good and lets you forget about his recent ramblings.
