MEGADETH: 10 Songs Tracked For New Album So Far - Jan. 24, 2013
MEGADETH recently resumed work on its fourteenth studio album with producer Johnny K (full name: John Karkazis), who has previously worked with DISTURBED, SEVENDUST, MACHINE HEAD and STAIND. The CD is currently being recorded at MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California for an early 2013 release via an as-yet-undisclosed label following the band's recent split with Roadrunner Records.

In a new posting on Facebook, MEGADETH states: "David [Mustaine, guitar/vocals] and Shawn [Drover, drums] have tracked 10 songs for our new album so far, and we are doing the last track tonight. Check it out!"

Mustaine previously told NME about the direction of MEGADETH's new material, "Some of it's a little darker, some of it's a little faster. Being in this position right now, not knowing where we're gonna go or what we're gonna do, it's kind of like the world's ours to do what we want. Are we gonna go back to the speed and thrash metal roots that made us who we are? Are we gonna experiment and rely on the melody that we've discovered in MEGADETH songs?"

Mustaine also spoke about how he likes to keep MEGADETH's music more melodic than that of most thrash bands. "We've tried to do that in MEGADETH, have a little melody so that it's not just the same old grinding music like everybody else has," he said. "We're just happy to get going and get to the studio."

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was also recorded at Vic's Garage.

"TH1RT3EN" sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD marked the recorded return of bassist David Ellefson who was part of the band's classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band's legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with MEGADETH in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This was the first time Ellefson has played on a MEGADETH record since 2002's "Rude Awakening".

I'm hoping it's an improvement from the last effort. Endgame was a solid record and turn in the right direction, then Thirteen kinda disappointed.

What are we going to get here?

Endgame was great.
13 was terrible.

I'm worried......

Megadeth were one of my favourite bands growing up, but i can't say i listen to anything past "Youthanasia" with any kind of regularity now.

they haven't had a solid, listen through all the tracks, classic album in nearly 20 years - i suspect this new album will be no different.

every great band has a finite amount of great releases - just look at the other big 4 bands - 5/6 solid classic albums and the rest is just rehashed sounds and bad ideas...

Same here. Countdown was ok, it had its moments, but way to radio friendly. After that, I never bought another MD album again. I had low expectations after Countdown, and when I heard that god awful Train Of Consequences, the band lost me. There's been a few songs from them over the years that I love like Sleepwalker, Blackmail the Universe, Black Curtains, Of Mice and Men, but I don't think I could make a full albums worth of material from Countdown to 13.

And I totally feel the same way about not being able to listen to a full album anymore. I could still listen to the first 4 from start to finish.

Should not be acceptable from this band.

I never desire to listen to the last 3 or 4 albums from this band.

Yeah but now its the same old melodic music that has been on the last 20 years of Megadeth albums.

of the so-called 'big four', megadeth is the only band who delivers new records without long breaks.. megadeth is the motörhead of the big four..

You're right, I'll give Megadeth that.
Even with Dave's arm injury years ago, that didn't cause a huge break in between albums.

The catalog is pretty fucking solid for having so many studio albums. Even some of the newer material is pretty fucking good. Better than most. The albums are too fucking long. 10 songs are perfect. Nobody has an attention span any longer to listen to albums. That's why you hear all the people who disregard an album. Shit, I have to plan ahead to watch a fucking movie. I always thought the material has been good and there has been some heavy ass shit. Short and Sweet! The heavier the better.

I agree with all the comments about not listening to anything past Countdown.
Then I heard Endgame one day, can't remember why and I really got into it. It turned me back on to them and United Abominations which is a decent album and one of their best sonically.
Thirteen however was utter shit and Dave really over hyped it saying it could be one of their best ever, probably why he's being more tight lipped about this one.
