Study: Listening To Heavy Metal Is A Sign Of Teenage Delinquency - Jan. 22, 2013
According to the Toronto Star, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics is the ?rst to provide evidence that an early preference for different types of noisy, rebellious, nonmainstream music genres is a strong predictor of concurrent and later minor delinquency.

"We were stunned ourselves," said Dr. Tom Ter Bogt of Utrecht University in the Netherlands said. "We checked it over and over again."

Research showed that "early preferences are more important predictors of later delinquency compared with developing preferences for deviant music (i.e., increases in liking of nonmainstream music across adolescence did not indicate more delinquency at age 16). Speci?cally, adolescents with a strong early preference for music types that have been labeled as deviant (hip-hop, heavy metal, gothic, punk, and techno/hardhouse) were more engaged in minor delinquency in late adolescence."

Ter Bogt told the Toronto Star: "What we believe happens if you have this taste for rebellious music, noisy music, it brings you in contact with other kids with the same type of music taste and you are contaminated by the behaviour in that group.

"If you listen to classical music or jazz, overall these kids tend to behave far less dramatically."

He added: "I would suggest to parents if your 12-year-old child listens to very, very noisy music, rebellious music, be aware of what kinds of friends he or she brings to the house."

A "scientist" named Diederik Stapel published a paper on a study into the relation between agression and meat consupmption for which he had made up study data, and was rightfully disgraced, so studies like it like this one are not to be taken seriously.

I started being interested in all things heavy metal when I was just below 10 years old, at the beginning of the 4th grade. Heavy Metal has since become an essential part of my life and my whole persona. Heavy Metal is a source of power and imagination, a sense of individuality and paving one's own path regardless of what other people say, a whole spectrum of emotions, the freedom of thought and opinion, having a great fucking time alone and with your friends. Heavy Metal is a sign of independence and strength at all times, in every conceivable place, in every fathomable company, in whatever situation this world throws against us. Heavy Metal is a sign that keeps us going through this life. It's like a beacon, a shining star that never goes out.

Dr. Tom Ter Bogt: I let you listen or not to listen anything without labelling you as anything. Please, fuck off and stay fucked off. Shove that study as far up in your ass as possible and zip it. Let us be left alone with our music, it's our way of life, it's our whole fucking life!

yeah! Cain was listening to Slayer when he offed his brother Abel. Everytime I listen to Chimaera, I break into my friends homes and steal everything.

The problem is there has always been crime and they're will always be people blaming it on genres that they don't like. The emergence of rap was the 90's target and metal has always flown in and out of the radar. CNN reported last year that Hatebreed was a racist band without even doing any research. We deal with this crap beacause we don't give a crap what conservative media thinks.

It's actually delinquents who are drawn to heavy metal music and not heavy metal music that's turning teens to delinquents. That is some lazy scientific research when you devise that heavy metal and other kinds of rebellious music leads to delinquents when you observe a lot of delinquents listening to those genres.

I like how everyone is bashing this guy like he's villifying aggressive music - he isn't. He's just presenting the results of a study.

I am a big metalhead, and have been all my life, and I wasn't a delinquent. I hung out with the delinquents, just like the study said could happen, but my parents taught me right from wrong.

That's really what the bottom line is here. It doesn't matter what kind of music you listen to - if parenting is a strong enough positive influence in your life, you'll know what to do and what not to do.

...meanwhile, rap is the soundtrack to the gangsta and gang banger culture...

I became a metalhead in high school, and looked the part. Long hair and black metal t-shirts, denim jacket with patches, etc. But I was in the top 5% in my class, never got in trouble, or never did drugs, imagine that.
But if one were to use this site's base as a barometer, it surely wouldn't do the image of the average metal fan any favors, that's for sure.

You can see it in WWII results. Maybe a soldier killed someone but doctors did it worse they threated with humans like rats in labs. So we have to say doctors are bad and you shouldnt let your kid to study medicine? Most of doctors are like this you know! its the truth. Human being needs much more time in revolution to be better and better. We have to accept what we are, anyone watched Breaking Bad? hey doctor have you watched Dexter? Doctor to be an actor is much worse!!! Or watching TV?!! these ppl have a lot of time to make ppl laugh at them, I dont know which catholic church pays them to research such a bullshit stuff. Yeah its obvious that there are some criminal people listen to metal music as Hitler was listening to Richard Wagner! So fucking what? stupid stupid

Well, it may stand to reason that kids that like rebellious music are more likely to be delinquents. OK, I can see that. That being said, isn't knowing who your kids are bringing into the house and hanging with a good idea regardless of music that they listen to?
And fact of the matter is, some stuff needs rebelling against. I always felt like as long as I wasn't hurting myself or someone else it was OK to rebel.
We make our own decisions in life and our kids only do what we let them get away with, music tastes be damned.
I certainly never broke the law or got into trouble and then tried to pin it on peer pressure or music. My folks would have laughed at me and then kicked me off the planet.
Metal is what you make of it, positive and negative.

Additionally, I am sure that the guys who shot up V Tech, Columbine, the theater in Colorado, and the elementary school in Connecticut were all listening to Spinal Tap while they were busy in their heinous plots.

Funny you bring up Columbine. I remember the media coverage like it was yesterday. It was a scapegoatfest of epic proportions. Among the biggest scapegoats was Marilyn Manson...turns out the media had that one wrong from the very start, as it was later discovered that Klebold and Harris did not even like Manson to begin with (according to Manson, himself, the two thought he was a sellout). I also heard the Virginia Tech shooting was blamed on GNR's "Mr Brownstone", which is even more stupid than blaming Manson for Columbine. I hate to play the role of "Captain Obvious" here, but last time I checked, the word "Brownstone" is a slang term for heroin (which GNR was notorious for abusing in their heyday), so I fail to understand the point in blaming a song about heroin for a school shooting...maybe because there is nothing to understand about something that just doesn't make any sense.

I'm now in the middle of my eighth year teaching high school. Unless grading papers and making lesson plans are deviant activities, I think I'm basically OK.

Mind you, this guy takes everything music related backwards. He calls himself a 'pop professor' and also links certain characteristics to music. People who listen to jazz are well organized, instead of saying people who are well organized listen to jazz.

It gets better, a couple of years ago he had another study which said 'the music that you listen to at age 16 defines your music taste for the rest of your life' which meant 'rock fans might listen to gothic' and 'electro fans might listen to dubstep' but moving in between genres is unlikely. Then he went on to say he owns a lot of albums in a lot of different genres.

Also, this guy doesn't publish his figures publicly. I'm sure the study can be re-enacted, it being in a magazine and all, but without figures (how many people were researched) and facts (for how long, where, demographics) this all means very little.

PS. He also said Hip Hop was more likely to cause teens behaving badly.

FACT: The actions of the Manson Family were influenced by a song on the White Album called "Helter Skelter"...this according to the admission of Charles Manson, himself! By the logic of this same professor doing this "study" on metal and its "impact" on "teenage behavior", The Beatles are responsible for the death of Sharon Tate, yet the same people slamming genres like metal and rap for their "violent content" and "influencing delinquent behavior" IGNORE the fact that the Manson Family's actions were admittedly influenced by The Beatles! Gee, I wonder why nobody takes THAT at face value!

I was a delinquent as a teenager, as were all of my friends- even all of the girls I knew were hellraisers. I eventually outgrew it & am now a normal, boring, responsible adult. Still, twenty years later, my old friends & I still reminisce about those days & have a good laugh about it.
