JASON NEWSTED Talks To NIKKI SIXX About His Decision To Leave METALLICA (Audio) - Jan. 21, 2013
Former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist and current NEWSTED frontman Jason Newsted made an in-studio appearance last week on the "Sixx Sense" radio show hosted by MÖTLEY CRÜE/SIXX: A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx.

A three-minute audio clip in which Newsted talks to Sixx about his decision to leave METALLICA can be streamed below.

According to MTV, Newsted quit METALLICA in February 2001 for several reasons, including his desire to play more of a creative role. He also felt the band had lost its focus and was spending too much time involved in litigation and political rhetoric. And finally, he needed time off to recover from neck and back injuries he sustained banging his head every night onstage.

Newsted last performed with METALLICA in December 2011 at all four intimate shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the band's week-long celebration of its 30th anniversary as a group for fan club members only.

"Metal", the debut EP from NEWSTED, sold around 6,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 62 on The Billboard 200 chart.

"Metal" was released on January 8 exclusively via iTunes. The EP was made available as a physical CD on January 15.

Jason Newsted should teach Nikki Sixx how to play bass.

Nikki Sixx isn't a great bassist but Newsted shouldn't teach anyone! Hes good but not that good. Sixx is a good bassist.

Nikki & Jason talked about the BS that Nikki spewed back in the early 90's about Metallica & how they wouldn't be around in X number of years? But at least he asked a relevant question.

wow, cutting edge story about something that happened almost 15 years ago.

Next up let's rehash Mustaine getting kicked out of Metallica for the 50 thousandth time. "What no second chances?"

Yawn.

they sure as hell weren't going to listen to Jason. I love how Hetfield was such a dick, and now he's all nicey nice. Jason could have used some of that back then. He deserved more respect. I will always dig Metallica for crushing everything in their path, but will always hate them for how they treated Jason. Good luck Jason! I will chill out on the hating,I'm just saying.

Great EP that just came out. Hope a tour happens next. Also, it would be awesome if Jason jammed on stage w/ Metallica again on this year's Orion festival.

It starts a conversation, it's called a human interest story.
I like Jason's work in MetallicA. I think he really shined on the 2 LOAD CD's.

Jason got all the respect he deserved in Metallica. Do you think the guys who played in a band with him all those years were missing something? He was treated how he was treated for a reason.

It would have been more interesting if they talked about how he wanted to come back, but was rejected. It's a bit of info about that in the extra material on the Some kind of monster-dvd.

Never heard the story quite like that, but it makes sense, given St. Anger and SKOM. Well, and the rest of the work Metallica has done since then. James cleaned up, realizing what he had lost (Jason) and what else was at stake (his marriage). Unfortunately, he's a bit too happy-go-lucky nowadays to write anything fluid.

Being a Newsted fan through the years, especially when he was the last metal guy in Metallica, it was kinda sad to see that his post-Metallica career didn't amount to much ... metal.

He kinda ruined Voivod by turning them more towards pop rock/ hard rock, althought the productions were good...didn't release anything interesting with any other band until now and this is kinda thrashy effort which is cool, but just too simplistic.

In Metallica he might've not gotten as much input but he got some good riffs in, if I remember right, "Friend of Misery" was his. I still miss that Metallica tightness with him on bass which is still somewhat lost with Trujillo, who overall is probably the better musician but doesn't have that tight right hand.... apples and oranges I know (pick vs fingers) but still...Metallica sounded a lot more aggressive with Jason on the older stuff.

I surprized Jason stayed with Metallica as long he did. Jamez and the gang hazed, tormented never respected Jason from day one to the final day.

Can't wait for Jason to write a book.

Long Live Echo Brain.

The fact that he just wanted a year off and they said no and then wanted to come back and they said no again tells me all I need to know about them as human beings. Fuck them!!

It's not like Newsted quit MetallicA and drove to the nearest radio station to tell his story. He released a very non-metal project and that crappy t.v. show and he never really talked about MetallicA. Now he's (finally) putting out a metal project. What the hell questions do you think he's going to be asked?!? He's not exploiting his former situation and he's obviously good with the members of MetallicA including Trujillo. Like someone said above, it's a talking point. People on here just have to hate on everything.

I realize that he was in Voivod. He was in Ozzy's band too. My point wasn't to recap his career, it's just making a point that he isn't using MetallicA to sell his new band. Yet people still choose to comment in that direction.

He left because he knew that St Anger was crap -- he didn't want to be associated with that album --- good move in my opinion... At least Metallica put out death magnetic after that -- a pretty good album.....

The funniest part is that he wanted a year off and James and Lars didn't want to, so he quit, and it took the douche-nozzles longer than a year to replace him.

Also, fuck him and his year off! I guarantee, in a typical year, he still had more time off than most people making a fraction of what he made.
