Former THREE DAYS GRACE Singer: 'The Music Really Wasn't Coming From The Heart' - Jan. 18, 2013
According to The Pulse Of Radio, former THREE DAYS GRACE singer Adam Gontier has spoken out about his reasons for leaving the band he co-founded after 20 years together. The original announcement by the band and his follow-up statement seemed to have conflicting views regarding Gontier's health and his motivations, so The Pulse Of Radio asked him why he made this move now. "For me, I think the thing that broke the camel's back was, I had enough of the money coming before the music," he said. "It's not perfect timing, but it had to be done, you know. For the sake of my own mental health and well-being, I had to do it."

Gontier elaborated on what went wrong for him after playing in THREE DAYS GRACE for two decades. "You know, the music really wasn't coming from the heart," he said. "I can say that on the record 'Transit Of Venus', there's maybe one or two songs that actually do come from my heart, but a lot of songs have been written just for radio and for fans, you know, to relate to. Quite a bit of it just adds up to the fakeness of the whole industry and how you're writing hits for other people and not yourself — and that's really what the band was, has been all about."

THREE DAYS GRACE announced Gontier's departure from the group earlier this week, although he officially resigned on December 21.

The band claims that he told them he was leaving through a letter from his lawyer, with no personal discussion or contact between Gontier and his bandmates.

THREE DAYS GRACE will appear as planned on a co-headlining tour with SHINEDOWN that starts on February 1, with Matt Walst of MY DARKEST DAYS filling in on vocals. The group will announce its future plans after the tour.

The tour is in support of the band's fourth album, "Transit Of Venus", which includes the No. 1 rock radio hit "Chalk Outline".

Gontier played a benefit show in New York City on Thursday night (January 17) and plans to begin work on a solo album in the near future.

Yes, definitely very refreshing coming from a band as mainstream as 3dg. I hate this band a lot but I have a lot of respect for the vocalist for leaving rather than continuing to make regurgitated soulless garbage music.

Never been a fan of the band (for the same reasons that caused their singer to leave), but I have much respect for this Gontier guy. Not easy to give up the big paycheck for the sake of the music.

Maybe now he can use his talents for good...or something.

Ironic he'd claim lack of "heart" as an excuse while up and fucking his ever-loyal bandmates, crew, label, and management who put him where he is today. He should have completed his obligations. Bottom line.

That's what I was thinking. At the very least run out the tour dates with Shinedown.

Props for leaving though and staying true to his heart. But I'm sure there is a little more to the story then that.

Great read. Respect to him for making this decision. The music buisness/road isn't for everyone! Family & health always comes first before anything.

All the best to Adam and hope all goes well.

asshole your fans are what made you rich and famous. if you are not going to make music for them then I hope you have not spent the money you made off of us. I see a reunion in 5 years when he realizes this music from the heart thing does not pay nearly as well as the reason he got in the buisness to begin with. i.e. to be rich and famous! and spare me the artistic nonsense people get in bands to make music people like and to become rich and famous and to get as many girls as possible. the artistic nonsense is spoken by people who could not right a hit song if their life depended on it or they would have!

So you made him rich and famous, why the fuck is he obligated to CONTINUE making music for you, dickhead? Is there a contract? When does it it expire? Truth is you are only owed what you pay for, if you pay for a cd or a concert, that's what you are entitled to. Fucking idiot.

Laggerlugger, you couldn't "right" a hit song, that's for sure... you'd probably end up wronging it.

I have not liked Three Days Grace since I was about 10 (since that is pretty much the maturity level of their music lol). I am really impressed with him for coming out and just saying the truth, and I don't blame him for bailing on the tour. The couple of songs I've heard from the new album are typically shitty rock radio songs with absolutely no passion or "heart". I assume he probably had an epiphany after making the album and realized he couldn't keep up with this boring shit. It sucks for fans that bought tickets that he won't be there, but it sucks more that they have such terrible taste in music.

Stop listening to this shitty, typical, played out garbage and find something that really makes you feel something. Bands like this are good at writing hooks and things that get stuck in your head so people think they are good songs, but they aren't. It's rehashed bullshit. The radio is like McDonalds - it pumps out low quality shit that we think tastes good but is bad and can't even compare to something like a great steak.

Well that's my rant for today. See you all tomorrow.

I'd never heard of this band until one of my guitar students (a 15 year old girl) said she wanted me to learn one of their songs. That day I realised I was already an old geezer :/

I'm with you buddy.

I've heard of them and there music but never thought much about it. Then I hear news of them and Shinedown touring some pretty good size arenas. From what I can tell it looked like 3 days grace is the true healiner(from ads). I'm sure now Shinedown will be. Arena in my area there coming too holds 12K plus. God I just can't see those bands selling 5K in tickets.

I respect him and his decision, but I think once he starts doing solo material and starts playing to 20 people in dive bars across southern ontario he'll go back to Three Days Grace for the cash.

Was never really into Three Days Grace, but they seemed to digress from a decent radio rock band to a shitty butt rock band that's almost on par with Theory of a Deadman and Hinder. Smart move artistically to leave.

I'm sure he liked the music they made at first, but it seems there were alot of disagreements within the band about the direction of the last album.

I didn't mind the first 2 albums, they had a few decent songs. I haven't heard the newest one, but the one before it was pretty garbage so I didn't bother. From what I gathered Adam wrote a lot of the songs? so it might be one of those cases where the solo stuff ends up sounding like 3 days grace while 3 days grace actually change. Kind of like when Max left Sepultura he took Sepultura with him.

I don't know, but at least to me TDGs catalogue is pretty emotional and is tough to see that he isn't writing from his own perspective (never too late anyone?) It was probably that he felt forced to write those types of songs and he couldn't relate to them. I still think it's not fair to the fans, and if theres one side fans should be on its the rest of TDG. Adam should have stayed on the tour, or announce his departure from the band earlier than when he did. I'm a fan and while they may seem very typical Gontier has a great powerful voice and its really gonna hit their fans when the new guy comes in.

I get what you mean, and somewhat agree. At the same time, it also sounds like it's been something he's been struggling with for a while. At least when it comes to the latest album. If he was really not into it and felt forced I can see why he wanted to end it too

I love all the people on here who are basically admitting they no nothing but a few radio hits on here and are judging the band that way.

The good life is NOT depressing. It's what everyone wants including Adam.

The new song sounds like slowed down drosey Muse.

They slayed it live and they shit on theory and those bands
