JACK RUSSELL Says That Station Fire Memorial Foundation Is Refusing To Accept His Donation - Jan. 16, 2013
Jack Russell of the band GREAT WHITE — whose pyrotechnics ignited the deadly blaze on February 20, 2003 at The Station in West Warwick, Rhode Island, killing 100 and injuring hundreds more — last night announced that he was planning to mark the event's ten-year anniversary by donating the proceeds of his acoustic performance on February 7, 2013 at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, California to the Station Fire Memorial Foundation. He has since released the following statement regarding the show:

"This morning my manager received an email from the Vice President of the Station Fire Memorial Foundation, stating that they will refuse any donations from me to the foundation.

"'This is to respect the wishes of the families and survivors who do not wish to have any association with Jack or his GREAT WHITE … We do not want our name associated with ANYTHING Jack Russell or his band does. We do not want any donations or proceeds from anything he does.'

"That being said, the proceeds from the show on February 7 will be donated to a different charitable organization, to be determined shortly.

"I am saddened by the response of the foundation and the motives behind it, but we will put on a great show and make it for a worthy cause."

GREAT WHITE guitarist Ty Longley was one of the people who perished in The Station blaze, which became the fourth deadliest fire in U.S. history.

In 2008, the band agreed to pay $1 million to survivors and families of the victims of the fire. They then launched a multi-year benefit tour for the Station Family Fund.

Fan-filmed video footage of Jack Russell's December 7, 2012 acoustic performance at the Steel Mill Bar and Grille in Martins Ferry, Ohio can be seen below.

Man, this sucks. They have gone out of their way to help the people involved all these years. At the end of the day, they don't owe the rest of their careers to doing this sort of thing forever, but they continue to help anyway.

Wow.

As I said in the article last night, neither Jack nor Great White was responsible. If they were, they'd be the ones in jail and not the band's former manager and the former owners of the club.

Shit, donate it under an assumed name then.

Dude, if you wanna donate cuz you feel it's right it's easy to do, and you don't need your name attached to it.
If you do it to let people know about how generous you are..... Oh well.

The idea of announcing the cause is to encourage more people to come out and SUPPORT IT. Its a bit dickish of you to assume he's doing it to brag how generous he is. For all you know, Jack has made several anonymous donations already, but no one would know because, well they're anonymous.

Why should someone donate money and not receive any recognition for it? It's as much a statement to the families and the fans as it is a monetary contribution.

And yet 2 parties continue to squabble over the name Great White??
One would think that having that fire forever attached to the band name, no one would wanna touch it.. But here we are.

This guy seems to have a lot of problems at the moment but I feel the memorial foundation is making a bad move for the sake of publicity. I understand that a terrible thing happened and loved ones are gone forever and it's hard to let go of that but part of the healing process is to forgive and move on. I hope someday, all involved will be able to do that.

I think it's a great gesture on Jack's part!

This article reads "killing 100 and injuring hundreds more". Yes sadly 100 people were killed, but only 300 were in attendance. "injuring hundreds more" is un-needed exageration and shows the author is either careless and sloppy in his reporting or is purposely overstating the facts to enhance the impact of his story. Either is un-excusable when reporting on such a tragedy. Yes I realize that this is just an obscure metal crap sheet but still you should try to get the facts right.

to say? With the 10th anniversary just about upon us, the raw emotions are going to be exposed once again. After reading the basics once again,I think they got it right as far as culpability. You can go back and forth on this till your blue in the face. The matierials should not have never been installed. There should have been more communication between the band and the venue. And lastly the band's tour manager should have listened to the pyro guy (who was fired hours before the performance) that the pyro was too dangerous to light off in the building. But he did it anyway. He'll have nightmares forever.

Unless you are involved in the Station Fire Fund, NOT ONE OF YOU should be able to voice any opinion. Saying they are wrong for not wanting his money is their decision. Jack didn't do much if anything for ten years & all of a sudden wants recognition for a donation right around the 10 year anny. The money they got from the fire is clearly deserved & if anyone bothered to read about the events you would know this didn't come out of Jack's pocket it came from insurance money. This is a man that right after the fire, got plastic surgery donated to himself instead of a fire victim. You should all be ashamed of yourselves including Blabbermouth. You had your chance to make a right & that should of happened 10 years ago.

Getting the facts straight needs help too. there were 465+ people there, 100 died, 65 children lost one or both parents and over 200 were gravely injured. THOSE are the accurate facts.

When that Station Nightclub tragedy happened, I hated Great White as well, and even felt ashamed to be a musician myself.

After doing some research, I realized that the club was Line with Polyethylene foam that is HIGHLY COMBUSTIBLE. That shit went up almost instantly. Yeah it was stupid to light pyrotechnics inside such a small space, but you have to admit, there are several others to blame including the club owner and the local fire inspectors that did not catch this. Several people were negligent. You can't just single out Jack and Great White.

I'm sure they have their reasons for not wanting his money, I would just be classy about it and move on without issuing a press release. No point in being bitter about it. One could always advertise as planned then donate anonymously as someone already mentioned. Jeez. It's not about him.....

Holy shit, I guess it was the fourth deadliest fire in U.S. history. Just found it hard to believe that some nightclub was near the top of the list since I heard so many stories about HUGE fires wiping out whole towns such as the Great Chicago Fire or the Peshito Fire in Wisconsin which happened on the same day (crazy shit!)...

I almost went to that show and knew a few who did. All survived but a couple were burned pretty bad. Great White was partially responsible but the owner's of the club were more at fault. One reason why I do not respect Great White is that they said they would do a tour and donate the money to the fund. As far as I know, they played one show. Big deal. They have donated nothing in 10 years (has it really been 10 yrs?!) That is pathetic!! The guilt of that night and aftermath is all over Jack's face and his self abusing over the past 10 years. Sad story all the way around.

Being a professional Pyro technician in CT at the time of the fire I can assure you that the BAND was totally responsible for that fire... for the simple fact that they broke numerous laws by even having, transporting, and using pyro in that club at all... how they personally avoided jail time is unimaginable ... the company that made the foam paid more than the band members who being seasoned professionals knew that they were breaking many laws that night... no they certainly didn't imagine what would happen that night but having played that room before no responsible professional would ever dream of using pyro there. Jack is lucky to not be in jail for mass murder.
