ANTHRAX Taps SHADOWS FALL Guitarist For Upcoming Tour - Jan. 11, 2013
ANTHRAX has tapped SHADOWS FALL's Jon Donais (pictured below) to play second guitar on all currently scheduled tour dates following last week's departure of Rob Caggiano. Donais will temporarily fill in for ANTHRAX's upcoming shows in India, the series of Soundwave festival dates in Australia, and the North American Metal Alliance Tour.

"Jon is a bro and he's also a total fucking ripper," said Scott Ian. "I've worked with him twice before on side projects and he tears it up. I'm excited to have him on my right burning up the stage with ANTHRAX. 13's gonna be a good year."

"I grew up on ANTHRAX, they're the thrash scene, they're one of the 'Big Four,' I'd be crazy to not want to play with them," said Donais. "Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I'd be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place. Rob and I are using Skype to work on solos and other guitar parts, so he's being great. I also have to give special thanks to my band — Brian, Matt, Jason and Ed — who have been incredibly supportive and encouraged me to do this."

Caggiano announced his departure from ANTHRAX on January 4 to focus on his other passion: producing records. The remaining members of ANTHRAX said in a statement: "Rob has been an integral part of ANTHRAX for so many years, as our lead guitarist, in a production capacity, but most of all, as our close friend. His contributions to the band have been enormous. While we are sad that he is leaving, we wish him nothing but great success going forward, and hope to share the stage with him again sometime down the road."

Caggiano — whose two stints with ANTHRAX ran from 2001-2005 and 2007 to now — stated about his decision to leave the band: "We accomplished so many great things together over the years and I shared some of the best times of my life with these guys. As a band, we also weathered quite a few storms along the way. It's been a wild ride (to say the least) from Day One and I wouldn't change one single thing about the last 12 years."

Caggiano added that, "This is an extremely difficult and emotional decision for me to make, but my heart is just steering me in a different direction right now. I've always been one to follow my heart in everything that I do and while this might be one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, it feels like the right one for me at this time. Scott [Ian, guitar], Charlie [Benante, drums], Joey [Belladonna, vocals], Frankie [Bello, bass] (and [former ANTHRAX singer] John Bush) will always be part of my family and this decision doesn't change the way I feel about that in the slightest. I would also like to say thanks to all the amazing fans I've met and hung out with worldwide over the years. You guys always were and always will be the reason why I make music!"

I was hoping they'd get Dan Spitz back in the band. Well, at least that guy from Shadows Fall is only joining Anthrax for their upcoming tour.

... a perfectly capable guitarist for the tour dates, but obviously he isn't leaving Shadows Fall. They need to think about a permanent member.

The guy is a good enough guitarist that I am sure he will play the songs well enough. I'm actually surprised Dan Spitz will not be involved - his addition would have been a major selling point for the tour.

Man, there are so many idiots on this site.

Jon Donais is not a new member of Anthrax. He's only filling in for their scheduled tour dates.

I'm sure once they finish the tour, they'll figure out who they want to join the band permanently.

As for Dan Spitz, I would love to see him return permanently. But, that's not going to happen. Dan has stated numerous times he doesn't want to be on tour anymore. He wants to take care of his kids plus he's had heart problems over the past few years

Maybe they can get Dan to rejoin the band to just write and record the next CD, then get someone to fill when they tour.

they should definately get dan spitz to write and record the next studio album, his style of playing is a huge part of the Anthrax classic sound. During the rockstar mayhem festival last summer the showdow's fall drummer actually flubbed the drum rolls in Indians and I am the Law. You could tell he most likely didnt have time to practive the set well enough for the tour.

Dan never wrote much for Anthrax. It's pretty much been the Scott and Charlie show since Spreading the Disease.

Well, perhaps the guys hoped he would be the least likely replacement to lay a cable on Frankie's back. Looking forward to hearing him play live with them.

I think it's pretty obvious that Dan Spitz isn't coming back. They're playing all of "Among The Living" on this tour. I'm sure that, in terms of learning the material, it would have been easier to bring Dan in than someone entirely new if that was the only issue. As noted, Dan's got 2 kids with autism to take care of, plus his watch business which is actually a pretty big deal. Music and touring are not his #1 priorities anymore.

Some people here must learn how to read. The guy fills in for remaining tour dates and they will then announced who their new lead guitarist will be once they're back home. They need some time to try out the new guy and tie the usual business knots before announcing anything, I guess.

...yes Dan Spitz' leads were great, he was one of the originals, but his absence is hardly cause for everyone being up-in-arms.

I saw them back in the 90's w/ Paul Crook and their sound hardly suffered.

Maybe Scott and Charlie are prima-donnas...WHO CARES?? As long as they're out there bringing the metal.

It's 4/5 of the original band - these days that's pretty damn good. What more do you idiots want???

Meanwhile, I don't hear anyone b*tching about Exodus and they have 2/5 members from the first album!

Spitz is just not good enough anymore to play in this band. I'm one of the few who think he's done great with Red Lamb, but Caggiano is a much more inventive guitar player. His leads have been the best this band has ever had on its songs, always interesting and with a lot of musicality. With all due respect to him, Spitz could just not play them, let alone create leads that would be as much inventive.
