Former METALLICA Producer FLEMMING RASMUSSEN Talks About His Work On Classic Metal Albums - Jan. 10, 2013
On December 10, 2012, Jason Saulnier of the MusicLegends.ca web site conducted an interview with Danish producer Flemming Rasmussen (METALLICA, RAINBOW, BLIND GUARDIAN, MORBID ANGEL, EVILE). You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

In a 2011 interview with Ultimate-Guitar.com, Rasmussen stated about how he initially became involved with METALLICA: "I worked on an album with Ritchie Blackmore's RAINBOW, 'Difficult To Cure'. METALLICA had their first record out, 'Kill 'Em All'. They wanted to try out something different and record in Europe. The dollar at that time was so strong that they thought they could spend more time in a studio based in Europe than they could do in the U.S. They decided to call me up, to ask if I was interested. I did not know them at all; I did not know who they were at that time."

Asked about the early studio sessions with METALLICA, Rasmussen said: "In our studio sessions, we worked pretty hard, at the same time having some really magical and inspiring moment. For example, songs like 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' were fully composed at the Sweet Silence Studio. 'Master Of Puppets' was totally composed when they came into the studio. They used to produce really good demos before going into the recording sessions. I really appreciated that. Their first idea was to start in the States looking for a pro studio, but then they decided to continue at Sweet Silence again. On that record everything flowed easily. 'Master' took about four months to be finished, 'Ride The Lightning' two months. For '…And Justice For All' we recorded four months in a row, with no days off! Its production was a bit more hard as compared to the others. Cliff Burton [METALLICA bassist] had already died, and the situation was a bit strange at that time."

Master was a very good record and production was almost pristine at the time. I still prefer that older sound over the polished cut and paste crap they put out today. Cool little write up

He worked on RTL, MoP and AJFA and then no more. Maybe that's the missing ingredient. Get him back!

Rasmussen had nothing to do with the quality of the musical direction. The shit that shitallica has put out in the last 20 years is solely on the four writers of the music. I mean hell if that were the case Rick ruben produced reign in blood (to me) hands down one of the best thrash albums of all time, yet Rubin produce shit magnetic.

I like his productions a lot. Imaginations from the Other Side is a great, heavy, aggressive power metal album and the production contributes to it.

Don't get me wrong, he seems like a good producer, but in the 80's Metallica could've worked with anyone and the end result would've still been great. I think he benefited more from Metallica than Metallica did from him.

You are right in a way but wrong in another. Bob Rock pushed them in to simplifying their riffs and making there sound more accessible. On the flip side of that, they went with Bob Rock to, in their own words, take them to the next level. So while he may not have been responsible for their music in a sense he was responsible for their more progressive sound.

That is a good point. Also I guess another thing to kind of go off what you just stated. Some producers will make or break the intent of what an artist or band set forth on creating. In the world of heavy music for example a lot of bands (especially now a days) get "over produced". And as most know waters down the raw quality of what a band originally had on mind.

Rasmussen says that the best recording equipment/studios are here in NYC, but I can't afford them.

Pro Tools is the stuff, but I don't know how to use it

Records sound best, but I can't download them into my iPod

I'm tired of people blaming Bob Rock for "ruining" Metallica.

Metallica reached out to Rock and wanted him to take them to the next level commercially.

Bob Rock is a pop rock/metal producer who did for them EXACTLY what they wanted, and made the Black Album one of the biggest, and biggest-sounding, albums in the history of music.

You may not like what influence he had on Metallica, but blame the band for hooking up with him. They were grown adults and knew exactly what they were getting in a producer.

Back in the 80's, Cliff probably had the most eclectic taste out of all 4 of them. For all we know, he would've liked their 90's direction.

METALLICA needs to get out of their comfort zone in California.

All of their best music was recorded in Europe or Vancouver. They've exclusively worked in their home base of California since the Load sessions in '95-'96.

Many bands can stay home and record and put out some great music like Testament and Machine Head, who both record they're albums in studios around Oakland, CA. Metallica cannot do that, they need to get away from California for awhile.

It's time to get away from the comforts of home.

Forget about Bob Rock or Rick Rubin. They need to have Flemming Rasmussen or Andy Sneap or some other 'Metal' producer produce the next CD. Go over to Europe and write and record the next CD.

Back when they were making the classic albums. The band was their sole priority. That's why the songs came out so great. That hasn't been the case for twenty years.

I understand they now have wives and kids.
But, they're also distracted by other interests like collecting cars, expensive art, buying real estate, etc....

They need to forget about all of that other stuff for 2-4 months, go to Europe and write and record 10-12 songs like they used to do.

Then when it's done, they could worry about all of the art and cars and real estate or whatever else they like besides music.

Metallica has been dead and buried for the last 20 years. 'Death Magnetic' has been the closest thing as a historical come back for the band as it comes. If it gets any better than that, I'll be shocked.

the greatest metal producers there is. Rick Rubin isn't good anymore, he was cool back then when he was hanging with the Cult and Slayer & did those Johnny Cash records. But now he's just a joke, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Green Day, with some good releases like Adele, Shakira, AC/DC. But after Death Magnetic, I question how good the new Sabbath or Metallica will sound. The 'Tallica should bring Flemming back and take back their place on the thrash throne.

The production on Master and Ride is far superior to all these modern mainstream bands like Avenged and Trivium with their ultra compressed/produced sound - sounds way to digitised and totally looses that organic sound/feel.

..is exactly right. They definitely sought out Bob Rock and had planned to change their direction before they met him.

Back in day they had just come of their first huge headlining arena tour with Justice and talked about a new direction in the metal press. They said something like "we'd look out in the audience and see that the kids were tired because the songs were too long". Also said they had definitely decided to shorten.

I don't remember anyone being tired of the long songs on that tour but they said this many times in interviews. There was definitely a band decision to do something different. Bob Rock was a hired gun, at least at that time.

Hurrr Mastur of Papputs best album eva.

They won't do a real thrash album ever again. Deal with it and stop listening to MOP for the 26th year dreaming of the past, instead just follow and support other bands that still deliver. Seriously 80s Metallica nostalgia is a thing for 14-year olds and weekend metalheads that know five bands, just open your ears to more music and you won't feel that anymore.

How could Rassmussen produce such great sounding albums like Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning, then remove the bass guitar from And Justice For All and just make the guitars low end heavy?

This has got to be a thorn in Rasmussen's side to this day.

Get your facts straight. He had nothing to do with this. Blame Hetfield and Ulrich instead.... They started recording with GnR's producer, then kicked him out to call Flemming back, but then he left too, before the mix was finalised. It was 100% the band leaders' decision.
