LARS ULRICH Says New METALLICA Material 'Sounds Like A Continuation' Of 'Death Magnetic' - Jan. 8, 2013
METALLICA last year tapped award-winning director Nimród Antal to helm the band's 3D movie. Charlotte Huggins ("Journey To The Center Of The Earth", "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island") is producing the film, which will be a marriage of narrative and concert and will star the "five" members of METALLICAJames Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo, and the fans. It will be released in the summer.

"There are similarities [to LED ZEPPELIN's 1976 film 'The Song Remains The Same', a companion to the live album of the same name]," Ulrich reveals in the latest issue of Classic Rock magazine. "There are four members in LED ZEPPELIN, four members in METALLICA, it's a full-length movie, and there's a lot in this film that does not take place onstage. The major difference is that the stuff that takes place offstage in the METALLICA movie does not feature any members of METALLICA. It's two separate worlds — a METALLICA show and a story that unfolds in a parallel universe — and at some point they intertwine."

METALLICA recently commenced work on material for the follow-up to 2008's "Death Magnetic" for a tentative 2014 release. The new songs are said to pick up where the last album left off.

"'Death Magnetic' is one motherfucker of a record," Ulrich told Classic Rock. "There aren't many METALLICA records that sound as good as 'Death Magnetic' four years after they were made. With a lot of the other records, there were questions: 'Why did we do that?' or 'What was going on there?' or 'Why didn't somebody say to turn the snare on?' I don't feel like that with 'Death Magnetic'. What we're doing now certainly sounds like a continuation."

However, Lars would not confirm that METALICA's next album will once again be helmed by producer Rick Rubin, who worked on "Death Magnetic", telling Classic Rock: "I love Rick. We all love Rick. We're in touch with Rick constantly. We'll see where it goes."

He added: "It would stun me if the record came out in 2013. We've got to finish this 3D movie, which is what we're doing right now."

Normally it only takes 10 minutes after a Metallica posting to bring at least 100+ haters.

Personally I'm glad they are continuing with the Death Magnetic sound. Sure another ..And Justice for All(with some bass this time) would be awesome but I liked Death Magnetic(except for that last song). I even grew to like the over compressed sound and I have uncompressed versions of the songs.

No Ron McGovney No Metallica!

but at least he still has a sense of humor. taking jabs at himself there. I for one was happy with Death Magnetic, and feel thats about as close to classic metallica as we are going to get from guys in their 50s. I welcome a continuation of that writing style, but they MUST get a new producer. I just want it to have the audio quality of the "Load" era albums.

No, it's not true. Metallica, just like Pink Floyd and any other " greats" are for everyone. Just because I wasn't born when animals came out doesn't mean I don't get it and never will, that's just a fucking ridiculous thing to say. I swear the people on here are getting dumber and drumber. I remember an interview with mike bordin I think, he was asked what was the difference between the audience before and the audience after faith no more had a hit, his answer was simple, "they're much dumber". It sure looks like blabbermouth got too popular. Dumbasses.

No. It's uninspired garbage. The timing is off, the solos are horrific and every song is almost immediately forgettable. I tried listening to it several times back when it came out and each time it just disappointed. Metallica put out a few really great albums but that was more than 20 years ago and they have been putting out sub-standard trash since. Death Magnetic was them trying to show they're still heavy when all it ended up as was noise. In this day and age, there is no excuse for shitty production. Kids at home using their laptops have better sound quality than the last 2 Metallica albums.

Puppets and the Black album were classics to the level that if you don't liket like them you don't like rock. Ride and Justice rank among the best metal records of all time. Kill is one of the all time best debuts and defined thrash. For their flaws, dm and the loads were damn good records, better than a lot of big time heavy rock. That leaves us with only one shit record. Now look at the other legendary US bands. Van Halen gave us Diver down, ou812, balance, three and that new crap. Kiss hasn't put out anythingely listenable since 83, with the exception of Carnival of Souls, andat wwaway thanks to them putting the makeup back on. Wordsmith has sucked since the seventies.

I like Metallica, even now. But in terms of production, I wish they had better taste. They should have got Andy Sneap to produce the album, and they should wait until the performances are right.

Death Magnetic was an OK album for a fan to listen to, but some of the songs are awesome. If Testament or Exodus covered those songs and Andy Sneap produced it, it'd be a pretty damn good album.

Its kind of like Metallica like sounding loose too much and I think the albums suffer as a consequence. They can still write cool bits rather well, but they can't do finished products so well.

They're done. They've been at the top for a long time and as a result, have no drive or creativity left. They're not hungry for it anymore. They're just some old dudes keeping their income steady by playing covers of their old band.

Anyone can see the progression over the years. The music just gets more mellow, more generic and more meaningless as time goes on. Metallica divorced thrash with the black album. We're not going to see it again.

It's great if they keep the Thrash level of Death Magnetic. Riff-wise, at times it really was a return to form. But pleeeaaase start to really WRITE songs again, not just throw together a bunch of riffs. Make songs with a structure, songs that build up energy and bring up the right riff where it should come, and so on. Songs with progression, with a soul.

I wrote Metallica off a long time ago, but I have to admit, Death Magnetic was ok. What I can't understand though is how a band that spends as much as Metallica does on recording get such horrible sound on the final product? St. Anger and DM had a terribly inferior sound. How could Bob Rock and Rick Rubin let that go to print? They are both highly experienced producers (though Rubin doesn't actually produce, he's more of a rock therapist who has his underlings actually go to the studios. Danzig once called him the best producer he's never worked with and asked, unsuccessfully, to have his name removed from Danzig 4 as producer since Glenn did the actual studio work and is listed on it as only co-producer). If they are continuing along the same lines as DM, it will be a solid album. I just hope they don't go back to the more experimental weaker sounds of Load, Reload and St. Anger. They need a solid metal album after Lulu.

For all their chest-beating about how many riffs Hetfield has, it sure takes them a ridiculously long time to whip up 10 songs, jeez. I just wonder if their hearts are really in it still, or if they feel obligated to keep putting out records, albeit at a snail's pace.

Then I'll pass, thanks. Death Magnetic should've been called "The Album that Could Have Been", because it's full of good ideas, but the TERRIBLE production, almost inaudible bass, fizzy guitar tone, sloppy playing by Kirk, and overly (and unnecessarily) long songs just make it a pretty crappy album in my opinion.

For f*ck's sake, even the EP they released with the "raw" leftover songs (Beyond Magnetic) was HEAPS better than the album in every possible way!

Anybody that says the Black Album sucks is a dumbass, thrash purist that likely doesn't listen to much else. It might not be THrash but it's definately quality material, among the best they've done. New album will likely kick ass, same as DM. Likely won't be as good as any 80's material, since they released Lulu after all. They need to do something pretty damn good to redeem themselves this time.

Metallica doesn't care about their fans, otherwise they'd get Flemming back.

I remember they had said it was gonna be like the Black Album (short songs), now they contradict themselves

They've had way too many chances to redeem themselves since 1988... THEY HAVE FAILED.
